High Energy Bounds on Soft N=4 SYM Amplitudes from AdS/CFT
Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the high-energy behavior of
colorless dipole elastic scattering amplitudes in N=4 SYM gauge theory through
the Wilson loop correlator formalism and Euclidean to Minkowskian analytic
continuation. The purely elastic behavior obtained at large impact-parameter L,
through duality from disconnected AdS_5 minimal surfaces beyond the
Gross-Ooguri transition point, is combined with unitarity and analyticity
constraints in the central region. In this way we obtain an absolute bound on
the high-energy behavior of the forward scattering amplitude due to the
graviton interaction between minimal surfaces in the bulk. The dominant
"Pomeron" intercept is bounded by alpha less than or equal to 11/7 using the
AdS/CFT constraint of a weak gravitational field in the bulk. Assuming the
elastic eikonal approximation in a larger impact-parameter range gives alpha
between 4/3 and 11/7. The actual intercept becomes 4/3 if one assumes the
elastic eikonal approximation within its maximally allowed range L larger than
exp{Y/3}, where Y is the total rapidity. Subleading AdS/CFT contributions at
large impact-parameter due to the other d=10 supergravity fields are obtained.
A divergence in the real part of the tachyonic KK scalar is cured by
analyticity but signals the need for a theoretical completion of the AdS/CFT
scheme.Comment: 25 pages, 3 eps figure
Wilson-loop formalism for Reggeon exchange in soft high-energy scattering
We derive a nonperturbative expression for the non-vacuum,
qqbar-Reggeon-exchange contribution to the meson-meson elastic scattering
amplitude at high energy and low momentum transfer, in the framework of QCD.
Describing the mesons in terms of colourless qqbar dipoles, the problem is
reduced to the two-fermion-exchange contribution to the dipole-dipole
scattering amplitudes, which is expressed as a path integral, over the
trajectories of the exchanged fermions, of the expectation value of a certain
Wilson loop. We also show how the resulting expression can be reconstructed
from a corresponding quantity in the Euclidean theory, by means of analytic
continuation. Finally, we make contact with previous work on Reggeon exchange
in the gauge/gravity duality approach.Comment: A few misprints in the expressions for the relevant Wilson loops have

Modelling mould growth in domestic environments using relative humidity and temperature
This is the final version. Available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.âŻDamp and high levels of relative humidity (RH), typically above 70â80%, are known to provide mould-favourable conditions. Exposure to indoor mould contamination has been associated with an increased risk of developing and/or exacerbating a range of allergic and non-allergic diseases. The VTT model is a mathematical model of indoor mould growth that was developed based on surface readings of RH and temperature on wood in a controlled laboratory chamber. The model provides a mould index based on the environmental readings. We test the generalisability of this laboratory-based model to less-controlled domestic environments across different values of model parameters. Mould indices were generated using objective measurements of RH and temperature in the air, taken from sensors in a domestic setting every 3â5 min over 1 year in the living room and bedroom across 219 homes. Mould indices were assessed against self-reports from occupants regarding the presence of visible mould growth and mouldy odour in the home. Logistic regression provided evidence for relationships between mould indices and occupant responses. Mould indices were most successful at predicting occupant responses when the model parameters encouraged higher vulnerability to mould growth compared with the original VTT model. A lower critical RH level, above which mould grows, a higher sensitivity, and larger increases in the mould index all consistently increased performance. Using moment-to-moment time-series data for temperature and RH, the model and its developments could help inform smart monitoring or control of RH, for example to counter risks associated with reduced ventilation in energy efficient homes.European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)European Regional Development Fund (ERDF
Emergent Properties of Tumor Microenvironment in a Real-life Model of Multicell Tumor Spheroids
Multicellular tumor spheroids are an important {\it in vitro} model of the
pre-vascular phase of solid tumors, for sizes well below the diagnostic limit:
therefore a biophysical model of spheroids has the ability to shed light on the
internal workings and organization of tumors at a critical phase of their
development. To this end, we have developed a computer program that integrates
the behavior of individual cells and their interactions with other cells and
the surrounding environment. It is based on a quantitative description of
metabolism, growth, proliferation and death of single tumor cells, and on
equations that model biochemical and mechanical cell-cell and cell-environment
interactions. The program reproduces existing experimental data on spheroids,
and yields unique views of their microenvironment. Simulations show complex
internal flows and motions of nutrients, metabolites and cells, that are
otherwise unobservable with current experimental techniques, and give novel
clues on tumor development and strong hints for future therapies.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures. Accepted for publication in PLOS One. The

