Observations of TeV gamma-rays from Mrk 421 during Dec. 2005 to Apr. 2006 with the TACTIC telescope

The TACTIC Îł\gamma-ray telescope has observed Mrk 421 on 66 clear nights from Dec. 07, 2005 to Apr. 30, 2006, totalling ∌\sim 202 hours of on-source observations. Here, we report the detection of flaring activity from the source at ≄\geq 1 TeV energy and the time-averaged differential Îł\gamma-ray spectrum in the energy range 1-11 TeV for the data taken between Dec. 27, 2005 to Feb. 07, 2006 when the source was in a relatively higher state as compared to the rest of the observation period. Analysis of this data spell, comprising about ∌\sim97h reveals the presence of a ∌12.0σ\sim 12.0 \sigma Îł\gamma-ray signal with daily flux of >> 1 Crab unit on several days. A pure power law spectrum with exponent −3.11±0.11-3.11\pm0.11 as well as a power law spectrum with an exponential cutoff (Γ=−2.51±0.26(\Gamma = -2.51\pm0.26 and E0=(4.7±2.1)TeV)E_0=(4.7\pm2.1) TeV) are found to provide reasonable fits to the inferred differential spectrum within statistical uncertainties. We believe that the TeV light curve presented here, for nearly 5 months of extensive coverage, as well as the spectral information at Îł\gamma-ray energies of >> 5 TeV provide a useful input for other groups working in the field of Îł\gamma-ray astronomy.Comment: 13pages,4figures; Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physic

Continuation-Passing C: compiling threads to events through continuations

    Get PDF
In this paper, we introduce Continuation Passing C (CPC), a programming language for concurrent systems in which native and cooperative threads are unified and presented to the programmer as a single abstraction. The CPC compiler uses a compilation technique, based on the CPS transform, that yields efficient code and an extremely lightweight representation for contexts. We provide a proof of the correctness of our compilation scheme. We show in particular that lambda-lifting, a common compilation technique for functional languages, is also correct in an imperative language like C, under some conditions enforced by the CPC compiler. The current CPC compiler is mature enough to write substantial programs such as Hekate, a highly concurrent BitTorrent seeder. Our benchmark results show that CPC is as efficient, while using significantly less space, as the most efficient thread libraries available.Comment: Higher-Order and Symbolic Computation (2012). arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1202.324

Structural, optical and magnetic properties of Ni-doped ZnO micro-rods grown by the spray pyrolysis method

Undoped and Ni-doped ZnO micro-rod arrays were successfully synthesized by the spray pyrolysis method on glass substrates. Analysis of the samples with x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy showed that these micro-rod arrays had a polycrystalline wurtzite structure with a highly c-axis preferred orientation. Photoluminescence studies at both 300 K and 10 K show that the incorporation of nickel leads to a relative increase in the visible blue light band intensity. Magnetic measurements indicated that Ni-doped ZnO samples exhibit ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature, which is possibly related to the presence of point defects

Sentinel lymph node mapping in gynecologic malignancies

Lymph node status is the most important prognostic factor for women with vulvar, cervical and endometrial carcinoma and complete lymph node dissection has historically been an integral part of the surgical treatment of these diseases. Lymphadenectomy can be morbid for patients, who may experience wound breakdown, lymphocyst formation or chronic lymphedema, among other problems. Sentinel lymph node mapping is a newer technology that allows selective removal of the first node draining a tumor thereby allowing a potentially less aggressive procedure to be performed. Sentinel node mapping is well accepted for the management of breast carcinoma and cutaneous melanoma, and has resulted in reduced morbidity without adversely affecting survival. Sentinel node mapping is currently being investigated for treatment of gynecologic cancers. Recent studies show promise for incorporating the sentinel node mapping technique for treatment of several gynecologic malignancies.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/135208/1/ijgo69.pd

The dusty SF history of high-z galaxies, modelling tools and future prospects

    Get PDF
We summarize recent advances in the determination of the cosmic history of star formation and other properties of high-z galaxies, and the relevance of this information in our understanding of the formation of structures. We emphasize the importance of dust reprocessing in the high--z universe, as demonstrated in particular by IR and sub-mm data. This demand a panchromatic approach to observations and suitable modelling tools. We spend also some words on expectations from future instruments.Comment: 8 pages, to be published in "The link between stars and cosmology", 26-30 March, 2001, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, by Kluwer, eds. An Integrated TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource to Drive High-Quality Survival Outcome Analytics

    Get PDF
For a decade, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program collected clinicopathologic annotation data along with multi-platform molecular profiles of more than 11,000 human tumors across 33 different cancer types. TCGA clinical data contain key features representing the democratized nature of the data collection process. To ensure proper use of this large clinical dataset associated with genomic features, we developed a standardized dataset named the TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource (TCGA-CDR), which includes four major clinical outcome endpoints. In addition to detailing major challenges and statistical limitations encountered during the effort of integrating the acquired clinical data, we present a summary that includes endpoint usage recommendations for each cancer type. These TCGA-CDR findings appear to be consistent with cancer genomics studies independent of the TCGA effort and provide opportunities for investigating cancer biology using clinical correlates at an unprecedented scale. Analysis of clinicopathologic annotations for over 11,000 cancer patients in the TCGA program leads to the generation of TCGA Clinical Data Resource, which provides recommendations of clinical outcome endpoint usage for 33 cancer types

Should science educators deal with the science/religion issue?

    Get PDF
I begin by examining the natures of science and religion before looking at the ways in which they relate to one another. I then look at a number of case studies that centre on the relationships between science and religion, including attempts to find mechanisms for divine action in quantum theory and chaos theory, creationism, genetic engineering and the writings of Richard Dawkins. Finally, I consider some of the pedagogical issues that would need to be considered if the science/religion issue is to be addressed in the classroom. I conclude that there are increasing arguments in favour of science educators teaching about the science/religion issue. The principal reason for this is to help students better to learn science. However, such teaching makes greater demands on science educators than has generally been the case. Certain of these demands are identified and some specific suggestions are made as to how a science educator might deal with the science/religion issue. © 2008 Taylor & Francis
