Pay Equity and Satisfaction: The Effects of Underpayment and Aspirations with a Review and Implications for Managers
The highest level of satisfaction is thought to be associated with pay equity, while pay inequity, specifically underpayment, results in lower levels of satisfaction and negative outcomes such as increased absences and turnover. Determining whether an employee\u27s pay is equitable is difficulty for both managers and researchers. This paper will investigate one method of making this determination and whether pay equity is represented by a pay range. Also investigated is whether an equitably paid employee and an underpaid employee differ as to their satisfaction and aspirations for changes in pay. The results of this study should be of interest to both the manager and researcher
Scaling in Plasticity-Induced Cell-Boundary Microstructure: Fragmentation and Rotational Diffusion
We develop a simple computational model for cell boundary evolution in
plastic deformation. We study the cell boundary size distribution and cell
boundary misorientation distribution that experimentally have been found to
have scaling forms that are largely material independent. The cell division
acts as a source term in the misorientation distribution which significantly
alters the scaling form, giving it a linear slope at small misorientation
angles as observed in the experiments. We compare the results of our simulation
to two closely related exactly solvable models which exhibit scaling behavior
at late times: (i) fragmentation theory and (ii) a random walk in rotation
space with a source term. We find that the scaling exponents in our simulation
agree with those of the theories, and that the scaling collapses obey the same
equations, but that the shape of the scaling functions depend upon the methods
used to measure sizes and to weight averages and histograms

Developing, Evaluating and Scaling Learning Agents in Multi-Agent Environments
The Game Theory & Multi-Agent team at DeepMind studies several aspects of
multi-agent learning ranging from computing approximations to fundamental
concepts in game theory to simulating social dilemmas in rich spatial
environments and training 3-d humanoids in difficult team coordination tasks. A
signature aim of our group is to use the resources and expertise made available
to us at DeepMind in deep reinforcement learning to explore multi-agent systems
in complex environments and use these benchmarks to advance our understanding.
Here, we summarise the recent work of our team and present a taxonomy that we
feel highlights many important open challenges in multi-agent research.Comment: Published in AI Communications 202
Mycobacterium ulcerans disease: experience with primary oral medical therapy in an Australian cohort
Mycobacterium ulcerans (MU) is responsible for disfiguring skin infections which are challenging to treat. The recommended treatment for MU has continued to evolve from surgery to remove all involved tissue, to the use of effective combination oral antibiotics with surgery as required. Our study describes the oral medical treatment utilised for consecutive cases of MU infection over a 15 month period at our institution, in Victoria, Australia. Managing patients primarily with oral antibiotics results in high cure rates and excellent cosmetic outcomes. The success with medical treatment reported in this study will aid those treating cases of MU infection, and will add to the growing body of knowledge about the relative roles of antibiotics and surgery for treating this infection

A novel transport mechanism for MOMP in Chlamydophila pneumoniae and its putative role in immune-therapy
Major outer membrane proteins (MOMPs) of Gram negative bacteria are one of the most intensively studied membrane proteins. MOMPs are essential for maintaining the structural integrity of bacterial outer membranes and in adaptation of parasites to their hosts. There is evidence to suggest a role for purified MOMP from Chlamydophila pneumoniae and corresponding MOMP-derived peptides in immune-modulation, leading to a reduced atherosclerotic phenotype in apoE−/− mice via a characteristic dampening of MHC class II activity. The work reported herein tests this hypothesis by employing a combination of homology modelling and docking to examine the detailed molecular interactions that may be responsible. A three-dimensional homology model of the C. pneumoniae MOMP was constructed based on the 14 transmembrane β-barrel crystal structure of the fatty acid transporter from Escherichia coli, which provides a plausible transport mechanism for MOMP. Ligand docking experiments were used to provide details of the possible molecular interactions driving the binding of MOMP-derived peptides to MHC class II alleles known to be strongly associated with inflammation. The docking experiments were corroborated by predictions from conventional immuno-informatic algorithms. This work supports further the use of MOMP in C. pneumoniae as a possible vaccine target and the role of MOMP-derived peptides as vaccine candidates for immune-therapy in chronic inflammation that can result in cardiovascular events
