The radial velocities of the RS CVn star UX Ari. A triple system with a binary on the same line of sight

UX Ari belongs to the class of very active RS CVn stars and has recently been the target of surface (Doppler) imaging. Although this technique needs a quite accurate determination of the orbit (in order to have the correct period for phasing and the correct Doppler shift correction of the line profiles) we found only one, quite old orbit solution, which has subsequently been used by everyone. We used published radial velocities (RVs), supplemented by a large number (124) of our own recent, high-accuracy RVs of both the primary (K0 IV) and the secondary (G5 V) to improve the orbit of UX Ari. In addition to the improved set of parameters, we found that the gamma velocity of the system is systematically changing over time. It seems that UX Ari is a triple system. Actually, a third star is weakly present in the spectrum. While its RV is also changing, it is not a member of the system, but happens to be on the same line of sight. Finally, conclusions about the physical parameters of the objects from the orbits are presented.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures; uses the new A&A style file (included); table 2 is included in the LaTeX-file, but commented out; it is not printed and will be available from CDS; accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysic

Germline Transgenic Methods for Tracking Cells and Testing Gene Function During Regeneration in the Axolotl

The salamander is the only tetrapod that regenerates complex body structures throughout life. Deciphering the underlying molecular processes of regeneration is fundamental for regenerative medicine and developmental biology, but the model organism had limited tools for molecular analysis. We describe a comprehensive set of germline transgenic strains in the laboratory-bred salamander Ambystoma mexicanum(axolotl) that open up the cellular and molecular genetic dissection of regeneration. We demonstrate tissue-dependent control of gene expression in nerve, Schwann cells, oligodendrocytes, muscle, epidermis, and cartilage. Furthermore, we demonstrate the use of tamoxifen-induced Cre/loxP-mediated recombination to indelibly mark different cell types. Finally, we inducibly overexpress the cell-cycle inhibitor p16INK4a, which negatively regulates spinal cord regeneration. These tissue-specific germline axolotl lines and tightly inducible Cre drivers and LoxP reporter lines render this classical regeneration model molecularly accessible

    High-Resolution Spectroscopy of FUors

High-resolution spectroscopy was obtained of the FUors FU Ori and V1057 Cyg between 1995 and 2002 with SOFIN at NOT and with HIRES at Keck I. During those years FU Ori remained about 1 mag. (in B) below its 1938-39 maximum brightness, but V1057 Cyg (B ~ 10.5 at peak in 1970-71) faded from about 13.5 to 14.9 and then recovered slightly. Their photospheric spectra resemble a rotating G0 Ib supergiant, with v_eq sin i = 70 km/s for FU Ori and 55 km/s for V1057 Cyg. As V1057 Cyg faded, P Cyg structure in Halpha and the IR CaII lines strengthened and a complex shortward-displaced shell spectrum increased in strength, disappeared in 1999, and reappeared in 2001. Night-to-night changes in the wind structure of FU Ori show evidence of sporadic infall. The strength of P Cyg absorption varied cyclically with a period of 14.8 days, with phase stability maintained over 3 seasons, and is believed to be the rotation period. The structure of the photospheric lines also varies cyclically, but with a period of 3.54 days. A similar variation may be present in V1057 Cyg. As V1057 Cyg has faded, the emission lines of a pre-existing low-excitation chromosphere have emerged, so we believe the `line doubling' in V1057 Cyg is produced by these central emission cores in the absorption lines, not by orbital motion in an inclined Keplerian disk. No dependence of v_eq sin i on wavelength or excitation potential was detected in either star, again contrary to expectation for a self-luminous accretion disk. Nor are critical lines in the near infrared accounted for by synthetic disk spectra. A rapidly rotating star near the edge of stability (Larson 1980), can better explain these observations. FUor eruptions may not be a property of ordinary TTS, but may be confined to a special subspecies of rapid rotators having powerful quasi-permanent winds.Comment: 41 pages (including 32 figures and 9 tables); ApJ, in press; author affiliation, figs. 3 and 9 correcte

Non-axisymmetric accretion on the classical TTS RW Aur A

(Abridged) High-resolution spectroscopic monitoring of RW Aur A was carried out in 1996, 1998 and 1999 with simultaneous B, V photometry. A multicomponent spectrum is revealed with a veiled photospheric spectrum, broad emissions, narrow emission lines of helium, and accretion, wind and shell features. Periodic modulations in many spectral features were found. The photospheric absorption lines show sinusoidal variations in radial velocity with an amplitude of +-6 km/s and a period of about 2.77 days. The radial velocities of the narrow emission lines of He vary with the same period but in anti-phase to the photospheric lines. The equivalent widths of the narrow emissions vary with a phase-shift with respect to the velocity curve. The strength of the red-shifted accretion components of Na D and other lines is also modulated with the same period. The broad emission lines of metals vary mostly with the double period of about 5.5 days. One unexpected result is that no correlation was found between the veiling and the brightness, although both varied in wide ranges. This is partly due to a contribution of the shell absorption to the photospheric line profiles, which make them vary in width and depth thus simulating lower veiling. Most of the observed features can be interpreted in the framework of non-axisymmetric magnetospheric accretion. We consider two possible models. In the first the asymmetry is induced by orbital motion of an invisible, low mass secondary, which also influences the gasflows around the star, the second considers rotational modulation of a single star with an inclined or asymmetric magnetosphere

Resolving Sirius-like binaries with the Hubble Space Telescope

    Get PDF
We have imaged seventeen recently discovered Sirius-like binary systems with HST/WFPC2 and resolved the white dwarf secondary in eight cases. Most of the implied orbital periods are of order several hundred years, but in three cases (56 Per, Zeta Cygni and REJ1925-566) the periods are short enough that it may be possible to detect orbital motion within a few years. It will then be possible to derive dynamically determined masses for the white dwarfs, and potentially these stars could be used as stringent tests of the mass-radius relation and initial-final mass relation.Comment: To appear in Proceedings of the 12th European Workshop on White Dwarfs, eds. On Temperature and Abundance Effects During an X-Ray Flare on Sigma Geminorum

We compare quiescent and flare X-ray spectra of the RS CVn binary Sigma Gem obtained with the Chandra and XMM-Newton grating spectrometers. We find that in addition to an overall 25% flux increase, which can be ascribed to variations in the system's quiescence activity over the 15 months that passed between the observations, there is a hot plasma component of kT_e > 3 keV that arises with the flare. The hot component is manifested primarily by emission from high charge states of Fe and by a vast continuum. The cooler (kT_e < 2 keV) plasma remains undisturbed during the flare. We find no significant variations in the relative abundances during the flare except for a slight decrease (<30%) of O and Ne.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in A&

"Kultur" als Form symbolischer Gewalt: Grenzziehungsprozesse im Kontext von Migration am Beispiel der Schweiz

    Get PDF

Doppler images of the eclipsing binary ER Vulpeculae

    Get PDF
We present Doppler images of both components of the eclipsing binary system ER Vul, based on the spectra obtained in 2004 November, 2006 September and 2008 November. The least-squares deconvolution technique is used for enhancing the signal-to-noise ratios of the observed profiles. The new surface images reveal that both stars of ER Vul show strong starspot activities and the starspots appear at various latitudes. The surface maps of 2006 and 2008 both show the presence of large high-latitude starspots on each component of ER Vul. We find no obvious phase shift of the active regions during our observations. The longitude distributions of starspots are non-uniform on both stars. At low-to-mid latitudes, the active regions are almost exclusively found in the hemisphere facing the other star. However, we find no pronounced concentration of spots at the sub-stellar points.Peer reviewe
