The r-modes in accreting neutron stars with magneto-viscous boundary layers
We explore the dynamics of the r-modes in accreting neutron stars in two
ways. First, we explore how dissipation in the magneto-viscous boundary layer
(MVBL) at the crust-core interface governs the damping of r-mode perturbations
in the fluid interior. Two models are considered: one assuming an
ordinary-fluid interior, the other taking the core to consist of superfluid
neutrons, type II superconducting protons, and normal electrons. We show,
within our approximations, that no solution to the magnetohydrodynamic
equations exists in the superfluid model when both the neutron and proton
vortices are pinned. However, if just one species of vortex is pinned, we can
find solutions. When the neutron vortices are pinned and the proton vortices
are unpinned there is much more dissipation than in the ordinary-fluid model,
unless the pinning is weak. When the proton vortices are pinned and the neutron
vortices are unpinned the dissipation is comparable or slightly less than that
for the ordinary-fluid model, even when the pinning is strong. We also find in
the superfluid model that relatively weak radial magnetic fields ~ 10^9 G (10^8
K / T)^2 greatly affect the MVBL, though the effects of mutual friction tend to
counteract the magnetic effects. Second, we evolve our two models in time,
accounting for accretion, and explore how the magnetic field strength, the
r-mode saturation amplitude, and the accretion rate affect the cyclic evolution
of these stars. If the r-modes control the spin cycles of accreting neutron
stars we find that magnetic fields can affect the clustering of the spin
frequencies of low mass x-ray binaries (LMXBs) and the fraction of these that

Comparison of depression and anxiety symptom networks in reporters and non-reporters of lifetime trauma in two samples of differing severity
Background: Reported trauma is associated with differences in the course and outcomes of depression and anxiety. However, no research has explored the association between reported trauma and patterns of clinically relevant symptoms of both depression and anxiety. Methods: We used network analysis to investigate associations between reported trauma and depression and anxiety symptom interactions in affected individuals from the Genetic Links to Anxiety and Depression (GLAD) Study (n = 17720), and population volunteers from the UK Biobank (n = 11120). Participants with current moderate symptoms of depression or anxiety were grouped into reporters and non-reporters of lifetime trauma. Networks of 16 depression and anxiety symptoms in the two groups were compared using the network comparison test. Results: In the GLAD Study, networks of reporters and non-reporters of lifetime trauma did not differ on any metric. In the UK Biobank, the symptom network of reporters had significantly greater density (7.80) than the network of non-reporters (7.05). Limitations: The data collected in the GLAD Study and the UK Biobank are self-reported with validated or semi-validated questionnaires. Conclusions: Reported lifetime trauma was associated with stronger interactions between symptoms of depression and anxiety in population volunteers. Differences between reporters and non-reporters may not be observed in individuals with severe depression and/or anxiety due to limited variance in the presentation of disorder
Competing orders in a magnetic field: spin and charge order in the cuprate superconductors
We describe two-dimensional quantum spin fluctuations in a superconducting
Abrikosov flux lattice induced by a magnetic field applied to a doped Mott
insulator. Complete numerical solutions of a self-consistent large N theory
provide detailed information on the phase diagram and on the spatial structure
of the dynamic spin spectrum. Our results apply to phases with and without
long-range spin density wave order and to the magnetic quantum critical point
separating these phases. We discuss the relationship of our results to a number
of recent neutron scattering measurements on the cuprate superconductors in the
presence of an applied field. We compute the pinning of static charge order by
the vortex cores in the `spin gap' phase where the spin order remains
dynamically fluctuating, and argue that these results apply to recent scanning
tunnelling microscopy (STM) measurements. We show that with a single typical
set of values for the coupling constants, our model describes the field
dependence of the elastic neutron scattering intensities, the absence of
satellite Bragg peaks associated with the vortex lattice in existing neutron
scattering observations, and the spatial extent of charge order in STM
observations. We mention implications of our theory for NMR experiments. We
also present a theoretical discussion of more exotic states that can be built
out of the spin and charge order parameters, including spin nematics and phases

Young and Intermediate-age Distance Indicators
Distance measurements beyond geometrical and semi-geometrical methods, rely
mainly on standard candles. As the name suggests, these objects have known
luminosities by virtue of their intrinsic proprieties and play a major role in
our understanding of modern cosmology. The main caveats associated with
standard candles are their absolute calibration, contamination of the sample
from other sources and systematic uncertainties. The absolute calibration
mainly depends on their chemical composition and age. To understand the impact
of these effects on the distance scale, it is essential to develop methods
based on different sample of standard candles. Here we review the fundamental
properties of young and intermediate-age distance indicators such as Cepheids,
Mira variables and Red Clump stars and the recent developments in their

Fuel flexible power stations: Utilisation of ash co-products as additives for NOx emissions control
This work investigated the effects of different ash co-products on the combustion of solid fuels, in particular the fuel-nitrogen behaviour: The fuel-ash additive combinations investigated were: Firstly, biomass ashes added to bituminous coals, representative of those used in power stations; Secondly, a low reactivity coal; Thirdly, a high-N biomass (olive cake) was chosen as a high reactivity fuel and studied with a power-station pulverised coal fly ash as an additive. These five solid fuels have a wide fuel ratio FR (i.e. the ratio of fixed carbon to volatile matter content). The ash additives were a pulverised fly ash (PFA) and a furnace bottom ash (FBA) from wood pellet combustion in a UK power station. Fuels (with and without additives) were studied for nitrogen partitioning during (i) devolatilisation and for (ii) NOX formation during combustion, using two different electrically heated drop tube furnaces (DTF) operating at 1373 K. Devolatilisation was also studied via ballistic-heated thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The extent of impact of additives on volatile yield under devolatilisation conditions was dependent on fuel ratio, high FR has the greatest increase in volatile release when co-feeding the additive. Under devolatilisation conditions, there is a correlation between volatile nitrogen and carbon conversion for all the fuels tested. Thus, additives liberate more volatile-nitrogen from the coals and also deliver enhanced carbon conversion. A mechanism is proposed whereby ultra-fine particles and vapours of reactive compounds from the additives interact with the reacting fuel/char particle and influence N-release during both devolatilisation and char burn-out. The enhanced conversion of fuel-nitrogen to volatile-nitrogen and the reduction of char-nitrogen can lead to reductions of NOX emissions in emissions-controlled furnaces. This approach could assist fuel-flexible power stations in achieving their NOX emission targets
Internal representations of smell in the Drosophila brain
Recent advances in sensory neuroscience using Drosophila olfaction as a model system have revealed brain maps representing the external world. Once we understand how the brain's built-in capability generates the internal olfactory maps, we can then elaborate how the brain computes and makes decision to elicit complex behaviors. Here, we review current progress in mapping Drosophila olfactory circuits and discuss their relationships with innate olfactory behaviors
Relativistic superfluid models for rotating neutron stars
This article starts by providing an introductory overview of the theoretical
mechanics of rotating neutron stars as developped to account for the frequency
variations, and particularly the discontinuous glitches, observed in pulsars.
The theory suggests, and the observations seem to confirm, that an essential
role is played by the interaction between the solid crust and inner layers
whose superfluid nature allows them to rotate independently. However many
significant details remain to be clarified, even in much studied cases such as
the Crab and Vela. The second part of this article is more technical,
concentrating on just one of the many physical aspects that needs further
development, namely the provision of a satisfactorily relativistic (local but
not microscopic) treatment of the effects of the neutron superfluidity that is
