The Timing Counter of the MEG experiment: calibration and performance
The MEG detector is designed to test Lepton Flavor Violation in the
decay down to a Branching Ratio of a few
. The decay topology consists in the coincident emission of a
monochromatic photon in direction opposite to a monochromatic positron. A
precise measurement of the relative time is crucial to suppress
the background. The Timing Counter (TC) is designed to precisely measure the
time of arrival of the and to provide information to the trigger system.
It consists of two sectors up and down stream the decay target, each consisting
of two layers. The outer one made of scintillating bars and the inner one of
scintillating fibers. Their design criteria and performances are described.Comment: Presented at the 12th Topical Seminar on Innovative Particle and

How to quantify energy landscapes of solids
We explore whether the topology of energy landscapes in chemical systems
obeys any rules and what these rules are. To answer this and related questions
we use several tools: (i)Reduced energy surface and its density of states, (ii)
descriptor of structure called fingerprint function, which can be represented
as a one-dimensional function or a vector in abstract multidimensional space,
(iii) definition of a ''distance'' between two structures enabling
quantification of energy landscapes, (iv) definition of a degree of order of a
structure, and (v) definitions of the quasi-entropy quantifying structural
diversity. Our approach can be used for rationalizing large databases of
crystal structures and for tuning computational algorithms for structure
prediction. It enables quantitative and intuitive representations of energy
landscapes and reappraisal of some of the traditional chemical notions and
rules. Our analysis confirms the expectations that low-energy minima are
clustered in compact regions of configuration space ("funnels") and that
chemical systems tend to have very few funnels, sometimes only one. This
analysis can be applied to the physical properties of solids, opening new ways
of discovering structure-property relations. We quantitatively demonstrate that
crystals tend to adopt one of the few simplest structures consistent with their
chemistry, providing a thermodynamic justification of Pauling's fifth rule.Comment: Published in J. Chem. Phys. 130, 104504 (2009
The establishment of Aceratoneuromyia indica (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) in three biogeographical regions of Argentina
Specimens of the eulophid Aceratoneuromyia indica (Silvestri) were recovered from fruit fly pupae collected in three Argentinian biogeographical regions. A total of 11 A. indica specimens was obtained from pupae of the tephritid Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann) in Las Yungas and Paranaense subtropical rain forest regions, and 10 A. indica specimens were recovered from pupae of the tephritid Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) in Chacoan subtropical dry forest region. Thus, A. indica was recovered approximately 38 years after its first release in Argentina.Fil: Ovruski Alderete, Sergio Marcelo.

FPGA based technical solutions for high throughput data processing and encryption for 5G communication: A review
The field programmable gate array (FPGA) devices are ideal solutions for high-speed processing applications, given their flexibility, parallel processing capability, and power efficiency. In this review paper, at first, an overview of the key applications of FPGA-based platforms in 5G networks/systems is presented, exploiting the improved performances offered by such devices. FPGA-based implementations of cloud radio access network (C-RAN) accelerators, network function virtualization (NFV)-based network slicers, cognitive radio systems, and multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channel characterizers are the main considered applications that can benefit from the high processing rate, power efficiency and flexibility of FPGAs. Furthermore, the implementations of encryption/decryption algorithms by employing the Xilinx Zynq Ultrascale+MPSoC ZCU102 FPGA platform are discussed, and then we introduce our high-speed and lightweight implementation of the well-known AES-128 algorithm, developed on the same FPGA platform, and comparing it with similar solutions already published in the literature. The comparison results indicate that our AES-128 implementation enables efficient hardware usage for a given data-rate (up to 28.16 Gbit/s), resulting in higher efficiency (8.64 Mbps/slice) than other considered solutions. Finally, the applications of the ZCU102 platform for high-speed processing are explored, such as image and signal processing, visual recognition, and hardware resource management
Hydrodynamics in 1+1 dimensions with gravitational anomalies
The constraints imposed on hydrodynamics by the structure of gauge and
gravitational anomalies are studied in two dimensions. By explicit integration
of the consistent gravitational anomaly, we derive the equilibrium partition
function at second derivative order. This partition function is then used to
compute the parity-violating part of the covariant energy-momentum tensor and
the transport coefficients.Comment: 9 pages, JHEP format.v2; added comments and references, matching

The host of the Type I SLSN 2017egm: A young, sub-solar metallicity environment in a massive spiral galaxy
Here we present an integral-field study of the massive, high-metallicity
spiral NGC 3191, the host of SN 2017egm, the closest SLSN Type I to date. We
use data from PMAS/CAHA and the public MaNGA survey to shed light on the
properties of the SLSN site and the origin of star-formation in this
non-starburst spiral galaxy. We map the physical properties different
\ion{H}{II} regions throughout the galaxy and characterize their stellar
populations using the STARLIGHT fitting code. Kinematical information allows to
study a possible interaction with its neighbouring galaxy as the origin of
recent star formation activity which could have caused the SLSN. NGC 3191 shows
intense star-formation in the western part with three large SF regions of low
metallicity. The central regions of the host have a higher metallicity, lower
specific star-formation rate and lower ionization. Modeling the stellar
populations gives a different picture: The SLSN region has two dominant stellar
populations with different ages, the youngest one with an age of 2-10 Myr and
lower metallicity, likely the population from which the SN progenitor
originated. Emission line kinematics of NGC 3191 show indications of
interaction with its neighbour MCG+08-19-017 at 45 kpc, which might be
responsible for the recent starburst. In fact, this galaxy pair has in total
hosted 4 SNe, 1988B (Type Ia), SN 2003ds (Type Ic in MCG+08-19-017), PTF10bgl
(SLSN-Type II) and 2017egm, underlying the enhanced SF in both galaxies due to
interaction. Our study shows that one has to be careful interpreting global
host and even gas properties without looking at the stellar population history
of the region. SLSNe seem to still be consistent with massive stars ( 20
M) requiring low () metallicity and those environments
can also occur in massive, late-type galaxies but not necessarily starbursts.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 13 pages, 11 figures, 7 tables.
