    UV chromospheric and circumstellar diagnostic features among F supergiant stars

    A survey of F supergiant stars to evaluate the extension of chromospheric and circumstellar characteristics commonly observed in the slightly cooler G, K, and M supergiant is discussed. An ultraviolet survey was elected since UV features of Mg II and Fe II might persist in revealing outer atmosphere phenomena even among F supergiants. The encompassed spectral types F0 to G0, and luminosity classes Ib, Ia, and Ia-0. In addition, the usefulness of the emission line width-to-luminosity correlation for the G-M stars in both the Ca II and Mg II lines is examined

    Groundwater compartmentalisation: a water table height and geochemical analysis of the structural controls on the subdivision of a major aquifer, the Sherwood Sandstone, Merseyside, UK

    International audienceCompartmentalisation, the subdivision of an aquifer into discrete and relatively isolated units, may be of critical importance for the protection of groundwater although it has been largely ignored in the groundwater literature. The Lower Triassic Sherwood Sandstone, in north west of England, UK, may be a good example of an aquifer that has been compartmentalised by numerous high angle faults with displacements of up to 300 m. The study was initiated to assess the local groundwater flow, the extent of seawater invasion and the controls on recharge in the aquifer and to try to understand whether the aquifer is broken into discrete compartments. Maps and schematic cross-sections of groundwater heads for the years 1993, and 2002 were prepared to trace any structural controls on the groundwater heads across the area. Studying the contour maps and cross sections revealed that: 1) there are substantial differences in groundwater head across some of the NNW-SSE trending faults implying that groundwater flow is strongly limited by faults, 2) an anticline in the east of the area acts as a groundwater divide and 3) the groundwater head seems to follow the topography in some places, although steep changes in groundwater head occur across faults showing that they locally control the groundwater head. The aquifer was thus provisionally subdivided into several hydrogeological sub-basins based on groundwater head patterns and the occurrence of major structural features (faults and a fold). Using groundwater geochemistry data, contour maps of chloride and sulphate concentration largely support the structural sub-division of the area into hydrogeological sub-basins. Scrutiny of groundwater geochemical data, averaged for each sub-basin, confirmed the degree of compartmentalisation and the occurrence of sealed faults. The variation of the geochemical composition of the groundwater not only relates to the different, localised geochemical processes and seawater intrusion but also relates to compartmentalisation due to faulting. Faults have limited the degree of mixing between the groundwater types thus retaining the specific characteristics of each sub-basin. Highly localised seawater intrusion is mainly controlled by low permeability fault close to the Irish Sea and Mersey estuary. There is effectively no invasion of seawater beyond the faults that lie closest to the coastline. Freshwater recharge to the aquifer seems to be highly localised and mainly occurs by vertical percolation of rain and surface water rather than whole aquifer-scale groundwater flow. This study provides a detailed understanding of the groundwater flow processes in Liverpool as an example of methods can be applied to groundwater management elsewhere

The study area is located in the northwest of England and encompasses the urban area of Liverpool and surrounding countryside and extends east-west from Liverpool to Widnes and as far north as Formby. The Irish Sea marks the western margin of the area while the Mersey estuary defines the southern margin. The Triassic sandstone in this area has been, and remains, an important aquifer although industrialisation and groundwater exploitation have led to significant water quality problems. Maps of water table for the years 1993, 1997, 2000 and 2002 and schematic cross-sections of the water table height along the faults were prepared to trace any effect of these faults on water table height across.     International audienceGroundwater in the Triassic Sherwood Sandstone aquifer, Liverpool, UK, has locally elevated chloride concentrations (~4000 mg/l) in parts of the coastal region although there is freshwater right up to the coast line in other areas. The aquifer is cut my numerous faults with vertical displacements of as much 300 m. SPOT satellite data have been used for the Merseyside area of Liverpool. The satellite data revealed and confirmed the location of some of the main faults since the fault zones of the aquifer have low permeability (due to grain crushing, cataclasis, and clay smearing). Where fault zones outcrop at the surface, below the well-developed regolith, there is locally elevated soil water and thus anomalous vegetation patterns in comparison to unfaulted and highly porous aquifer. The ability to identify fault zones by this satellite-based method strongly suggests that they are at least partially sealing, sub-vertical features in the aquifer. Digitally enhanced and processed satellite data were used to define the relative proportions of sand and clay in the near-coastal (inter-tidal) part of the Mersey estuary. Sand-dominated sediment has higher pixel values in comparison with clay deposits in the near infrared spectral region (NIR). Where open and weathered fault rocks crop out at the surface near the intertidal zone, water movement in these potential surface water conduits is limited where the intertidal zone is clay-dominated since clay will plug the conduit. Where these weathered and open fault-rocks crop out against sand-dominated parts of the coastline, fresh water outflux into the seawater has been imaged using the satellite data. Furthermore, the high and low chloride concentration parts of the aquifer are separated by major, sub-vertical fault zones and have allowed a very steep water table gradient to remain in the aquifer