The Regge Limit for Green Functions in Conformal Field Theory
We define a Regge limit for off-shell Green functions in quantum field
theory, and study it in the particular case of conformal field theories (CFT).
Our limit differs from that defined in arXiv:0801.3002, the latter being only a
particular corner of the Regge regime. By studying the limit for free CFTs, we
are able to reproduce the Low-Nussinov, BFKL approach to the pomeron at weak
coupling. The dominance of Feynman graphs where only two high momentum lines
are exchanged in the t-channel, follows simply from the free field analysis. We
can then define the BFKL kernel in terms of the two point function of a simple
light-like bilocal operator. We also include a brief discussion of the gravity
dual predictions for the Regge limit at strong coupling.Comment: 23 pages 2 figures, v2: Clarification of relation of the Regge limit

Reggeon exchange from gauge/gravity duality
We perform the analysis of quark-antiquark Reggeon exchange in meson-meson
scattering, in the framework of the gauge/gravity correspondence in a confining
background. On the gauge theory side, Reggeon exchange is described as
quark-antiquark exchange in the t channel between fast projectiles. The
corresponding amplitude is represented in terms of Wilson loops running along
the trajectories of the constituent quarks and antiquarks. The paths of the
exchanged fermions are integrated over, while the "spectator" fermions are
dealt with in an eikonal approximation. On the gravity side, we follow a
previously proposed approach, and we evaluate the Wilson-loop expectation value
by making use of gauge/gravity duality for a generic confining gauge theory.
The amplitude is obtained in a saddle-point approximation through the
determination near the confining horizon of a Euclidean "minimal surface with
floating boundaries", i.e., by fixing the trajectories of the exchanged quark
and antiquark by means of a minimisation procedure, which involves both area
and length terms. After discussing, as a warm-up exercise, a simpler problem on
a plane involving a soap film with floating boundaries, we solve the
variational problem relevant to Reggeon exchange, in which the basic geometry
is that of a helicoid. A compact expression for the Reggeon-exchange amplitude,
including the effects of a small fermion mass, is then obtained through
analytic continuation from Euclidean to Minkowski space-time. We find in
particular a linear Regge trajectory, corresponding to a Regge-pole singularity
supplemented by a logarithmic cut induced by the non-zero quark mass. The
analytic continuation leads also to companion contributions, corresponding to
the convolution of the same Reggeon-exchange amplitude with multiple elastic
rescattering interactions between the colliding mesons.Comment: 60+1 pages, 14 figure
Nonperturbative contributions to the quark form factor at high energy
The analysis of nonperturbative effects in high energy asymptotics of the
electomagnetic quark form factor is presented. It is shown that the
nonperturbative effects determine the initial value for the perturbative
evolution of the quark form factor and find their general structure with
respect to the high energy asymptotics. Within the Wilson integral formalism
which is natural for investigation of the soft, IR sensitive, part of the
factorized form factor, the structure of the instanton induced effects in the
evolution equation is discussed. It is demonstrated that the instanton
contributions result in the finite renormalization of the subleading
perturbative result and numerically are characterized by small factor
reflecting the diluteness of the QCD vacuum within the instanton liquid model.
The relevance of the IR renormalon induced effects in high energy asymptotic
behaviour is discussed. The consequences of the various analytization
procedures of the strong coupling constant in the IR domain are considered.Comment: REVTeX, 12 pages, 1 figure. Important references and discussions

The impact of hyperhidrosis on patients' daily life and quality of life : A qualitative investigation
Background: An understanding of the daily life impacts of hyperhidrosis and how patients deal with them, based on qualitative research, is lacking. This study investigated the impact of hyperhidrosis on the daily life of patients using a mix of qualitative research methods. Methods: Participants were recruited through hyperhidrosis patient support groups such as the Hyperhidrosis Support Group UK. Data were collected using focus groups, interviews and online surveys. A grounded theory approach was used in the analysis of data transcripts. Data were collected from 71 participants, out of an initial 100 individuals recruited. Results: Seventeen major themes capturing the impacts of hyperhidrosis were identified; these covered all areas of life including daily life, psychological well-being, social life, professional /school life, dealing with hyperhidrosis, unmet health care needs and physical impact. Conclusions: Psychosocial impacts are central to the overall impacts of hyperhidrosis, cutting across and underlying the limitations experienced in other areas of life.Peer reviewe
Non-abelian T-duality, Ramond Fields and Coset Geometries
We extend previous work on non-abelian T-duality in the presence of Ramond
fluxes to cases in which the duality group acts with isotropy such as in
backgrounds containing coset spaces. In the process we generate new
supergravity solutions related to D-brane configurations and to standard
supergravity compactifications.Comment: 35 pages, Late
