Generation of attosecond electron bunches in a laser-plasma accelerator using a plasma density upramp
Attosecond electron bunches and attosecond radiation pulses enable the study of ultrafast dynamics of matter in an unprecedented regime. In this paper, the suitability for the experimental realization of a novel scheme producing sub-femtosecond duration electron bunches from laser-wakefield acceleration in plasma with self-injection in a plasma upramp profile has been investigated. While it has previously been predicted that this requires laser power above a few hundred terawatts typically, here we show that the scheme can be extended with reduced driving laser powers down to tens of terawatts, generating accelerated electron pulses with minimum length of around 166. attoseconds and picocoulombs charge. Using particle-in-cell simulations and theoretical models, the evolution of the accelerated electron bunch within the plasma as well as simple scalings of the bunch properties with initial laser and plasma parameters are presented
Proposed Beam Test of a Transverse Gradient Undulator at the SINBAD Facility at DESY
While Laser Plasma Accelerators produce beams with the high output energy required for FELs, up to now the relatively high energy spread has prohibited FEL lasing. Therefore it was proposed to replace the normal FEL undulators by Transverse Gradient Undulators (TGUs). For a first, small scale test of the TGU concept, a 40 period prototype high gradient superconductive TGU was built at KIT and will be tested with beam at the ARES-linac in the new accelerator test facility SINBAD (Short Innovative Bunches and Accelerators at Desy) at DESY. The proposed tests are summarized in this paper
The UA9 experimental layout
The UA9 experimental equipment was installed in the CERN-SPS in March '09
with the aim of investigating crystal assisted collimation in coasting mode.
Its basic layout comprises silicon bent crystals acting as primary
collimators mounted inside two vacuum vessels. A movable 60 cm long block of
tungsten located downstream at about 90 degrees phase advance intercepts the
deflected beam.
Scintillators, Gas Electron Multiplier chambers and other beam loss monitors
measure nuclear loss rates induced by the interaction of the beam halo in the
crystal. Roman pots are installed in the path of the deflected particles and
are equipped with a Medipix detector to reconstruct the transverse distribution
of the impinging beam. Finally UA9 takes advantage of an LHC-collimator
prototype installed close to the Roman pot to help in setting the beam
conditions and to analyze the efficiency to deflect the beam. This paper
describes in details the hardware installed to study the crystal collimation
during 2010.Comment: 15pages, 11 figure, submitted to JINS
A High Luminosity e+e- Collider to study the Higgs Boson
A strong candidate for the Standard Model Scalar boson, H(126), has been
discovered by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments. In order to study
this fundamental particle with unprecedented precision, and to perform
precision tests of the closure of the Standard Model, we investigate the
possibilities offered by An e+e- storage ring collider. We use a design
inspired by the B-factories, taking into account the performance achieved at
LEP2, and imposing a synchrotron radiation power limit of 100 MW. At the most
relevant centre-of-mass energy of 240 GeV, near-constant luminosities of 10^34
cm^{-2}s^{-1} are possible in up to four collision points for a ring of 27km
circumference. The achievable luminosity increases with the bending radius, and
for 80km circumference, a luminosity of 5 10^34 cm^{-2}s^{-1} in four collision
points appears feasible. Beamstrahlung becomes relevant at these high
luminosities, leading to a design requirement of large momentum acceptance both
in the accelerating system and in the optics. The larger machine could reach
the top quark threshold, would yield luminosities per interaction point of
10^36 cm^{-2}s^{-1} at the Z pole (91 GeV) and 2 10^35 cm^{-2}s^{-1} at the W
pair production threshold (80 GeV per beam). The energy spread is reduced in
the larger ring with respect to what is was at LEP, giving confidence that beam
polarization for energy calibration purposes should be available up to the W
pair threshold. The capabilities in term of physics performance are outlined.Comment: Submitted to the European Strategy Preparatory Group 01-04-2013 new

Low-dose expression of a human apolipoprotein E transgene in macrophages restores cholesterol efflux capacity of apolipoprotein E-deficient mouse plasma
Apolipoprotein E- (apoE) deficient (E-/-) mice develop severe hyperlipidemia and diffuse atherosclerosis. Low-dose expression of a human apoE3 transgene in macrophages of apoE-deficient mice (E-/-hTgE+/0), which results in about 5% of wild-type apoE plasma levels, did not correct hyperlipidemia but significantly reduced the extent of atherosclerotic lesions. To investigate the contribution of apoE to reverse cholesterol transport, we compared plasmas of wild-type (E+/+), E-/-, and E-/-hTgE+/0 mice for the appearance of apoE-containing lipoproteins by electrophoresis and their capacity to take up and esterify 3H-labeled cholesterol from radiolabeled fibroblasts or J774 macrophages. Wild-type plasma displayed lipoproteins containing apoE that were the size of high density lipoprotein and that had either electrophoretic alpha or gamma mobilities. Similar particles were also present in E-/-hTgE+/0 plasma. Depending on incubation time, E-/- plasma released 48-74% less 3H-labeled cholesterol from fibroblasts than E+/+ plasma, whereas cholesterol efflux into E-/-hTgE+/0 plasma was only 11-25% lower than into E+/+ plasma. E-/-hTgE+/0 plasma also released 10% more 3H-labeled cholesterol from radiolabeled J774 macrophages than E-/- plasma. E+/+ and E-/-hTgE+/0 plasma each esterified significantly more cell-derived 3H-labeled cholesterol than E-/- plasma. Moreover, E-/- plasma accumulated much smaller proportions of fibroblast-derived 3H-labeled cholesterol in fractions with electrophoretic gamma and alpha mobility than E+/+ and E-/-hTgE+/0 plasma. Thus, low-dose expression of apoE in macrophages nearly restored the cholesterol efflux capacity of apoE-deficient plasma through the formation of apoE-containing particles, which efficiently take up cell-derived cholesterol, and through the increase of cholesterol esterification activity. Thus, macrophage-derived apoE may protect against atherosclerosis by increasing cholesterol efflux from arterial wall cells
l W nu production at CLIC: a window to TeV scale non-decoupled neutrinos
We discuss single heavy neutrino production e+ e- -> N nu -> l W nu, l = e,
mu, tau, at a future high energy collider like CLIC, with a centre of mass
energy of 3 TeV. This process could allow to detect heavy neutrinos with masses
of 1-2 TeV if their coupling to the electron V_eN is in the range 0.004-0.01.
We study the dependence of the limits on the heavy neutrino mass and emphasise
the crucial role of lepton flavour in the discovery of a positive signal at
CLIC energy. We present strategies to determine heavy neutrino properties once
they are discovered, namely their Dirac or Majorana character and the size and
chirality of their charged current couplings. Conversely, if no signal is
found, the bound V_eN < 0.002-0.006 would be set for masses of 1-2 TeV,
improving the present limit up to a factor of 30. We also extend previous work
examining in detail the flavour and mass dependence of the corresponding limits
at ILC, as well as the determination of heavy neutrino properties if they are
discovered at this collider.Comment: LaTeX 32 pages. Added comments and references. Matches version to
