Amorphous Phase Properties Of Oriented Polyethylene Solids

    Get PDF
Solid-state deformation of polyethylene results in a preferential orientation of both crystalline and amorphous regions. Usually, one major problem in the prediction of the mechanical and thermal expansion properties of anisotropic polyethylene lies in determining values for the amorphous phase properties and, particularly, at a given level of solid-state deformation. This paper outlines simple procedures for determining the two-dimensional amorphous orientation function and values for the mechanical and thermal expansion properties of the oriented amorphous phase. Mathematical expressions for determining the tensile and shear moduli, Poisson ratio and thermal strain of the amorphous phase for anisotropic polyethylene at any level of orientation are defined. Comparison between the predicted amorphous phase tensile modulus and the experimental measurements yields an agreement within 30%

    Helac-nlo

Based on the OPP technique and the HELAC framework, HELAC-1LOOP is a program that is capable of numerically evaluating QCD virtual corrections to scattering amplitudes. A detailed presentation of the algorithm is given, along with instructions to run the code and benchmark results. The program is part of the HELAC-NLO framework that allows for a complete evaluation of QCD NLO corrections.Comment: minor text revisions, version to appear in Comput.Phys.Commu

Standard Model Higgs boson production in association with a top anti-top pair at NLO with parton showering

We present predictions for the production cross section of a Standard Model Higgs boson in association with a top-antitop pair at next-to-leading order accuracy using matrix elements obtained from the HELAC-Oneloop package. The NLO prediction was interfaced to the PYTHIA and HERWIG shower Monte Carlo programs with the help of POWHEG-Box, allowing for decays of massive particles, showering and hadronization, thus leading to final results at the hadron level.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure

GoSam: A program for automated one-loop Calculations

The program package GoSam is presented which aims at the automated calculation of one-loop amplitudes for multi-particle processes. The amplitudes are generated in terms of Feynman diagrams and can be reduced using either D-dimensional integrand-level decomposition or tensor reduction, or a combination of both. GoSam can be used to calculate one-loop corrections to both QCD and electroweak theory, and model files for theories Beyond the Standard Model can be linked as well. A standard interface to programs calculating real radiation is also included. The flexibility of the program is demonstrated by various examples.Comment: 10 pages, Talk given at the International Workshop on Advanced Computing and Analysis Techniques in Physics Research (ACAT), Uxbridge, London, September 201

Impact of the Conformational Variability of Oligopeptides on the Computational Prediction of Their CD Spectra

Although successful in the structural determination of ordered biomolecules, the spectroscopic investigation of oligopeptides in solution is hindered by their complex and rapidly changing conformational ensemble. The measured circular dichroism (CD) spectrum of an oligopeptide is an ensemble average over all microstates, severely limiting its interpretation, in contrast to ordered biomolecules. Spectral deconvolution methods to estimate the secondary structure contributions in the ensemble are still mostly based on databases of larger ordered proteins. Here, we establish how the interpretation of CD spectra of oligopeptides can be enhanced by the ability to compute the same observable from a set of atomic coordinates. Focusing on two representative oligopeptides featuring a known propensity toward an α-helical and β-hairpin motif, respectively, we compare and cross-validate the structural information coming from deconvolution of the experimental CD spectra, sequence-based de novo structure prediction, and molecular dynamics simulations based on enhanced sampling methods. We find that small conformational variations can give rise to significant changes in the CD signals. While for the simpler conformational landscape of the α-helical peptide de novo structure prediction can already give reasonabl

Opposite prognostic roles of HIF1alpha and HIF2alpha expressions in bone metastatic clear cell renal cell cancer

BACKGROUND: Prognostic markers of bone metastatic clear cell renal cell cancer (ccRCC) are poorly established. We tested prognostic value of HIF1alpha/HIF2alpha and their selected target genes in primary tumors and corresponding bone metastases. RESULTS: Expression of HIF2alpha was lower in mRCC both at mRNA and protein levels (p/mRNA/=0.011, p/protein/=0.001) while HIF1alpha was similar to nmRCC. At the protein level, CAIX, GAPDH and GLUT1 were increased in mRCC. In all primary RCCs, low HIF2alpha and high HIF1alpha as well as CAIX, GAPDH and GLUT1 expressions correlated with adverse prognosis, while VEGFR2 and EPOR gene expressions were associated with favorable prognosis. Multivariate analysis confirmed high HIF2alpha protein expression as an independent risk factor. Prognostic validation of HIFs, LDH, EPOR and VEGFR2 in RNA-Seq data confirmed higher HIF1alpha gene expression in primary RCC as an adverse (p=0.07), whereas higher HIF2alpha and VEGFR2 expressions as favorable prognostic factors. HIF1alpha/HIF2alpha-index (HIF-index) proved to be an independent prognostic factor in both the discovery and the TCGA cohort. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Expressions of HIF1alpha and HIF2alpha as well as their 7 target genes were analysed on the mRNA and protein level in 59 non-metastatic ccRCCs (nmRCC), 40 bone metastatic primary ccRCCs (mRCC) and 55 corresponding bone metastases. Results were validated in 399 ccRCCs from the TCGA project. CONCLUSIONS: We identified HIF2alpha protein as an independent marker of the metastatic potential of ccRCC, however, unlike HIF1alpha, increased HIF2alpha expression is a favorable prognostic factor. The HIF-index incorporated these two markers into a strong prognostic biomarker of ccRCC

Real-world performance and accuracy of stress echocardiography: The EVAREST observational multi-centre study

    Get PDF
Aims - Stress echocardiography is widely used to identify obstructive coronary artery disease. High accuracy is reported in expert hands but is dependent on operator training and image quality. The EVAREST study provides UK-wide data to evaluate real-world performance and accuracy of stress echocardiography. Methods and Results - Participants undergoing stress echocardiography for coronary artery disease were recruited from 31 hospitals. Participants were followed up through health records which underwent expert adjudication. Cardiac outcome was defined as anatomically or functionally-significant stenosis on angiography, revascularisation, medical management of ischaemia, acute coronary syndrome or cardiac-related death within six months. 5131 patients (55% male) participated with a median age of 65 years (IQR 57 – 74). 72.9% of studies used dobutamine and 68.5% were contrast studies. Inducible ischaemia was present in 19.3% of scans. Sensitivity and specificity for prediction of a cardiac outcome were 95.4% and 96.0%, respectively, with an accuracy of 95.9%. Sub-group analysis revealed high levels of predictive accuracy across a wide range of patient and protocol sub-groups, with the presence of a resting regional wall motion abnormalitiy significantly reducing the performance of both dobutamine (p<0.01) and exercise (p<0.05) stress echocardiography (p<0.05). Overall accuracy remained consistently high across all participating hospitals. Conclusion – Stress echocardiography has high accuracy across UK-based hospitals and thus indicates stress echocardiography is being delivered effectively in real-world practice, reinforcing its role as a first-line investigation in the assessment of patients with stable chest pain
