This article is an approach to Olors (‘smells’) (2000), a theater work by Josep M. Benet i Jornet, with the objective of analyzing the text from the scope of the function of fictional space in his writing and in his theatrical discourse: an analysis of the construction of the spatiality, taking into account the different levels of space action (macrospace, microspace, stage’s space and latent space) and how these aspects are present in the text. It also examines the relationship between fiction and reality with respect to the image of Barcelona presented in the work, and the author’s reflections on the close links between the urban identity of the inhabitants of a neighborhood undergoing transformation / destruction, based on individual, family and social memory

Calcium-Sensing Receptor Regulates Cytosolic [Ca 2+ ] and Plays a Major Role in the Development of Pulmonary Hypertension.

    Get PDF
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive disease characterized by elevated pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) leading to right heart failure and premature death. The increased PVR results in part from pulmonary vascular remodeling and sustained pulmonary vasoconstriction. Excessive pulmonary vascular remodeling stems from increased pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cell (PASMC) proliferation and decreased PASMC apoptosis. A rise in cytosolic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]cyt) in PASMC is a major trigger for pulmonary vasoconstriction and a key stimulus for PASMC proliferation and migration, both contributing to the development of pulmonary vascular remodeling. PASMC from patients with idiopathic PAH (IPAH) have increased resting [Ca2+]cyt and enhanced Ca2+ influx. Enhanced Ca2+ entry into PASMC due to upregulation of membrane receptors and/or Ca2+ channels may contribute to PASMC contraction and proliferation and to pulmonary vasoconstriction and pulmonary vascular remodeling. We have shown that the extracellular Ca2+-sensing receptor (CaSR), which is a member of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) subfamily C, is upregulated, and the extracellular Ca2+-induced increase in [Ca2+]cyt is enhanced in PASMC from patients with IPAH in comparison to PASMC from normal subjects. Pharmacologically blockade of CaSR significantly attenuate the development and progression of experimental pulmonary hypertension in animals. Additionally, we have demonstrated that dihydropyridine Ca2+ channel blockers (e.g., nifedipine), which are used to treat PAH patients but are only effective in 15-20% of patients, activate CaSR resulting in an increase in [Ca2+]cyt in IPAH-PASMC, but not normal PASMC. Our data indicate that CaSR functionally couples with transient receptor potential canonical (TRPC) channels to mediate extracellular Ca2+-induced Ca2+ influx and increase in [Ca2+]cyt in IPAH-PASMC. Upregulated CaSR is necessary for the enhanced extracellular Ca2+-induced increase in [Ca2+]cyt and the augmented proliferation of PASMC in patients with IPAH. This review will highlight the pathogenic role of CaSR in the development and progression of PAH

Evidence of coupling between the thermal and nonthermal emission in the gamma-ray binary LS I +61 303

The gamma-ray binary LS I +61 303 is composed of a Be star and a compact companion orbiting in an eccentric orbit. Variable flux modulated with the orbital period of ~26.5 d has been detected from radio to very high-energy gamma rays. In addition, the system presents a superorbital variability of the phase and amplitude of the radio outburst with a period of ~4.6 yr. We present optical photometric observations of LS I +61 303 spanning ~1.5 yr and contemporaneous Halpha equivalent width (EW Halpha) data. The optical photometry shows, for the first time, that the known orbital modulation suffers a positive orbital phase shift and an increase in flux for data obtained 1-yr apart. This behavior is similar to that already known at radio wavelengths, indicating that the optical flux follows the superorbital variability as well. The orbital modulation of the EW Halpha presents the already known superorbital flux variability but shows, also for the first time, a positive orbital phase shift. In addition, the optical photometry exhibits a lag of ~0.1-0.2 in orbital phase with respect to the EW Halpha measurements at similar superorbital phases, and presents a lag of ~0.1 and ~0.3 orbital phases with respect noncontemperaneous radio and X-ray outbursts, respectively. The phase shifts detected in the orbital modulation of thermal indicators, such as the optical flux and the EW Halpha, are in line with the observed behavior for nonthermal indicators, such as X-ray or radio emission. This shows that there is a strong coupling between the thermal and nonthermal emission processes in the gamma-ray binary LS I +61 303. The orbital phase lag between the optical flux and the EW Halpha is naturally explained considering different emitting regions in the circumstellar disk, whereas the secular evolution might be caused by the presence of a moving one-armed spiral density wave in the disk.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in A&A (this version matches the published version

“Patch”ing Up Our Tumor Signaling Knowledge

    Get PDF
The tumor suppressor Patched1 (Ptch1) possesses well-described roles in regulating sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling in the skin and preventing the formation of basal cell carcinomas (BCCs). In this issue, Kang et al. extend their previous work to show that a naturally occurring allele of Ptch1 found in FVB mice promotes early squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) growth without aberrant activation of the SHH pathway. The study reveals new roles for Ptch1 that lie at the nexus between BCC and SCC formation

Els directors d'escena valencians en temps de democràcia

Summary: This article focuses on the figure of the theatre director in València from the beginning of the democratic era up to the first years of the twenty-first century. This is an aspect of theatre which has so far been little studied. To begin with, we give an overview of this figure, taking into account on the one hand the type of theatrical institution involved (public or private), and on the other, the type of theatre (text-based, indoor...) in which directors have usually worked. We then offer a more detailed picture of the most outstanding director of this period in València, Carles Alfaro (born in València in 1960), who did important work at the head of the Moma Teatre company (1982–2004). Más allá de la interpretación: nuevas creadoras en el teatro valenciano actual

The article focuses on the presence of women in the Valencian theatre of recent years in fields other than acting, where they have traditionally been active. We observe that women have progressively gained space here both in creative fields (as directors, writers and designers) and at management level (in the public sector or in individual theatre companies and production and design firms). Thus, we aim to examine how women have gradually increased their participation in the world of professional theatre by taking on new creative roles, whether by combining these with acting roles or by moving on to other areas. Some current examples of this phenomenon are highlighted: Eva Zapico, Patrícia Pardo, Pau Pons, and Maribel Bayona.

Summary: This article focuses on Valencian playwrights of the 21st century, specifically authors who appeared at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, and who normally write plays for adults in the Catalan language. For this purpose, some typical characteristics of the Valencian theatrical context will be taken into account, such as the increasingly prominent presence of women playwrights, the creation of playwrights by their own companies, and the role of public theatre in the support and promotion of young writers. In addition, the work of Patrícia Pardo (b. Alaquàs, 1975), Juli Disla (b. Aldaia, 1976), and Xavier Puchades (b. València, 1973), as well as El pont flotant company (founded in València, 2000), four creative forces who have consolidated their careers during the second decade of this century, will be presented individually.
