    Globalization and the Paradox of Incorporation and Marginalization: An Exploratory Note on Sub-Saharan Africa

    Globalization has of late become the lingua franca of the study of the international political economic system. As its ideological counterpart, globalization has elevated neoliberalism to the status of an international theology. To harness the benefits of a globalizing world economy, conventional wisdom consider the dictums underlying neoliberal policies as “immutable laws” that must be adopted by both the developing and the developed world. Utilizing a structured, focused analysis based on a case study of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), this research challenges the orthodox notion that the new international context of development that is instigated by the imperatives of globalization, and is defined by the ideological framework of neoliberalism has universal, redemptive effects. First, the literature is reviewed to show that this new context of development differs, ideologically, from the post-World War II development paradigms. Second, the demands of the new development framework are exposed with the examination of the links between globalization and neoliberalism. Third, with specific examples from different countries within the sub-region, the path, and the psychological processes through which SSA was (is) conditioned to the political economy of globalization are identified. Then, on the basis of a specified theoretical model, the study examines whether SSA has been attaining the benefits presumed to be associated with subscription to the neoliberal policy demands of the new global market discipline. As a litmus test of competing interpretative accounts, our theoretical function reveals that globalization and its associated neoliberal policy framework, in the context of SSA, precipitate a peculiar paradoxical relationship of incorporation and marginalization. The adoption and implementation of neoliberal policies concurrently incorporate and marginalize SSA within the emerging political economy of globalization. The policy implications of this paradox are examined in the wider context of development and poverty alleviation concerns of the sub-region

    Isotopic (ÎŽ18O and ÎŽ2H) Integrity of Water Samples Collected and Stored by Automatic Samplers

    Stable water isotopes are increasingly becoming part of routine monitoring programs that use automatic samplers. The objectives of this study were to quantify the uncertainty in isotope signatures due to the length of sample storage (1–24 d) inside autosamplers over a range of air temperatures (5–35°C) and to evaluate the effectiveness of two evaporation reduction measures (mineral oil and high density polyethylene balls). Results of the laboratory study showed that up to 11.8% of the sample volume evaporated when samples were stored in an autosampler at 35°C for 24 d.     Anemia prevalence and associated factors among school age children in Accra and Kumasi metropolis in Ghana

    Anemia remains a serious public health concern, globally, affecting learning ability and physical development of children. Anemic children are at a  higher risk of diminished economic productivity and low earning capacity in adulthood due to impaired school performance and reduced work  capacity. Anemia contributes to about a quarter of Africa’s nutrition-related Disability Adjusted Life Years. The objective of this study was to  determine the prevalence of anemia and its associated risk factors among school-aged children (SAC) between ages 9 and 15 years in urban Ghana.  The analysis included a randomly selected subsample of 1,634 children from a larger study on nutrition of SAC enrolled between 2009 and 2012 in  private and public basic schools in the Accra and Kumasi Metropolis in Ghana. Socio-demographic and household characteristics were collected with  questionnaires. Weight and height were taken to the nearest 0.1kg and 0.1cm, respectively. Dietary information was collected using a food  frequency questionnaire. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistic version 23. The relationship between hemoglobin levels and socio-  demographic variables, and predictors of hemoglobin levels were determined using Chi-square and binary logistic regression. The mean  hemoglobin concentration of the study participants was 12.9±1.3 g/dL. In Kumasi, SAC had higher mean hemoglobin concentration (13.1±1.2 g/dL)  compared to those from Accra (12.6±1.3 g/dL; p=0.001). Mean hemoglobin concentration was significantly higher among males than females  (13.0±1.4 g/dL vs 12.8±1.2 g/dL; p=0.002). Prevalence of anemia was 20.4%; mild anemia was most common (13.6% of total sample). Anemia cases  were higher in public schools (24.6%) compared to private (18.2%). Two-thirds of anemia cases (64.0%) were from schools in Accra. Males had significantly higher prevalence of anemia (26.5%) than females (15.9%; p <0.05). In the adjusted logistic regression model, only city of residence (OR+1.65, 95% CI: 1.44–1.83), thinness (OR=2.60, 95% CI: 1.11-5.75), stunting (OR=1.85, 95% CI: 1.99-3.10) and overweight (OR=0.60, 95% CI: 0.36-0.94) were significantly associated with anemia.     A rapid review indicated higher recruitment rates in treatment trials than in prevention trials

    Objectives To test the hypothesis that the percentage of patients screened that randomize differs between prevention and therapy trials. Study Design and Setting Rapid review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) identified through published systematic reviews in August 2013. Individually randomized, parallel group controlled RCTs were eligible if they evaluated metformin monotherapy or exercise for the prevention or treatment of type 2 diabetes. Numbers of patients screened and randomized were extracted by a single reviewer. Percentages were calculated for each study for those randomized: as a function of those approached, screened, and eligible. Percentages (95% confidence intervals) from each individual study were weighted according to the denominator and pooled rates calculated. Statistical heterogeneity was assessed using I2. Results The percentage of those screened who subsequently randomized was 6.2% (6.0%, 6.4%; 3 studies, I2 = 100.0%) for metformin prevention trials; 50.7% (49.9%, 51.4%; 21 studies, I2 = 99.6%) for metformin treatment trials; 4.8% (4.7%, 4.8%; 14 studies, I2 = 99.9%) for exercise prevention trials; and 43.3% (42.6%, 43.9%; 28 studies, I2 = 99.8%) for exercise treatment trials. Conclusion This study provides qualified support for the hypothesis that prevention trials recruit a smaller proportion of those screened than treatment trials. Statistical heterogeneity associated with pooled estimates and other study limitations is discussed.     FAO/WHO GIFT (Global Individual Food consumption data Tool): a global repository for harmonised individual quantitative food consumption studies

