Compton Polarimetry at a TEV Collider
An electron beam polarization of 80% or greater will be a key feature of a 1
TeV Linear Collider. Accurate measurements of the beam polarization will
therefore be needed. We discuss design considerations and capabilities for a
Compton-scattering polarimeter located in the extraction line from the
Interaction Point. Polarization measurements with 1% accuracy taken parasitic
to collision data look feasible, but detailed simulations are needed.
Polarimeter design issues are similar for both electron-positron and
electron-electron collider modes, though beam disruption creates more
difficulties for the electron-electron mode.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Vortex Plastic Flow, , Deep in the Bose Glass and Mott-Insulator Regimes
We present simulations of flux-gradient-driven superconducting vortices
interacting with strong columnar pinning defects as an external field is
quasi-statically swept from zero through a matching field . We
analyze several measurable quantities, including the local flux density , magnetization , critical current , and the
individual vortex flow paths. We find a significant change in the behavior of
these quantities as the local flux density crosses , and quantify it
for many microscopic pinning parameters. Further, we find that for a given pin
density can be enhanced by maximizing the distance between the pins

An allele-selective inter-chromosomal protein bridge supports monogenic antigen expression in the African trypanosome
UPF1-like helicases play roles in telomeric heterochromatin formation and X-chromosome inactivation, and also in monogenic variant surface glycoprotein (VSG) expression via VSG exclusion-factor-2 (VEX2), a UPF1-related protein in the African trypanosome. We show that VEX2 associates with chromatin specifically at the single active VSG expression site on chromosome 6, forming an allele-selective connection, via VEX1, to the trans-splicing locus on chromosome 9, physically bridging two chromosomes and the VSG transcription and splicing compartments. We further show that the VEX-complex is multimeric and self-regulates turnover to tightly control its abundance. Using single cell transcriptomics following VEX2-depletion, we observed simultaneous derepression of many other telomeric VSGs and multi-allelic VSG expression in individual cells. Thus, an allele-selective, inter-chromosomal, and self-limiting VEX1-2 bridge supports monogenic VSG expression and multi-allelic VSG exclusion
Compact jets as probes for sub-parsec scale regions in AGN
Compact relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei offer an effective tool
for investigating the physics of nuclear regions in galaxies. The emission
properties, dynamics, and evolution of jets in AGN are closely connected to the
characteristics of the central supermassive black hole, accretion disk and
broad-line region in active galaxies. Recent results from studies of the
nuclear regions in several active galaxies with prominent outflows are reviewed

The asymmetry of the proton in a Pion Cloud Model approach
We study the asymmetry of the proton in a model approach
in which hadronic fluctuations of the nucleon are generated through gluon
splitting and recombination mechanisms. Within this framework, it is shown that
the
asymmetry of the proton is consistently described by including only
nucleon fluctuations to and bound states. Predictions
of the model closely agree with the recent experimental data of the E866/NuSea

Mirror Symmetry and Other Miracles in Superstring Theory
The dominance of string theory in the research landscape of quantum gravity
physics (despite any direct experimental evidence) can, I think, be justified
in a variety of ways. Here I focus on an argument from mathematical fertility,
broadly similar to Hilary Putnam's 'no miracles argument' that, I argue, many
string theorists in fact espouse. String theory leads to many surprising,
useful, and well-confirmed mathematical 'predictions' - here I focus on mirror
symmetry. These predictions are made on the basis of general physical
principles entering into string theory. The success of the mathematical
predictions are then seen as evidence for framework that generated them. I
attempt to defend this argument, but there are nonetheless some serious
objections to be faced. These objections can only be evaded at a high

An integrated dual process simulation model of alcohol use behaviours in individuals, with application to US population-level consumption, 1984–2012
Introduction
The Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) describes how attitudes, norms and perceived behavioural control guide health behaviour, including alcohol consumption. Dual Process Theories (DPT) suggest that alongside these reasoned pathways, behaviour is influenced by automatic processes that are determined by the frequency of engagement in the health behaviour in the past. We present a computational model integrating TPB and DPT to determine drinking decisions for simulated individuals. We explore whether this model can reproduce historical patterns in US population alcohol use and simulate a hypothetical scenario, “Dry January”, to demonstrate the utility of the model for appraising the impact of policy interventions on population alcohol use.
Method
Constructs from the TPB pathway were computed using equations from an existing individual-level dynamic simulation model of alcohol use. The DPT pathway was initialised by simulating individuals’ past drinking using data from a large US survey. Individuals in the model were from a US population microsimulation that accounts for births, deaths and migration (1984–2015). On each modelled day, for each individual, we calculated standard drinks consumed using the TPB or DPT pathway. In each year we computed total population alcohol use prevalence, frequency and quantity. The model was calibrated to alcohol use data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (1984–2004).
Results
The model was a good fit to prevalence and frequency but a poorer fit to quantity of alcohol consumption, particularly in males. Simulating Dry January in each year led to a small to moderate reduction in annual population drinking.
Conclusion
This study provides further evidence, at the whole population level, that a combination of reasoned and implicit processes are important for alcohol use. Alcohol misuse interventions should target both processes. The integrated TPB-DPT simulation model is a useful tool for estimating changes in alcohol consumption following hypothetical population interventions
