Can language models learn analogical reasoning? Investigating training objectives and comparisons to human performance
While analogies are a common way to evaluate word embeddings in NLP, it is
also of interest to investigate whether or not analogical reasoning is a task
in itself that can be learned. In this paper, we test several ways to learn
basic analogical reasoning, specifically focusing on analogies that are more
typical of what is used to evaluate analogical reasoning in humans than those
in commonly used NLP benchmarks. Our experiments find that models are able to
learn analogical reasoning, even with a small amount of data. We additionally
compare our models to a dataset with a human baseline, and find that after
training, models approach human performance
Evaluation of scalarization methods and NSGA-II/SPEA2 genetic algorithms for multi-objective optimization of green supply chain design
This paper considers supply chain design in green logistics. We formulate the choice of an environmentally conscious chain design as a multi-objective optimization (MOO) problem and approximate the Pareto front using the weighted sum and epsilon constraint scalarization methods as well as with two popular genetic algorithms, NSGA-II and SPEA2. We extend an existing case study of green supply chain design in the South Eastern Europe region by optimizing simultaneously costs, CO2 and fine dust (also known as PM - Particulate Matters) emissions. The results show that in the considered case the scalarization methods outperform genetic algorithms in finding efficient solutions and that the CO2 and PM emissions can be lowered by accepting a marginal increase of costs over their global minimum
How is participation related to well-being of homeless people?:An explorative qualitative study in a Dutch homeless shelter facility
The majority of homeless people is socially excluded which negatively affects their well-being. Therefore, participation-based programs are needed. The current research is conducted within a Dutch homeless shelter facility that offers educational, recreational, and labor activities to clients in an environment which is designed to feel safe (an enabling niche). The main aim of these activities is to facilitate social participation. We conducted two qualitative studies consisting of 16 semi-structured interviews, to explore clients’ experiences with participation in activities in relation to their well-being. The findings showed that clients experienced that participation had led to an improvement of physical, social, and mental well-being. In general, clients reported that due to participation in activities they have strengthened their social support network, improved their (mental and physical) health, self-esteem and personal growth. We concluded that in order to facilitate long-term positive outcomes of participation in practice, it is necessary to focus on group cohesion, and on the social worker’s behavior and attitud
Functional traits of trees on and off termite mounds:Understanding the origin of biotically-driven heterogeneity in savannas
Questions In African savannas, Macrotermes termites contribute to small-scale heterogeneity by constructing large mounds. Operating as islands of high nutrient and water availability and low fire frequency, these mounds support distinct, diverse communities of trees that have been shown to be highly attractive to browsers. However, the distinct traits of tree species on termite mounds have hardly been studied, even though this may help to understand processes determining (1) their characteristic community structure and (2) attractiveness for browsers. Here, we compare functional trait and browser preference values between tree species on and off termite mounds. Location Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. Methods We recorded tree community compositions for 16 large Macrotermes natalensis mounds and 16 control plots of 100 m2 each in a paired design. For each observed tree species we measured 22 traits, related to water and nutrient use, fire tolerance, light competition and anti-herbivore defence, and compared average trait values between mound and control communities. Furthermore, we investigated the feeding preferences of ungulate browsers for the most common tree species and how this was linked to their associated traits. Results Termite mounds supported tree communities that were distinct from the surrounding savanna vegetation. Mounds hosted more evergreen and less leguminous tree species than control communities, and the dominant species were less mechanically defended, less nutritious, had larger leaves and lower wood density than the species dominating control plots. Browsers preferred leguminous tree species with high leaf N and P content, which were relatively rare on termite mounds. Conclusions Overall, we conclude that termite mounds in this savanna form small refuges for tree species that seem less adapted to fire (more evergreens), have low nutrient availability (less nitrogen fixers) and suffer from water stress (larger leaf sizes) than typical savanna trees. Surprisingly, despite their reputation as browsing hotspots, the tree species dominating mounds are less nutritious and less preferred by browsers than tree species of the surrounding savanna, which may be explained by the relatively nutrient-rich nature of this savanna or intraspecific trait differences
An Inner Gaseous Disk around the Herbig Be Star MWC 147
We present high-spectral-resolution, optical spectra of the Herbig Be star
MWC 147, in which we spectrally resolve several emission lines, including the
[O I] lines at 6300 and 6363\deg. Their highly symmetric, double-peaked line
profiles indicate that the emission originates in a rotating circumstellar
disk. We deconvolve the Doppler-broadened [O I] emission lines to obtain a
measure of emission as a function of distance from the central star. The