    On digital twins, mirrors and virtualisations

    A powerful new idea in the computational representation of structures is that of the digital twin. The concept of the digital twin emerged and developed over the last two decades, and has been identified by many industries as a highly-desired technology. The current situation is that individual companies often have their own definitions of a digital twin, and no clear consensus has emerged. In particular, there is no current mathematical formulation of a digital twin. A companion paper to the current one will attempt to present the essential components of the desired formulation. One of those components is identified as a rigorous representation theory of models, how they are validated, and how validation information can be transferred between models. The current paper will outline the basic ingredients of such a theory, based on the introduction of two new concepts: mirrors and virtualisations. The paper is not intended as a passive wish-list; it is intended as a rallying call. The new theory will require the active participation of researchers across a number of domains including: pure and applied mathematics, physics, computer science and engineering. The paper outlines the main objects of the theory and gives examples of the sort of theorems and hypotheses that might be proved in the new framework

    Full-scale testing and analysis of fuselage structure

    This paper presents recent results from a program in the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group to study the behavior of cracks in fuselage structures. The goal of this program is to improve methods for analyzing crack growth and residual strength in pressurized fuselages, thus improving new airplane designs and optimizing the required structural inspections for current models. The program consists of full-scale experimental testing of pressurized fuselage panels in both wide-body and narrow-body fixtures and finite element analyses to predict the results. The finite element analyses are geometrically nonlinear with material and fastener nonlinearity included on a case-by-case basis. The analysis results are compared with the strain gage, crack growth, and residual strength data from the experimental program. Most of the studies reported in this paper concern the behavior of single or multiple cracks in the lap joints of narrow-body airplanes (such as 727 and 737 commercial jets). The phenomenon where the crack trajectory is curved creating a 'flap' and resulting in a controlled decompression is discussed

    Outlier ensembles: A robust method for damage detection and unsupervised feature extraction from high-dimensional data

    Outlier ensembles are shown to provide a robust method for damage detection and dimension reduction via a wholly unsupervised framework. Most interestingly, when utilised for feature extraction, the proposed heuristic defines features that enable near-equivalent classification performance (95.85%) when compared to the features found (in previous work) through supervised techniques (97.39%) — specifically, a genetic algorithm. This is significant for practical applications of structural health monitoring, where labelled data are rarely available during data mining. Ensemble analysis is applied to practical examples of problematic engineering data; two case studies are presented in this work. Case study I illustrates how outlier ensembles can be used to expose outliers hidden within a dataset. Case study II demonstrates how ensembles can be utilised as a tool for robust outlier analysis and feature extraction in a noisy, high-dimensional feature-space

    Applicability of a Markov-chain Monte Carlo method for damage detection on data from the Z-24 and Tamar suspension bridges

    In the Structural Health Monitoring of bridges, the effects of the operational and environmental variability on the structural responses have posed several challenges for early damage detection. In order to overcome those challenges, in the last decade recourse has been made to the statistical pattern recognition paradigm based on vibration data from long-term monitoring. The use of purely data-based algorithms that do not depend on the physical descriptions of the structures have characterized this paradigm. However, one drawback of this procedure is how to set up the baseline condition for new and existing bridges. Therefore, this paper proposes an algorithm with a Bayesian approach based on a Markov-chain Monte Carlo method to cluster structural responses of the bridges into a reduced number of global state conditions, by taking into account eventual multimodality and heterogeneity of the data distribution. This approach, along with the Mahalanobis squared-distance, permits one to form an algorithm able to detect structural damage based on daily response data even under abnormal events caused by operational and environmental variability. The applicability of this approach is first demonstrated on standard data sets from the Z-24 Bridge, Switzerland. Afterwards, for generalization purposes, it is applied on datasets from a supposed undamaged bridge condition, namely the Tamar Bridge, England. The analysis suggests that this algorithm might be useful for bridge applications, because it permits one to overcome some of the limitations posed by the pattern recognition paradigm, especially when dealing with limited amounts of training data.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    The Effects of Negative Legacies on the Adjustment of Parentally Bereaved Children and Adolescents

    This is a report of a qualitative analysis of a sample of bereaved families in which one parent died and in which children scored in the clinical range on the Child Behavior Check List. The purpose of this analysis was to learn more about the lives of these children. They were considered to be at risk of developing emotional and behavioral problems associated with the death. We discovered that many of these “high risk” children had a continuing bond with the deceased that was primarily negative and troubling for them in contrast to a comparison group of children not at risk from the same study. Five types of legacies, not mutually exclusive, were identified: health related, role related, personal qualities, legacy of blame, and an emotional legacy. Coping behavior on the part of the surviving parent seemed to make a difference in whether or not a legacy was experienced as negative
