In this paper, an overview of the application of potentiometry to wine and must ana1ysis is presented.
The large number of electrodes nowadays available with good characteristics for routine use, namely good selectivity
and low response times, allowing measurements in a broad linear dependence range, with a relative low cost,
simple sample pre-treatment requirements, no sensitivity to colour or turbidity of the samples, make potentiometry an attractive instrumental tecnique for wine and must ana1ysis. Methods developed so far present good precision and the results show a fairly good agreement with those obtained by the application of reference methods

Replicated Transfer Matrix Analysis of Ising Spin Models on `Small World' Lattices
We calculate equilibrium solutions for Ising spin models on `small world'
lattices, which are constructed by super-imposing random and sparse Poissonian
graphs with finite average connectivity c onto a one-dimensional ring. The
nearest neighbour bonds along the ring are ferromagnetic, whereas those
corresponding to the Poisonnian graph are allowed to be random. Our models thus
generally contain quenched connectivity and bond disorder. Within the replica
formalism, calculating the disorder-averaged free energy requires the
diagonalization of replicated transfer matrices. In addition to developing the
general replica symmetric theory, we derive phase diagrams and calculate
effective field distributions for two specific cases: that of uniform sparse
long-range bonds (i.e. `small world' magnets), and that of (+J/-J) random
sparse long-range bonds (i.e. `small world' spin-glasses).Comment: 22 pages, LaTeX, IOP macros, eps figure
Lattice Green's function approach to the solution of the spectrum of an array of quantum dots and its linear conductance
In this paper we derive general relations for the band-structure of an array
of quantum dots and compute its transport properties when connected to two
perfect leads. The exact lattice Green's functions for the perfect array and
with an attached adatom are derived. The expressions for the linear conductance
for the perfect array as well as for the array with a defect are presented. The
calculations are illustrated for a dot made of three atoms. The results derived
here are also the starting point to include the effect of electron-electron and
electron-phonon interactions on the transport properties of quantum dot arrays.

Phytoplankton dynamics in relation to seasonal variability and upwelling and relaxation patterns at the mouth of Ria de Aveiro (West Iberian Margin) over a four-year period
From June 2004 to December 2007, samples were weekly collected at a fixed station located at the mouth of Ria de Aveiro (West Iberian Margin). We examined the seasonal and inter-annual fluctuations in composition and community structure of the phytoplankton in relation to the main environmental drivers and assessed the influence of the oceano-graphic regime, namely changes in frequency and intensity of upwelling events, over the dynamics of the phytoplankton assemblage. The samples were consistently handled and a final subset of 136 OTUs (taxa with relative abundance > 0.01%) was subsequently submitted to various multivariate analyses. The phytoplankton assemblage showed significant changes at all temporal scales but with an overriding importance of seasonality over longer-(inter-annual) or shorter-term fluctuations (upwelling-related). Sea-surface temperature, salinity and maximum upwelling index were retrieved as the main driver of seasonal change. Seasonal signal was most evident in the fluctuations of chlorophyll a concentration and in the high turnover from the winter to spring phytoplankton assemblage. The seasonal cycle of production and succession was disturbed by upwelling events known to disrupt thermal stratification and induce changes in the phytoplankton assemblage. Our results indicate that both the frequency and intensity of physical forcing were important drivers of such variability, but the outcome in terms of species composition was highly dependent on the available local pool of species and the timing of those events in relation to the seasonal cycle. We conclude that duration, frequency and intensity of upwelling events, which vary seasonally and inter-annually, are paramount for maintaining long-term phytoplankton diversity likely by allowing unstable coexistence and incorporating species turnover at different scales. The VVV Templates Project. Towards an Automated Classification of VVV Light-Curves. I. Building a database of stellar variability in the near-infrared
Context. The Vista Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea (VVV) ESO Public Survey is
a variability survey of the Milky Way bulge and an adjacent section of the disk
carried out from 2010 on ESO Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for
Astronomy (VISTA). VVV will eventually deliver a deep near-IR atlas with
photometry and positions in five passbands (ZYJHK_S) and a catalogue of 1-10
million variable point sources - mostly unknown - which require
classifications. Aims. The main goal of the VVV Templates Project, that we
introduce in this work, is to develop and test the machine-learning algorithms
for the automated classification of the VVV light-curves. As VVV is the first
massive, multi-epoch survey of stellar variability in the near-infrared, the
template light-curves that are required for training the classification
algorithms are not available. In the first paper of the series we describe the
construction of this comprehensive database of infrared stellar variability.
Methods. First we performed a systematic search in the literature and public
data archives, second, we coordinated a worldwide observational campaign, and
third we exploited the VVV variability database itself on (optically)
well-known stars to gather high-quality infrared light-curves of several
hundreds of variable stars. Results. We have now collected a significant (and
still increasing) number of infrared template light-curves. This database will
be used as a training-set for the machine-learning algorithms that will
automatically classify the light-curves produced by VVV. The results of such an

