The view from the front line: shifting beneficiary accountability and interrelatedness in the time of a global pandemic
Purpose
We discuss the beneficiary accountability implications that arose due to the COVID-19 pandemic (and resultant social distancing restrictions) for a branch of a religious non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in mainland Spain, whose main beneficiaries are homeless individuals.
Design/methodology/approach
We utilise a singular case method to observe accountability implications in the case organisation. We also utilise two sources of primary data: eight semi-structured interviews with volunteers of the NGO branch, supported by auto-ethnographic data recorded in forty-six diary entries throughout the period of research.
Findings
As the main mechanism for the discharge of beneficiary accountability for the case organisation is through action, this was affected greatly by the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing measures. Beneficiary accountability (discharged through action) changed rapidly, resulting in neglect of previous beneficiaries, carrying profound implications for charitable actors, beneficiaries and the organisation.
Research limitations/implications
Our case focuses on that of a small organisation, and therefore the generalisability of findings will be somewhat limited and context specific. The number of interviews (eight) is also relatively small.
Practical implications
Insights can be drawn for the management of volunteers, alignment of personally held accountabilities of internal actors with those of organisations and emotional aspects of accountability for NGO managers and organisers.
Originality/value
NGO accountability theorisation is enhanced via the use of Levinas' Judaic writings concerning the importance of the ritual practice of ethics for the individual involved in charitable action. The intertwined nature of personal accountability of volunteers and beneficiary accountability for the organisation is emphasised
Fast Searching in Packed Strings
Given strings and the (exact) string matching problem is to find all
positions of substrings in matching . The classical Knuth-Morris-Pratt
algorithm [SIAM J. Comput., 1977] solves the string matching problem in linear
time which is optimal if we can only read one character at the time. However,
most strings are stored in a computer in a packed representation with several
characters in a single word, giving us the opportunity to read multiple
characters simultaneously. In this paper we study the worst-case complexity of
string matching on strings given in packed representation. Let be
the lengths and , respectively, and let denote the size of the
alphabet. On a standard unit-cost word-RAM with logarithmic word size we
present an algorithm using time O\left(\frac{n}{\log_\sigma n} + m +
\occ\right). Here \occ is the number of occurrences of in . For this improves the bound of the Knuth-Morris-Pratt algorithm.
Furthermore, if our algorithm is optimal since any
algorithm must spend at least \Omega(\frac{(n+m)\log
\sigma}{\log n} + \occ) = \Omega(\frac{n}{\log_\sigma n} + \occ) time to
read the input and report all occurrences. The result is obtained by a novel
automaton construction based on the Knuth-Morris-Pratt algorithm combined with
a new compact representation of subautomata allowing an optimal

A simple rocker-induced mechanical stimulus upregulates mineralization by human osteoprogenitor cells in fibrous scaffolds
Biodegradable electrospun polycaprolactone scaffolds can be used to support bone-forming cells and could fill a thin bony defect, such as in cleft palate. Oscillatory fluid flow has been shown to stimulate bone production in human progenitor cells in monolayer culture. The aim of this study was to examine whether bone matrix production by primary human mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow or jaw periosteal tissue could be stimulated using oscillatory fluid flow supplied by a standard see-saw rocker. This was investigated for cells in two-dimensional culture and within electrospun polycaprolactone scaffolds. From day 4 of culture onwards, samples were rocked at 45 cycles/min for 1 h/day, 5 days/week (rocking group). Cell viability, calcium deposition, collagen production, alkaline phosphatase activity and vascular endothelial growth factor secretion were evaluated to assess the ability of the cells to undergo bone differentiation and induce vascularisation. Both cell types produced more mineralized tissue when subjected to rocking and supplemented with dexamethasone. Mesenchymal progenitors and primary human mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow in three-dimensional scaffolds upregulated mineral deposition after rocking culture as assessed by micro-computed tomography and alizarin red staining. Interestingly, vascular endothelial growth factor secretion, which has previously been shown to be mechanically sensitive, was not altered by rocking in this system and was inhibited by dexamethasone. Rocker culture may be a cost effective, simple pretreatment for bone tissue engineering for small defects such as cleft palate
Calculation of AGARD Wing 445.6 Flutter Using Navier-Stokes Aerodynamics
An unsteady, 3D, implicit upwind Euler/Navier-Stokes algorithm is here used to compute the flutter characteristics of Wing 445.6, the AGARD standard aeroelastic configuration for dynamic response, with a view to the discrepancy between Euler characteristics and experimental data. Attention is given to effects of fluid viscosity, structural damping, and number of structural model nodes. The flutter characteristics of the wing are determined using these unsteady generalized aerodynamic forces in a traditional V-g analysis. The V-g analysis indicates that fluid viscosity has a significant effect on the supersonic flutter boundary for this wing
Extended Superscaling of Electron Scattering from Nuclei
An extended study of scaling of the first and second kinds for inclusive
electron scattering from nuclei is presented. Emphasis is placed on the
transverse response in the kinematic region lying above the quasielastic peak.
In particular, for the region in which electroproduction of resonances is
expected to be important, approximate scaling of the second kind is observed
and the modest breaking of it is shown probably to be due to the role played by

Efficient exact pattern-matching in proteomic sequences
This paper proposes a novel algorithm for complete exact pattern-matching focusing the specificities of protein sequences (alphabet of 20 symbols) but, also highly efficient considering larger alphabets. The searching strategy uses large search windows allowing multiple alignments per iteration. A new filtering heuristic, named compatibility rule, contributed decisively to the efficiency improvement. The new algorithm’s performance is, on average, superior in comparison with its best-rated competitors
Superscaling of Inclusive Electron Scattering from Nuclei
We investigate the degree to which the concept of superscaling, initially
developed within the framework of the relativistic Fermi gas model, applies to
inclusive electron scattering from nuclei. We find that data obtained from the
low energy loss side of the quasielastic peak exhibit the superscaling
property, i.e., the scaling functions f(\psi') are not only independent of
momentum transfer (the usual type of scaling: scaling of the first kind), but
coincide for A \geq 4 when plotted versus a dimensionless scaling variable
\psi' (scaling of the second kind). We use this behavior to study as yet poorly

Customer emotions in service failure and recovery encounters
Emotions play a significant role in the workplace, and considerable attention has been given to the study of employee emotions. Customers also play a central function in organizations, but much less is known about customer emotions. This chapter reviews the growing literature on customer emotions in employee–customer interfaces with a focus on service failure and recovery encounters, where emotions are heightened. It highlights emerging themes and key findings, addresses the measurement, modeling, and management of customer emotions, and identifies future research streams. Attention is given to emotional contagion, relationships between affective and cognitive processes, customer anger, customer rage, and individual differences
