Pattern selection in a lattice of pulse-coupled oscillators
We study spatio-temporal pattern formation in a ring of N oscillators with
inhibitory unidirectional pulselike interactions. The attractors of the
dynamics are limit cycles where each oscillator fires once and only once. Since
some of these limit cycles lead to the same pattern, we introduce the concept
of pattern degeneracy to take it into account. Moreover, we give a qualitative
estimation of the volume of the basin of attraction of each pattern by means of
some probabilistic arguments and pattern degeneracy, and show how are they
modified as we change the value of the coupling strength. In the limit of small
coupling, our estimative formula gives a perfect agreement with numerical

Characterization of p38α signaling networks in cancer cells using quantitative proteomics and phosphoproteomics
p38α (encoded by MAPK14) is a protein kinase that regulates cellular responses to almost all types of environmental and intracellular stresses. Upon activation, p38α phosphorylates many substrates both in the cytoplasm and nucleus, allowing this pathway to regulate a wide variety of cellular processes. While the role of p38α in the stress response has been widely investigated, its implication in cell homeostasis is less understood. To investigate the signaling networks regulated by p38α in proliferating cancer cells, we performed quantitative proteomic and phosphoproteomic analyses in breast cancer cells in which this pathway had been either genetically targeted or chemically inhibited. Our study identified with high confidence 35 proteins and 82 phosphoproteins (114 phosphosites) that are modulated by p38α, and highlighted the implication of various protein kinases, including MK2 and mTOR, in the p38α-regulated signaling networks. Moreover, functional analyses revealed an important contribution of p38α to the regulation of cell adhesion, DNA replication and RNA metabolism. Indeed, we provide experimental evidence supporting that p38α facilitates cancer cell adhesion, and showed that this p38α function is likely mediated by the modulation of the adaptor protein ArgBP2. Collectively, our results illustrate the complexity of the p38α regulated signaling networks, provide valuable information on p38α-dependent phosphorylation events in cancer cells, and document a mechanism by which p38α can regulate cell adhesion.Copyright © 2023 The Authors. Exploring Spirituality in Teaching Within a Christian School Context Through Collaborative Action Research
This article reports on a collaborative action research project conducted in New Zealand, during 2012, exploring spirituality in teaching within a Christian school context. The experienced primary school teacher participant chose to take action around the issue of personal fear and insecurity which were believed to be hindering professional growth and relationships. Through self-directed inquiry, critical reflective journaling, Bible study, fellowship and prayer with trusted friends, the teacher experienced a renewed sense of peace and freedom in Christ. This personal transformation was believed to be influential on subsequent professional practice, assisting the teacher to become more relational, responsive and compassionate. The findings provide a rich description of the participant’s spirituality, the lived reality of a person’s spiritual life. This report will be of interest to teachers, teacher-leaders and teacher-educators who desire to explore Christian spirituality through practitioner-led inquiry
Chemical and biological aspects of different species of the genus Clinanthus Herb. (Amaryllidaceae) from South America
The genus Clinanthus Herb. is found in the Andes Region (South America), mainly in Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia. These plants belong to the Amaryllidaceae family, specifically the Amaryllidoideae subfamily, which presents an exclusive group of alkaloids known as Amaryllidaceae alkaloids that show important structural diversity and pharmacological properties. It is possible to find some publications in the literature regarding the botanical aspects of Clinanthus species, although there is little information available about their chemical and biological activities. The aim of this work was to obtain the alkaloid profile and the anti-cholinesterase activity of four different samples of Clinanthus collected in South America: Clinanthus sp., Clinanthus incarnatus, and Clinanthus variegatus. The alkaloid extract of each sample was analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and their potential against the enzymes acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase were evaluated. Thirteen alkaloids have been identified among these species, while six unidentified structures have also been detected in these plants. The alkaloid extract of the C. variegatus samples showed the highest structural diversity as well as the best activity against AChE, which was likely due to the presence of the alkaloid sanguinine. The results suggest this genus as a possible interesting new source of Amaryllidaceae alkaloids, which could contribute to the development of new medicines. Synchronization, Diversity, and Topology of Networks of Integrate and Fire Oscillators
We study synchronization dynamics of a population of pulse-coupled
oscillators. In particular, we focus our attention in the interplay between
networks topological disorder and its synchronization features. Firstly, we
analyze synchronization time in random networks, and find a scaling law
which relates to networks connectivity. Then, we carry on comparing
synchronization time for several other topological configurations,
characterized by a different degree of randomness. The analysis shows that
regular lattices perform better than any other disordered network. The fact can
be understood by considering the variability in the number of links between two
adjacent neighbors. This phenomenon is equivalent to have a non-random topology
with a distribution of interactions and it can be removed by an adequate local