Alcohol use and extramarital sex among men in Cameroon
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The spread of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa is believed to be driven by unsafe sex, and identification of modifiable risk factors of the latter is needed for comprehensive HIV prevention programming in the region. Some previous studies suggest an association between alcohol abuse and unsafe sexual behaviour, such as multiple concurrent sexual partnerships and inconsistent condom use in sex with non-spousal non-cohabiting partners. However, most of these studies were conducted in developed countries and the few studies in Africa were conducted among well-defined social groups such as men attending beer halls or sexually transmitted infection clinics. We therefore examined the association between alcohol and extramarital sex (a sign of multiple concurrent sexual partnerships) among men in a population-based survey in Cameroon; a low-income country in sub-Saharan Africa with a high rate of alcohol abuse and a generalised HIV epidemic.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We analyzed data from 2678 formally married or cohabiting men aged 15 to 59 years, who participated in the 2004 Cameroon Demographic and Health Survey, using a multivariate regression model.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A quarter of the men (25.8%) declared having taken alcohol before their last sexual intercourse and 21% indicated that the last sex was with a woman other than their wife or cohabiting partner. After controlling for possible confounding by other socio-demographic characteristics, alcohol use was significantly associated with having extramarital sex: adjusted odds ratio (OR) 1.70, 95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.40 to 2.05. Older age (30–44 years: OR 3.06, 95%CI 2.16–4.27 and 45–59 years: OR 4.10, 95%CI 2.16–4.27), higher education (OR 1.25, 95%CI 1.10–1.45), and wealth (OR 1.71, 95%CI 1.50–1.98) were also significantly associated with higher odds of having extramarital sex. The men were more likely to have used a condom in their last sex if it was extramarital (OR 10.50, 95%CI 8.10–13.66). Older age at first sex (16–19 years: OR 0.81, 95%CI 0.72–0.90 and > 19 years: OR 0.74, 95% CI 0.65–0.87) and being the head of a household (OR 0.17, 95%CI 0.14–0.22) significantly decreased the odds of having sex outside of marriage. Religion and place of residence (whether urban or rural) were not significantly associated with extramarital sex.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Alcohol use is associated with having multiple concurrent non-spousal sexual partnerships among married men in Cameroon. We cannot infer a causal relationship between alcohol abuse and unsafe sex from this cross-sectional study, as both alcohol use and unsafe sexual behaviour may have a common set of causal personal and social factors. However, given the consistency with results of studies in other settings and the biologic plausibility of the link between alcohol intake and unsafe sex, our findings underscore the need for integrating alcohol abuse and HIV prevention efforts in Cameroon and other African countries with similar social profiles.</p
Supporting Spartina: Interdisciplinary perspective shows Spartina as a distinct solid genus
In 2014 a DNA-based phylogenetic study confirming the paraphyly of the grass subtribe Sporobolinae proposed the creation of a large monophyletic genus Sporobolus, including (among others) species previously included in the genera Spartina, Calamovilfa, and Sporobolus. Spartina species have contributed substantially (and continue contributing) to our knowledge in multiple disciplines, including ecology, evolutionary biology, molecular biology, biogeography, experimental ecology, environmental management, restoration ecology, history, economics, and sociology. There is no rationale so compelling to subsume the name Spartina as a subgenus that could rival the striking, global iconic history and use of the name Spartina for over 200 years. We do not agree with the arguments underlying the proposal to change Spartina to Sporobolus. We understand the importance of taxonomy and of formalized nomenclature and hope that by opening this debate we will encourage positive feedback that will strengthen taxonomic decisions with an interdisciplinary perspective. We consider the strongly distinct, monophyletic clade Spartina should simply and efficiently be treated as the genus Spartina
