    A broad-coverage distributed connectionist model of visual word recognition

    In this study we describe a distributed connectionist model of morphological processing, covering a realistically sized sample of the English language. The purpose of this model is to explore how effects of discrete, hierarchically structured morphological paradigms, can arise as a result of the statistical sub-regularities in the mapping between word forms and word meanings. We present a model that learns to produce at its output a realistic semantic representation of a word, on presentation of a distributed representation of its orthography. After training, in three experiments, we compare the outputs of the model with the lexical decision latencies for large sets of English nouns and verbs. We show that the model has developed detailed representations of morphological structure, giving rise to effects analogous to those observed in visual lexical decision experiments. In addition, we show how the association between word form and word meaning also give rise to recently reported differences between regular and irregular verbs, even in their completely regular present-tense forms. We interpret these results as underlining the key importance for lexical processing of the statistical regularities in the mappings between form and meaning

    Trepan Reloaded: A Knowledge-driven Approach to Explaining Artificial Neural Networks

    Explainability in Artificial Intelligence has been revived as a topic of active research by the need of conveying safety and trust to users in the `how' and `why' of automated decision-making. Whilst a plethora of approaches have been developed for post-hoc explainability, only a few focus on how to use domain knowledge, and how this influences the understandability of global explanations from the users' perspective. In this paper, we show how ontologies help the understandability of global post-hoc explanations, presented in the form of symbolic models. In particular, we build on Trepan, an algorithm that explains artificial neural networks by means of decision trees, and we extend it to include ontologies modeling domain knowledge in the process of generating explanations. We present the results of a user study that measures the understandability of decision trees using a syntactic complexity measure, and through time and accuracy of responses as well as reported user confidence and understandability. The user study considers domains where explanations are critical, namely, in finance and medicine. The results show that decision trees generated with our algorithm, taking into account domain knowledge, are more understandable than those generated by standard Trepan without the use of ontologies

    Differential associations of APOE-epsilon 2 and APOE-epsilon 4 alleles with PET-measured amyloid-beta and tau deposition in older individuals without dementia

    Purpose: To examine associations between the APOE-Δ2 and APOE-Δ4 alleles and core Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathological hallmarks as measured by amyloid-ÎČ (AÎČ) and tau PET in older individuals without dementia. Methods: We analyzed data from 462 ADNI participants without dementia who underwent AÎČ ([18F]florbetapir or [18F]florbetaben) and tau ([18F]flortaucipir) PET, structural MRI, and cognitive testing. Employing APOE-Δ3 homozygotes as the reference group, associations between APOE-Δ2 and APOE-Δ4 carriership with global AÎČ PET and regional tau PET measures (entorhinal cortex (ERC), inferior temporal cortex, and Braak-V/VI neocortical composite regions) were investigated using linear regression models. In a subset of 156 participants, we also investigated associations between APOE genotype and regional tau accumulation over time using linear mixed models. Finally, we assessed whether AÎČ mediated the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between APOE genotype and tau. Results: Compared to APOE-Δ3 homozygotes, APOE-Δ2 carriers had lower global AÎČ burden (ÎČstd [95% confidence interval (CI)]: − 0.31 [− 0.45, − 0.16], p = 0.034) but did not differ on regional tau burden or tau accumulation over time. APOE-Δ4 participants showed higher AÎČ (ÎČstd [95%CI]: 0.64 [0.42, 0.82], p < 0.001) and tau burden (ÎČstd range: 0.27-0.51, all p < 0.006). In mediation analyses, APOE-Δ4 only retained an AÎČ-independent effect on tau in the ERC. APOE-Δ4 showed a trend towards increased tau accumulation over time in Braak-V/VI compared to APOE-Δ3 homozygotes (ÎČstd [95%CI]: 0.10 [− 0.02, 0.18], p = 0.11), and this association was fully mediated by baseline AÎČ. Conclusion: Our data suggest that the established protective effect of the APOE-Δ2 allele against developing clinical AD is primarily linked to resistance against AÎČ deposition rather than tau pathology

    Design of super-paramagnetic bilayer films based on chitosan and sodium alginate

    Bilayer films that combine chitosan and alginate, two natural polysaccharides, and magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MNPs) were obtained. Physical and microscopic observations revealed that chitosan and alginate interact strongly through their surfaces, which is attributed to the formation of a polyelectrolyte complex at the interface. The diameter of the individual MNPs was about 10 nm, although in the films they appear arranged in clusters with sizes ranging from 23 nm to several times larger that are formed by collapsed individual particles. All bilayers containing MNP behave as super-paramagnetic materials, exhibiting magnetic synergic effects in comparison to single carbohydrate films. Thus, obtained films could find novel and interesting applications as pH responsiveness systems, pad dressings including hyperthermia, adsorption of positive and negative charged pollutants, etc.Fil: Kloster, Gianina Andrea.     Pof8 is a La-related protein and a constitutive component of telomerase in fission yeast

    Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) and the non-coding telomerase RNA subunit (TR) constitute the core of telomerase. Here we now report that the putative F-box protein Pof8 is also a constitutive component of active telomerase in fission yeast. Pof8 functions in a hierarchical assembly pathway by promoting the binding of the Lsm2-8 complex to telomerase RNA, which in turn promotes binding of the catalytic subunit. Loss of Pof8 reduces TER1 stability, causes a severe assembly defect, and results in critically short telomeres. Structure profile searches identified similarities between Pof8 and telomerase subunits from ciliated protozoa, making Pof8 next to TERT the most widely conserved telomerase subunits identified to date

    Synapse-Associated Expression of an Acetylcholine Receptor-Inducing Protein, ARIA/Heregulin, and Its Putative Receptors, ErbB2 and ErbB3, in Developing Mammalian Muscle

    AbstractDeveloping motor axons induce synaptic specializations in muscle fibers, including preferential transcription of acetylcholine receptor (AChR) subunit genes by subsynaptic nuclei. One candidate nerve-derived signaling molecule is AChR-inducing activity (ARIA)/heregulin, a ligand of the erbB family of receptor tyrosine kinases. Here, we asked whether ARIA and erbB kinases are expressed in patterns compatible with their proposed signaling roles. In developing muscle, ARIA was present not only at synaptic sites, but also in extrasynaptic regions of the muscle fiber. ARIA was synthesized, rather than merely taken up, by muscle cells, as indicated by the presence of ARIA mRNA in muscle and of ARIA protein in a clonal muscle cell line. ARIA-responsive myotubes expressed both erbB2 and erbB3, but little EGFR/erbB1 or erbB4. In adults, erbB2 and erbB3 were localized to the postsynaptic membrane. ErbB3 was restricted to the postsynaptic membrane perinatally, at a time when ARIA was still broadly distributed. Thus, our data are consistent with a model in which ARIA interacts with erbB kinases on the muscle cell surface to provide a local signal that induces synaptic expression of AChR genes. However, much of the ARIA is produced by muscle, not nerve, and the spatially restricted response may result from the localization of erbB kinases as well as of ARIA. Finally, we show that erbB3 is not concentrated at synaptic sites in mutant mice that lack rapsyn, a cytoskeletal protein required for AChR clustering, suggesting that pathways for synaptic AChR expression and clustering interact

    EROS Variable Stars : Discovery of Beat Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud and the effect of metallicity on pulsation

    We report the discovery of eleven beat Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud, using data obtained by the EROS microlensing survey. Four stars are beating in the fundamental and first overtone mode (F/1OT), seven are beating in the first and second overtone (1OT/2OT). The SMC F/1OT ratio is systematically higher than the LMC F/1OT, while the 1OT/2OT period ratio in the SMC Cepheids is the same as the LMC one.Comment: 4 pages, Latex file with 4 .ps figures. accepted for publication in A A Letter

    Structural and magnetic behavior of ferrogels obtained by freezing thawing of polyvinyl alcohol/poly (acrylic acid) (PAA)-coated iron oxide nanoparticles

    Superparamagnetic ferrogels with high swelling ability and potential applications as solvent absorbers and stimuli-responsive drug delivery devices were obtained by a non-toxic and environmentally friendly route based on dispersion of poly(acrylic acid)-coated iron oxide nanoparticles (PAA-coated NPs) in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solutions followed by freezing–thawing. Presence of carboxylate groups arising from the PAA coating allowed hydrogen bonding formation between NPs and PVA and enabled the synthesis of optically homogenous, superparamagnetic materials formed by a homogenous distribution of NPs diffuse clusters in the PVA matrix. The addition of PAA-coated NPs produced a remarkable increase in crystallinity degree, thermal degradation and swelling percentage respect to the neat matrix, which demonstrates that ferrogels with improved properties can be obtained by this procedure. Thereafter, combination of a cryogenic technique with the use of non-toxic components and magnetic NPs coated by a pH sensitive polymer makes these ferrogels very promising for applications in the biomedical field.Fil: Moscoso Londoño, Oscar.     The effect of metallicity on the Cepheid distance scale and its implications for the Hubble constant (H0H_0) determination

    Recent HST determinations of the expansion's rate of the Universe (the Hubble constant, H_0) assumed that the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation at V and I are independent of metallicity (Freedman, et al., 1996, Saha et al., 1996, Tanvir et al., 1995). The three groups obtain different vales for H_0. We note that most of this discrepancy stems from the asumption (by both groups) that the Period-Luminosity relation is independent of metallicity. We come to this conclusion as a result of our study of the Period-Luminosity relation of 481 Cepheids with 3 millions two colour measurements in the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud obtained as a by-product of the EROS microlensing survey. We find that the derived interstellar absorption corrections are particularly sensitive to the metallicity and when our result is applied to recent estimates based on HST Cepheids observations it makes the low-H_0 values higher and the high-H_0 value lower, bringing those discrepant estimates into agrement around H0≈70km/sMpc−1H_0 \approx 70 km/s Mpc^{-1}.Comment: 4 pages, Latex, with 2 .ps accepted for publication astronomy and astrophysics Letter