resulting radial surface brightness profiles are in agreement with a disk
structure consisting of a flat, inner, gaseous disk and a flared, outer, dust
disk. The transition between these components at 2 to 3 AU corresponds to the
estimated dust sublimation radius. The width of the double-peaked Mg II line at
4481\deg suggests that the inner disk extends to at least 0.10 AU, close to the

Observability of Forming Planets and their Circumplanetary Disks I. -- Parameter Study for ALMA
We present mock observations of forming planets with ALMA. The possible
detections of circumplanetary disks (CPDs) were investigated around planets of
Saturn, 1, 3, 5, and 10 Jupiter-masses that are placed at 5.2 AU from their
star. The radiative, three dimensional hydrodynamic simulations were then
post-processed with RADMC3D and the ALMA Observation Simulator. We found that
even though the CPDs are too small to be resolved, they are hot due to the
accreting planet in the optically thick limit, therefore the best chance to
detect them with continuum observations in this case is at the shortest ALMA
wavelengths, such as Band 9 (440 microns). Similar fluxes were found in the
case of Saturn and Jupiter-mass planets, as for the 10
gas-giant, due to temperature weighted optical depth effects: when no deep gap
is carved, the planet region is blanketed by the optically thick circumstellar
disk leading to a less efficient cooling there. A test was made for a 52 AU
orbital separation, showed that optically thin CPDs are also detectable in band
7 but they need longer integration times (5hrs). Comparing the gap profiles
of the same simulation at various ALMA bands and the hydro simulation confirmed
that they change significantly, first because the gap is wider at longer
wavelengths due to decreasing optical depth; second, the beam convolution makes
the gap shallower and at least 25% narrower. Therefore, caution has to be made
when estimating planet masses based on ALMA continuum observations of gaps.Comment: Accepted for publication at MNRAS. Typos are corrected since previous

CO ro-vibrational lines in HD100546: A search for disc asymmetries and the role of fluorescence
We have studied the emission of CO ro-vibrational lines in the disc around
the Herbig Be star HD100546 with the final goal of using these lines as a
diagnostic to understand inner disc structure in the context of planet
formation. High-resolution IR spectra of CO ro-vibrational emission at eight
different position angles were taken with CRIRES at the VLT. From these spectra
flux tables, CO ro-vibrational line profiles, and population diagrams were
produced. We have investigated variations in the line profile shapes and line
strengths as a function of slit position angle. We used the thermochemical disc
modelling code ProDiMo based on the chemistry, radiation field, and temperature
structure of a previously published model for HD100546. Comparing observations
and the model, we investigated the possibility of disc asymmetries, the
excitation mechanism (UV fluorescence), the geometry, and physical conditions
of the inner disc. The observed CO ro-vibrational lines are largely emitted
from the inner rim of the outer disc at 10-13 AU. The line shapes are similar
for all v levels and line fluxes from all vibrational levels vary only within
one order of magnitude. All line profile asymmetries and variations can be
explained with a symmetric disc model to which a slit correction and pointing
offset is applied. Because the angular size of the CO emitting region (10-13
AU) and the slit width are comparable the line profiles are very sensitive to
the placing of the slit. The model reproduces the line shapes and the fluxes of
the v=1-0 lines as well as the spatial extent of the CO ro-vibrational
emission. It does not reproduce the observed band ratios of 0.5-0.2 with higher
vibrational bands. We find that lower gas volume densities at the surface of
the inner rim of the outer disc can make the fluorescence pumping more effcient
and reproduce the observed band ratios.Comment: 20 pages, 21 figure
An upper limit on the mass of the circumplanetary disk for DH Tau b
DH Tau is a young (1 Myr) classical T Tauri star. It is one of the few
young PMS stars known to be associated with a planetary mass companion, DH Tau
b, orbiting at large separation and detected by direct imaging. DH Tau b is
thought to be accreting based on copious H emission and exhibits
variable Paschen Beta emission. NOEMA observations at 230 GHz allow us to place
constraints on the disk dust mass for both DH Tau b and the primary in a regime
where the disks will appear optically thin. We estimate a disk dust mass for
the primary, DH Tau A of , which gives a disk-to-star
mass ratio of 0.014 (assuming the usual Gas-to-Dust mass ratio of 100 in the
disk). We find a conservative disk dust mass upper limit of 0.42
for DH Tau b, assuming that the disk temperature is dominated by irradiation
from DH Tau b itself. Given the environment of the circumplanetary disk,
variable illumination from the primary or the equilibrium temperature of the
surrounding cloud would lead to even lower disk mass estimates. A MCFOST
radiative transfer model including heating of the circumplanetary disk by DH
Tau b and DH Tau A suggests that a mass averaged disk temperature of 22 K is
more realistic, resulting in a dust disk mass upper limit of 0.09
for DH Tau b. We place DH Tau b in context with similar objects and discuss the
consequences for planet formation models.Comment: accepted for publication in A
The narrow, inner CO ring around the magnetic Herbig Ae star, HD 101412
We describe and model emission lines in the first overtone band of CO in the
magnetic Herbig Ae star HD 101412. High-resolution CRIRES spectra reveal
unusually sharp features which suggest the emission is formed in a thin disk
centered at 1 AU with a width 0.32 AU or less. A wider disk will not fit the
observations. Previous observations have reached similar conclusions, but the
