An optical packet switch employing shared parametric wavelength converters
The analysis of a shared-per-node OPS switch employing parametric wavelength converters (SPN-PWC) is reported. The results demonstrate a 38 - 63% reduction in the number of converters when SPN-PWC is compared with SPN employing single-channel wavelength converters
The effect of home storage conditions and packaging materials on the quality of frozen green beans
Home storage is the final step of the frozen foods distribution chain, and little is known on how it affects the products quality.
The present research describes frozen green beans (Phaseolus vulgaris, L.) quality retention profile during the recommended
‘star marking’ system dates, at the storage temperatures of þ5,26, 212 and 218 8C (along 1, 4, 14 and 60 days, respectively).
The quality profile was assessed by a simulation system. Simulations were set by a response surface methodology to access
the effect of different packaging materials (thermal conductivities and thickness), surface heat transfer coefficient, and
refrigerator dynamics (effect of refrigeration cycles at the different storage temperatures) on the average retentions of Ascorbic
Acid, total vitamin C, colour and flavour.
Green beans quality losses along frozen storage are significantly influenced by temperature, refrigerator dynamics and kinetic
properties. Quality is also highly dependent on packaging materials thermal insulation (e.g. at temperatures above the melting
point). Temperature cycles inside frozen chambers have a long term effect, and at the higher storage temperatures (e.g.
T . 26 8C) are detrimental to frozen green beans quality after shorter periods
A Hessenberg Markov chain for fast fibre delay line length optimization
In this paper we present an approach to compute the invariant vector of the N + 1 state Markov chain P presented in (Rogiest et al., Lecture Notes in Computer Science, NET-COOP 2007 Special Issue, pp. 4465:185-194) to determine the loss rate of an FDL buffer consisting of N lines, by solving a related Hessenberg system (i.e., a Markov chain skip-free in one direction). This system is obtained by inserting additional time instants in the sample paths of P and allows us to compute the loss rate for various FDL lengths by solving a single system. This is shown to be especially effective in reducing the computation time of the heuristic LRA algorithm presented in (Lambert et al., Proc. NAEC 2005, pp. 545-555) to optimize the FDL lengths, where improvements of several orders of magnitude can be realized

Hippocampal Insulin Signaling And Neuroprotection Mediated By Physical Exercise In Alzheimeŕs Disease
Epidemiological studies indicate continuous increases in the prevalence of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) in the next few decades. The key feature of this disease is hippocampal neurodegeneration. This structure has an important role in learning and memory. Intense research efforts have sought to elucidate neuroprotective mechanisms responsible for hippocampal integrity. Insulin signaling seems to be a very promising pathway for the prevention and treatment of AD. This hormone has been described as a powerful activator of neuronal survival. Recent research showed that reduced insulin sensitivity leads to low-grade inflammation, and both phenomena are closely related to AD genesis. Concomitantly, exercise has been shown to exert anti-inflammatory effects and to promote improvement in insulin signaling in the hippocampus, which supports neuronal survival and constitutes an interesting non-pharmacological alternative for the prevention and treatment of AD. This review examines recent advances in understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in hippocampal neuroprotection mediated by exercise.2

Specimen dimensions influence the measurement of material properties in tendon fascicles
Stress, strain and modulus are regularly used to characterize material properties of tissue samples. However, when comparing results from different studies it is evident the reported material properties, particularly failure strains, vary hugely. The aim of our study was to characterize how and why specimen length and cross-sectional area (CSA) appear to influence failure stress, strain and modulus in fascicles from two functionally different tendons. Fascicles were dissected from five rat tails and five bovine foot extensors, their diameters determined by a laser micrometer, and loaded to failure at a range of grip-to-grip lengths. Strain to failure significantly decreased with increasing in specimen length in both rat and bovine fascicles, while modulus increased. Specimen length did not influence failure stress in rat tail fascicles, although in bovine fascicles it was significantly lower in the longer 40 mm specimens compared to 5 and 10 mm specimens. The variations in failure strain and modulus with sample length could be predominantly explained by end-effects. However, it was also evident that strain fields along the sample length were highly variable and notably larger towards the ends of the sample than the mid-section even at distances in excess of 5 mm from the gripping points. Failure strain, stress and modulus correlated significantly with CSA at certain specimen lengths. Our findings have implications for the mechanical testing of tendon tissue: while it is not always possible to control for fascicle length and/or CSA, these parameters have to be taken into account when comparing samples of different dimensions
