Neutron skin of Pb from Coherent Pion Photoproduction
Information on the size and shape of the neutron skin on Pb has been
extracted from coherent pion photoproduction cross sections measured using the
Crystal Ball together with the Glasgow tagger at the MAMI electron beam
facility. On exploitation of an interpolated fit of a theoretical model to the
measured cross sections the half-height radius and diffuseness of the neutron
distribution are found to be 6.70 fm and 0.55 fm respectively, corresponding to a neutron
skin thickness =0.15 fm.
The results give the first successful extraction of a neutron skin with an
electromagnetic probe and indicate the skin of Pb has a halo character.
The measurement provides valuable new constraints on both the structure of
nuclei and the equation of state for neutron-rich matter.Comment: 4 figures 5 pages. Version submitted to journal. Includes additional
studies of systematic effects in the extracted diffuseness, which led to a
small increase in the quoted systematic error. These additional studies are
discussed in the revised manuscript. Also includes minor editorial

Determination of the Dalitz plot parameter alpha for the decay eta->3pi^0 with the Crystal Ball at MAMI-B
A precise measurement of the Dalitz plot parameter, alpha, for the eta->3pi^0
decay is presented. The experiment was performed with the Crystal Ball and TAPS
large acceptance photon detectors at the tagged photon beam facility of the
MAMI-B electron accelerator in Mainz. High statistics of 1.8*10^6 eta->3pi^0
events were obtained, giving the result alpha = -0.032 +/- 0.002(stat) +/-
0.002(syst).Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, published in the online-first section of EPJ A,

Universality, limits and predictability of gold-medal performances at the Olympic Games
Inspired by the Games held in ancient Greece, modern Olympics represent the
world's largest pageant of athletic skill and competitive spirit. Performances
of athletes at the Olympic Games mirror, since 1896, human potentialities in
sports, and thus provide an optimal source of information for studying the
evolution of sport achievements and predicting the limits that athletes can
reach. Unfortunately, the models introduced so far for the description of
athlete performances at the Olympics are either sophisticated or unrealistic,
and more importantly, do not provide a unified theory for sport performances.
Here, we address this issue by showing that relative performance improvements
of medal winners at the Olympics are normally distributed, implying that the
evolution of performance values can be described in good approximation as an
exponential approach to an a priori unknown limiting performance value. This
law holds for all specialties in athletics-including running, jumping, and
throwing-and swimming. We present a self-consistent method, based on normality
hypothesis testing, able to predict limiting performance values in all
specialties. We further quantify the most likely years in which athletes will
breach challenging performance walls in running, jumping, throwing, and
swimming events, as well as the probability that new world records will be
established at the next edition of the Olympic Games.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. Supporting information files and data

Measurements of 12C(→Îł,pp) photon asymmetries for EÎł= 200â450 MeV
The 12C (→γ ,pp) reaction has been studied in the photon energy range 200-450 MeV at the Mainz microtron MAMI-C, where linearly polarised photons were energy-tagged using the Glasgow-Mainz Tagged Photon Spectrometer and protons were detected in the Crystal Ball detector. The photon asymmetry ÎŁ has been measured over a wider EÎł range than previous measurements. The strongest asymmetries were found at low missing energies where direct emission of nucleon pairs is expected. Cuts on the difference in azimuthal angles of the two ejected protons increased the magnitude of the observed asymmetries. At low missing energies the ÎŁ data exhibit a strong angular dependence, similar to deuteron photodisintegration
Active Brownian Particles. From Individual to Collective Stochastic Dynamics
We review theoretical models of individual motility as well as collective
dynamics and pattern formation of active particles. We focus on simple models
of active dynamics with a particular emphasis on nonlinear and stochastic
dynamics of such self-propelled entities in the framework of statistical
mechanics. Examples of such active units in complex physico-chemical and
biological systems are chemically powered nano-rods, localized patterns in
reaction-diffusion system, motile cells or macroscopic animals. Based on the
description of individual motion of point-like active particles by stochastic
differential equations, we discuss different velocity-dependent friction
functions, the impact of various types of fluctuations and calculate
characteristic observables such as stationary velocity distributions or
diffusion coefficients. Finally, we consider not only the free and confined
individual active dynamics but also different types of interaction between
active particles. The resulting collective dynamical behavior of large
assemblies and aggregates of active units is discussed and an overview over
some recent results on spatiotemporal pattern formation in such systems is
given.Comment: 161 pages, Review, Eur Phys J Special-Topics, accepte
Collective animal navigation and migratory culture: From theoretical models to empirical evidence
Animals often travel in groups, and their navigational decisions can be influenced by social interactions. Both theory and empirical observations suggest that such collective navigation can result in individuals improving their ability to find their way and could be one of the key benefits of sociality for these species. Here, we provide an overview of the potential mechanisms underlying collective navigation, review the known, and supposed, empirical evidence for such behaviour and highlight interesting directions for future research. We further explore how both social and collective learning during group navigation could lead to the accumulation of knowledge at the population level, resulting in the emergence of migratory culture
Anomalous behavior of the near-threshold photoionization cross section of the neon isoelectronic sequence: a combined experimental and theoretical study
We present a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of photoionization along the Ne isoelectronic sequence and show that the near-threshold behavior of the cross section for Si4+ differs radically from the nearby ions in the sequence. We demonstrate that the general nature of the underlying physics implies that dramatic changes in near-threshold behavior may be expected for many other ions
Coherent photoproduction of Ï0- and η-mesons off 7Li
Abstract.: Coherent photoproduction of Ï0-mesons from threshold (E th â 136 MeV) throughout the Î-resonance region and of η-mesons close to the production threshold (E th â 570 MeV for η has been measured for 7Li nuclei. The experiment was performed using the tagged-photon beam of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors combined to give an almost 4Ï solid-angle electromagnetic calorimeter. The reactions were identified by a combined invariant-mass and missing-energy analysis. A comparison of the pion data to plane-wave impulse modelling tests the nuclear mass form factor. So far coherent η production had been only identified for the lightest nuclear systems (2H and 3He . For 3He a large enhancement of the cross section above plane-wave approximations had been reported, indicating the formation of a quasi-bound state. The present Li data for η production agree with a plane-wave approximation. Contrary to 3He , neither a threshold enhancement of the total cross section nor a deviation of the angular distributions from the expected form factor dependence were observe
Photoproduction of the meson off the proton near threshold
An experimental study of photoproduction on the proton was conducted
by using the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers together with the
photon tagging facility at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The
differential cross sections are measured from threshold to the incident-photon
energy GeV ( GeV for the center-of-mass energy) with
15-MeV binning in and full production-angle coverage. The quality of
the present data near threshold gives access to a variety of interesting
physics aspects. As an example, an estimation of the scattering
length is provided.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. Published version; some typos were fixe
