    Brassica spp cover crop affects soil microbial activity, carbon and nitrogen nutrient dynamics

    A general positive effect of Brassica on soil microbial biomass and its activity was observed at all European sites in no tilled soil at both sampling date. Conversely, Brassica under tillage may produce a negative effect on biochemical properties after CC suppression. The effect of Brassica on C and N dynamics differed among the european sites when soil was tilled. These preliminary results establish the bases for the evaluation of the interaction between the pedoclimatic conditions and Brassica spp effect on soil properties

    The positive effect of Living Mulch on soil microbial biomass and its activity was more evident in the Mediterranean environment starting from the main crop planting (t1) . Conversely, in the Northern site the effect of LM was significant in not tilled soil at the main crop harvesting (t2). These preliminary results establish the bases for the final evaluation at end of the project, on the importance of pedoclimatic conditions to prove the effect of Living Mulch at different tillage levels

    Local seismic response studies in the north-western portion of the August 24th, 2016 Mw 6.0 earthquake affected area. The case of Visso village (Central Apennines).

    In this work, we investigate the possible causes of the differential damaging observed in Visso village (Central Apennines, about 28 km north from the August 24th, 2016 Mw 6.0 earthquake epicenter). Following insights from the available geological cartography at 1:10.000 scale, a preliminary geophysical survey has been performed in the damaged area in order to constrain geometries and extent of the subsoil lithotypes. Then, these results have been used to retrieve a Vs profile close to the most heavily damaged buildings. This latter has been used as input for a numerical analysis aimed at deriving the motion at the ground level in the study area. In particular, a linear equivalent simulation has been performed by means of EERA code and the waveform has been obtained convolving the time history recorded during the August 24th, 2016 mainshock at Spoleto Monteluco (SPM) site. Our preliminary results indicate a possible correlation of damaging to the thickness and shape of the geological units. Nevertheless, further analyses are necessary to highlight any 2D basin and / non- linear soil behaviour effects in order to compare them to the intrinsic buildings vulnerability, according to the EMS98 guidelines

    Evaluation of site effects by means of 3D numerical modeling of the Palatine Hill, Roman Forum, and Coliseum archaeological area

    In this study we perform 3D nonlinear analyses of seismic site response of the Central Archaeological Area of Rome, which includes the Palatine Hill, Roman Forum, Circus Maximus, and Coliseum. The geological bedrock of the study area is constituted by a Pliocene marine sandy-clayey unit (MonteVaticano Formation, MVA). At top of this unit a continental Quaternary succession is superimposed. Previous studies available for this area (Pagliaroli et al. 2014a; Mancini et al. 2014; Moscatelli et al. 2014) enabled to define a detailed three-dimensional reconstruction of the subsoil conditions, characterized by complex surficial and buried morphology, lateral heterogeneities and dynamic properties of involved material, natural as well as anthropogenic. The area of Rome is affected by earthquakes from different seismogenic districts: i) the central Apennine mountain chain (D = 90–130km and M = 6.7–7.0); ii) the Colli Albani volcanic district (D = 20km and M=5.5); iii) Rome area itself, which is characterized by rare, shallow, low-magnitude events (M < 5). Both natural and artificial signals have been considered to define the input motion for the numerical modeling of the site response of the whole archeological area. This was accomplished by means of the finite differences code FLAC3D. To evaluate the seismic hazard and, consequently, to assess possible priorities for seismic retrofitting of the monuments, contour maps of Housner intensity amplification ratio FH (defined as the ratio between Housner intensity at the top of the model and the corresponding input at the bedrock outcrop), are carried out. To cover the entire range of natural periods pertaining to the monuments in the examined area, FH was evaluated over three ranges of period: 0.1–0.5s, 0.5–1.0s, and 1.0–2.0s. Numerical results shown that: 1) within the range of periods 0.1–0.5s, high values of FH = 2.2–2.6 occur both in correspondence of narrow valleys filled with soft alluvial deposits and at top of Palatine Hill; 2) within the range of periods 0.5–1.0s, high values of FH occur in correspondence of the deepest valleys; 3) within the range of periods 1.0–2.0s, low values of FH occur except in correspondence of the deepest valleys.Results show a good agreement with the previous 2D numerical modeling and with the microzonation maps (Pagliaroli et al 2014a, b), even if interesting differences show up highlighting the usefulness of 3D modeling in such complex settings. Such results are significantly relevant for the monumental and archaeological heritage of this area, as it is highly vulnerable due to its old age and state of conservation

    Laser optogalvanic (LOG) signals at 667.7, 751.5, and 696.5 nm from the 3 P 1 and 3 P 2 levels of Ar were studied at a pressure of 250 mTorr in a rf glow discharge. Signals with unexpected signs and time dependences were found. The results are interpreted as being due to radiative trapping effects and collisional mixing between resonance and metastable levels. An average electron energy of 2.1 eV is derived from modeling the data