Compilation of parameterized seismogenic sources in Iberia for the SHARE European-scale seismic source model.
Abstract: SHARE (Seismic Hazard Harmonization in Europe) is an EC-funded project (FP7) that aims to evaluate European seismic hazards using an integrated, standardized approach. In the context of SHARE, we are compiling a fully-parameterized active fault database for Iberia and the nearby offshore region. The principal goal of this initiative is for fault sources in the Iberian region to be represented in SHARE and incorporated into the source model that will be used to produce seismic hazard maps at the European scale. The SHARE project relies heavily on input from many regional experts throughout the Euro-Mediterranean region. At the SHARE regional meeting for Iberia, the 2010 Working Group on Iberian Seismogenic Sources (WGISS) was established; these researchers are contributing to this large effort by providing their data to the Iberian regional integrators in a standardized format. The development of the SHARE Iberian active fault database is occurring in parallel with IBERFAULT, another ongoing effort to compile a database of active faults in the Iberian region.
The SHARE Iberian active fault database synthesizes a wide range of geological and geophysical observations on active seismogenic sources, and incorporates existing compilations (e.g., Cabral, 1995; Silva et al., 2008), original data contributed directly from researchers, data compiled from the literature, parameters estimated using empirical and analytical relationships, and, where necessary, parameters derived using expert judgment. The Iberian seismogenic source model derived for SHARE will be the first regional-scale source model for Iberia that includes fault data and follows an internationally standardized approach (Basili et al., 2008; 2009). This model can be used in both seismic hazard and risk analyses and will be appropriate for use in Iberian- and European-scale assessments
NEXT-100 Technical Design Report (TDR). Executive Summary
In this Technical Design Report (TDR) we describe the NEXT-100 detector that
will search for neutrinoless double beta decay (bbonu) in Xe-136 at the
Laboratorio Subterraneo de Canfranc (LSC), in Spain. The document formalizes
the design presented in our Conceptual Design Report (CDR): an
electroluminescence time projection chamber, with separate readout planes for
calorimetry and tracking, located, respectively, behind cathode and anode. The
detector is designed to hold a maximum of about 150 kg of xenon at 15 bar, or
100 kg at 10 bar. This option builds in the capability to increase the total
isotope mass by 50% while keeping the operating pressure at a manageable level.
The readout plane performing the energy measurement is composed of Hamamatsu
R11410-10 photomultipliers, specially designed for operation in low-background,
xenon-based detectors. Each individual PMT will be isolated from the gas by an
individual, pressure resistant enclosure and will be coupled to the sensitive
volume through a sapphire window. The tracking plane consists in an array of
Hamamatsu S10362-11-050P MPPCs used as tracking pixels. They will be arranged
in square boards holding 64 sensors (8 times8) with a 1-cm pitch. The inner
walls of the TPC, the sapphire windows and the boards holding the MPPCs will be
coated with tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB), a wavelength shifter, to improve the
