In-medium broadening of nucleon resonances
We analyze the effects of an in-medium broadening of nucleon resonances on
the exclusive photoproduction of mesons on nuclei as well as on the total
photoabsorption cross sections in a transport calculation. We show that the
resonance widths observed in semi-inclusive photoproduction on nuclei are
insensitive to an in-medium broadening of nucleon resonances. This is due to a
simple effect: the sizeable width of the nuclear surface and Fermi motion.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, minor changes in the tex
Laser pulse analysis
Methods are presented for locating threshold points by using laser pulse analysis. It was found that there are errors involved in the determination of each of these quantities, and an attempt was made to separate their effects on the overall range correction. Several series of corrected range measurements for fixed reflectors and satellites were obtained. Residuals were computed by fitting the range measurements to either fixed-reflector distances or short arcs of satellite orbits. Root mean square values of these residuals are presented
Photoproduction of pi0-mesons from nuclei
Photoproduction of neutral pions from nuclei (carbon, calcium, niobium, lead)
has been studied for incident photon energies from 200 MeV to 800 MeV with the
TAPS detector using the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer at the Mainz MAMI
accelerator. Data were obtained for the inclusive photoproduction of neutral
pions and the partial channels of quasifree single pi0, double pi0, and
pi0pi+/- photoproduction. They have been analyzed in terms of the in-medium
behavior of nucleon resonances and the pion - nucleus interaction. They are
compared to earlier measurements from the deuteron and to the predictions of a
Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) transport model for photon induced pion

The value of 'dialogue events' as sites of learning: an exploration of research & evaluation frameworks
In this article, we draw from our experiences as UK and US-based 'dialogue event' practitioners and researchers/ evaluators to suggest that these existing evaluative criteria are insufficient to explore the role and value of ISI-based 'dialogue events'. Instead, we suggest that it may be productive to research and evaluate these ISI-based 'dialogue events' as sites of learning. Secondly, however, we show through a discussion of our own research frameworks that understanding these 'dialogue events' as sites of learning does not intuitively provide a framework for understanding what counts as success for these efforts. Instead, research on the role of 'dialogue' within the educational literature – and the connections between 'dialogue' and competing understandings of the nature of science and society – offers a multiplicity of approaches to defining the terms and goals of these events. Finally, we identify two broader implications of researching and evaluating these 'dialogue events' as sites of learning for ISIs and all efforts to increase public engagement with science and technology
Spectral Function of Quarks in Quark Matter
We investigate the spectral function of light quarks in infinite quark matter
using a simple, albeit self-consistent model. The interactions between the
quarks are described by the SU(2) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. Currently mean
field effects are neglected and all calculations are performed in the chirally
restored phase at zero temperature. Relations between correlation functions and
collision rates are used to calculate the spectral function in an iterative