    Knowing who eats what, understanding the various eating habits of different population groups, according to the geographical area, is critical to develop evidence-based policies for nutrition and food safety. The FAO/WHO Global Individual Food consumption data Tool (FAO/WHO GIFT) is a novel open-access online platform, hosted by FAO and supported by WHO, providing access to harmonised individual quantitative food consumption (IQFC) data, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). FAO/WHO GIFT is a growing repository, which will serve as the global FAO/WHO hub to disseminate IQFC microdata. Currently five datasets from LMIC are available for dissemination, and an additional fifty datasets will be made available by 2022. To facilitate the use of these data by policy makers, ready-to-use food-based indicators are provided for an overview of key data according to population segments and food groups. FAO/WHO GIFT also provides an inventory of existing IQFC data worldwide, which currently contains detailed information on 188 surveys conducted in seventy-two countries. In order for end-users to be able to aggregate the available data, all datasets are harmonised with the European Food Safety Authority's food classification and description system FoodEx2 (modified for global use). This harmonisation is aimed at enhancing the consistency and reliability of nutrient intake and dietary exposure assessments. FAO/WHO GIFT is developed in synergy with other global initiatives aimed at increasing the quality, availability and use of IQFC data in LMIC to enable evidence-based decision-making and policy development for better nutrition and food safety

    Apesar do crescente interesse pela agricultura orgĂąnica, sĂŁo poucas as informaçÔes de pesquisa disponĂ­veis sobre o assunto. Assim, num Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo distrĂłfico foram comparados os efeitos de sistemas de cultivo orgĂąnico e convencional, para as culturas do tomate (Lycopersicum esculentum) e do milho (Zea mays), sobre a comunidade de organismos do solo e suas atividades. As populaçÔes de fungos,bactĂ©rias e actinomicetos, determinadas pela contagem de colĂŽnias em meio de cultura, foram semelhantes para os dois sistemas de produção. A atividade microbiana, avaliada pela evolução de CO2, manteve-se superior no sistema orgĂąnico, sendo que em determinadas avaliaçÔes foi o dobro da evolução verificada no sistema convencional. O nĂșmero de espĂ©cimes de minhoca foi praticamente dez vezes maior no sistema orgĂąnico. NĂŁo foi observada diferença na taxa de decomposição de matĂ©ria orgĂąnica entre os dois sistemas. De modo geral, o nĂșmero de indivĂ­duos de microartrĂłpodos foi superior no sistema orgĂąnico do que no sistema convencional, refletindo no maior Ă­ndice de diversidade de Shannon. As maiores populaçÔes de insetos foram as da ordem Collembola, enquanto para os ĂĄcaros a maior população foi a da superfamĂ­lia Oribatuloidea.     Protected Areas in Tropical Africa: Assessing Threats and Conservation Activities

    Numerous protected areas (PAs) have been created in Africa to safeguard wildlife and other natural resources. However, significant threats from anthropogenic activities and decline of wildlife populations persist, while conservation efforts in most PAs are still minimal. We assessed the impact level of the most common threats to wildlife within PAs in tropical Africa and the relationship of conservation activities with threat impact level. We collated data on 98 PAs with tropical forest cover from 15 countries across West, Central and East Africa. For this, we assembled information about local threats as well as conservation activities from published and unpublished literature, and questionnaires sent to long-term field workers. We constructed general linear models to test the significance of specific conservation activities in relation to the threat impact level. Subsistence and commercial hunting were identified as the most common direct threats to wildlife and found to be most prevalent in West and Central Africa. Agriculture and logging represented the most common indirect threats, and were most prevalent in West Africa. We found that the long-term presence of conservation activities (such as law enforcement, research and tourism) was associated with lower threat impact levels.     Megafire:An ambiguous and emotive term best avoided by science

    Background: As fire regimes are changing and wildfire disasters are becoming more frequent, the term megafire is increasingly used to describe impactful wildfires, under multiple meanings, both in academia and popular media. This has resulted in a highly ambiguous concept.Approach: We analysed the use of the term ‘megafire’ in popular media to determine its origin, its developments over time, and its meaning in the public sphere. We subsequently discuss how relative the term ‘mega’ is, and put this in the context of an analysis of Portuguese and global data on fire size distribution.Results: We found that ‘megafire’ originated in the popular news media over 20 years before it appeared in science. Megafire is used in a diversity of languages, considers landscape fires as well as urban fires, and has a variety of meanings in addition to size. What constitutes ‘mega’ is relative and highly context-dependent in space and time, given variation in landscape, climate, and anthropogenic controls, and as revealed in examples from the Netherlands, Portugal and the Global Fire Atlas. Moreover, fire size does not equate to fire impact.Conclusion: Given the diverse meanings of megafire in the popular media, we argue that redefining megafire in science potentially leads to greater disparity between science and practice. Megafire is widely used as an emotive term that is best left for popular media. For those wanting to use it in science, what constitutes a megafire should be defined by the context in which it is used, not by a metric of one-size-fits-all.</p