    Analysis of Snow Cover in the Sibillini Mountains in Central Italy

    Research on solid precipitation and snow cover, especially in mountainous areas, suffers from problems related to the lack of on-site observations and the low reliability of measurements, which is often due to instruments that are not suitable for the environmental conditions. In this context, the study area is the Monti Sibillini National Park, and it is no exception, as it is a mountainous area located in central Italy, where the measurements are scarce and fragmented. The purpose of this research is to provide a characterization of the snow cover with regard to maximum annual snow depth, average snow depth during the snowy period, and days with snow cover on the ground in the Monti Sibillini National Park area, by means of ground weather stations, and also analyzing any trends over the last 30 years. For this research, in order to obtain reliable snow cover data, only data from weather stations equipped with a sonar system and manual weather stations, where the surveyor goes to the site each morning and checks the thickness of the snowpack and records, it were collected. The data were collected from 1 November to 30 April each year for 30 years, from 1991 to 2020; six weather stations were taken into account, while four more were added as of 1 January 2010. The longer period was used to assess possible ongoing trends, which proved to be very heterogeneous in the results, predominantly negative in the case of days with snow cover on the ground, while trends were predominantly positive for maximum annual snow depth and distributed between positive and negative for the average annual snow depth. The shorter period, 2010–2022, on the other hand, ensured the presence of a larger number of weather stations and was used to assess the correlation and presence of clusters between the various weather stations and, consequently, in the study area. Furthermore, in this way, an up-to-date nivometric classification of the study area was obtained (in terms of days with snow on the ground, maximum height of snowpack, and average height of snowpack), filling a gap where there had been no nivometric study in the aforementioned area. The interpolations were processed using geostatistical techniques such as co-kriging with altitude as an independent variable, allowing fairly precise spatialization, analyzing the results of cross-validation. This analysis could be a useful tool for hydrological modeling of the area, as well as having a clear use related to tourism and vegetation, which is extremely influenced by the nivometric variables in its phenology. In addition, this analysis could also be considered a starting point for the calibration of more recent satellite products dedicated to snow cover detection, in order to further improve the compiled climate characterizatio

    Macroseismic effects highlight site response in Rome and its geological signature

    A detailed analysis of the earthquake effects on the urban area of Rome has been conducted for the L’Aquila sequence, which occurred in April 2009, by using an on-line macroseismic questionnaire. Intensity residuals calculated using the mainshock and four aftershocks are analyzed in the light of a very accurate and original geological reconstruction of the subsoil of Rome based on a large amount of wells. The aim of this work is to highlight ground motion amplification areas and to find a correlation with the geological settings at a sub-regional scale, putting in evidence the extreme complexity of the phenomenon and the difficulty of making a simplified model. Correlations between amplification areas and both near-surface and deep geology were found. Moreover, the detailed scale of investigation has permitted us to find a correlation between seismic amplification in recent alluvial settings and subsiding zones, and between heard seismic sound and Tiber alluvial sediments

    Large electric gradients are required for a variety of new applications, notably including the extreme high brightness electron sources for X-ray free electron lasers (FELs), RF photoinjector, industrial and medical accelerators and linear accelerators for particle physics colliders. In the framework of a INFN-LNF, SLAC (USA), KEK (Japan), UCLA (Los Angeles) collaboration, the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (LNF) is involved in the modelling, development and test of RF structures devoted to acceleration with high gradient electric field of particles through metal device. In order to improve the maximum sustainable gradients in normal conducting RF accelerating structures, we had to minimize the breakdown and the dark current. To this purpose the study of new materials and manufacturing techniques is mandatory to identify solutions to such extremely demanding applications. We considered the possibility to coat copper (and other metals) with a relatively thick film to improve and optimize breakdown performances. We present here the first characterization of MoO3 films deposited on copper by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) starting from a commercial MoO3 target

    Comparative analysis of inbreeding parameters and runs of homozygosity islands in 2 Italian autochthonous cattle breeds mainly raised in the Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese production region

    Reggiana and Modenese are autochthonous cattle breeds, reared in the North of Italy, that can be mainly distinguished for their standard coat color (Reggiana is red, whereas Modenese is white with some pale gray shades). Almost all milk produced by these breeds is transformed into 2 mono-breed branded Parmigiano-Reggiano cheeses, from which farmers receive the economic incomes needed for the sustainable conservation of these animal genetic resources. After the setting up of their herd books in 1960s, these breeds experienced a strong reduction in the population size that was subsequently reverted starting in the 1990s (Reggiana) or more recently (Modenese) reaching at present a total of about 2,800 and 500 registered cows, respectively. Due to the small population size of these breeds, inbreeding is a very important cause of concern for their conservation programs. Inbreeding is traditionally estimated using pedigree data, which are summarized in an inbreeding coefficient calculated at the individual level (FPED). However, incompleteness of pedigree information and registration errors can affect the effectiveness of conservation strategies. High-throughput SNP genotyping platforms allow investigation of inbreeding using genome information that can overcome the limits of pedigree data. Several approaches have been proposed to estimate genomic inbreeding, with the use of runs of homozygosity (ROH) considered to be the more appropriate. In this study, several pedigree and genomic inbreeding parameters, calculated using the whole herd book populations or considering genotyping information (GeneSeek GGP Bovine 150K) from 1,684 Reggiana cattle and 323 Modenese cattle, were compared. Average inbreeding values per year were used to calculate effective population size. Reggiana breed had generally lower genomic inbreeding values than Modenese breed. The low correlation between pedigree-based and genomic-based parameters (ranging from 0.187 to 0.195 and 0.319 to 0.323 in the Reggiana and Modenese breeds, respectively) reflected the common problems of local populations in which pedigree records are not complete. The high proportion of short ROH over the total number of ROH indicates no major recent inbreeding events in both breeds. ROH islands spread over the genome of the 2 breeds (15 in Reggiana and 14 in Modenese) identified several signatures of selection. Some of these included genes affecting milk production traits, stature, body conformation traits (with a main ROH island in both breeds on BTA6 containing the ABCG2, NCAPG, and LCORL genes) and coat color (on BTA13 in Modenese containing the ASIP gene). In conclusion, this work provides an extensive comparative analysis of pedigree and genomic inbreeding parameters and relevant genomic information that will be useful in the conservation strategies of these 2 iconic local cattle breeds
