    This paper presents experimental results of four prismatic concrete reinforced beam and strengthened by NSM (Near surface mounted) FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) reinforced technique, with additional roots planted in the concrete. The strengthening technique causes load capacity of beams to increase from (6%-8%).A decrease in mid-span deflection was also observed from (4%-5%).Using this technique gave increasing in flexural beam resistant under the same conditions and this increasing was also noted in shear beam resistant

    Detection of Inositol Polyphosphates by Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (PAGE) under Apoptotic Conditions in Cultured SW480 Cells

    Inositol phosphates are naturally occurring compounds that regulate diverse cellular processes including apoptosis. Apoptosis is a mechanism by which cells undergo natural death to maintain cellular homeostasis. It causes cell death in areas during a state that is harmful to the body. It also regulates cellular development. Previous work has shown that exogenously administered, as well as endogenously manipulated inositol phosphates bring about apoptotic changes. It has been demonstrated that cellular levels of inositol phosphates, particularly higher inositol phosphates such as inositol hexakis-phosphate (IP6) and diphosphoinositol pentakis-phosphate (IP7) levels increase during apoptotic conditions. In this study, we have attempted to separate and identify higher inositol phosphates such as IP6 by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) and shown that changes in inositol phosphate levels can be detected by this method. Cells were treated with etoposide to induce apoptosis, and apoptotic cells were observed under UV light following ethidium bromide/acridine orange staining. This staining showed that IP3 - IP6 induced apoptosis in SW480 cells with IP6 being the most effective inducing agent. The extracts from apoptotic and control cells were then loaded onto the polyacrylamide gel and run along with standard IP6. Results showed that IP6 could be detected using the PAGE method and that cellular levels of IP6 were increased in SW480 cells, in which apoptosis had been induced by etoposide. Our results demonstrated that this technique could be utilized instead of the laborious radioactive labeling and HPLC separation method to study the changes in cellular levels of inositol phosphates particularly IP6

    From Starburst to Quiescence: Testing AGN feedback in Rapidly Quenching Post-Starburst Galaxies

    Post-starbursts are galaxies in transition from the blue cloud to the red sequence. Although they are rare today, integrated over time they may be an important pathway to the red sequence. This work uses SDSS, GALEX, and WISE observations to identify the evolutionary sequence from starbursts to fully quenched post-starbursts in the narrow mass range logM(M)=10.310.7\log M(M_\odot) = 10.3-10.7, and identifies "transiting" post-starbursts which are intermediate between these two populations. In this mass range, 0.3%\sim 0.3\% of galaxies are starbursts, 0.1%\sim 0.1\% are quenched post-starbursts, and 0.5%\sim 0.5\% are the transiting types in between. The transiting post-starbursts have stellar properties that are predicted for fast-quenching starbursts and morphological characteristics that are already typical of early-type galaxies. The AGN fraction, as estimated from optical line ratios, of these post-starbursts is about 3 times higher (36±8%\gtrsim 36 \pm 8 \%) than that of normal star-forming galaxies of the same mass, but there is a significant delay between the starburst phase and the peak of nuclear optical AGN activity (median age difference of 200±100\gtrsim 200 \pm 100 Myr), in agreement with previous studies. The time delay is inferred by comparing the broad-band near NUV-to-optical photometry with stellar population synthesis models. We also find that starbursts and post-starbursts are significantly more dust-obscured than normal star-forming galaxies in the same mass range. About 20%20\% of the starbursts and 15%15\% of the transiting post-starbursts can be classified as the "Dust-Obscured Galaxies" (DOGs), while only 0.8%0.8\% of normal galaxies are DOGs.The time delay between the starburst phase and AGN activity suggests that AGN do not play a primary role in the original quenching of starbursts but may be responsible for quenching later low-level star formation during the post-starburst phase.Comment: 30 pages, 18 figures,accepted to Ap

The properties of these newly suggested estimators were examined. Comparisons between special cases of these estimators and other known estimators are made using a real data set.     Fermentative attributes of wilted vs. unwilted Digitaria eriantha silage

    Silages made from directly cut or wilted Digitaria eriantha treated with or without molasses were evaluated to determine fermentative characteristics. The grass was harvested at the boot stage of growth and the material was ensiled in 1 kg mini-silos. Treatments were arranged in a factorial design of two moisture levels (directly cut or wilted) and two molasses addition (with or without molasses). Each treatment was ensiled in 12 separate bottles. The pH of molasses added silage declined faster than the pH of silage without molasses. The pH of unwilted silages continued to decline up to day 120 post ensiling compared to wilted treatments. Lactic acid concentration was higher for molasses added silage than those made without molasses at all ensiling times, and also higher for directly cut silage than those wilted prior to ensiling. In direct cut silages, acetic acid concentration was lower for molasses added silage than those made without molasses at all ensiling times. In both silages, with or without molasses, the acetic acid concentrations were significantly higher for unwilted silage than silage wilted prior to ensiling. The ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) as percentage of total nitrogen (N) was higher in unwilted silage than prior wilted silage without molasses, while in the presence of molasses the effect of wilting on NH3-N as percentage of total N was not significant.     The performance of mid-upper arm circumference for identifying children and adolescents with overweight and obesity : a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Objective: This study aimed to synthesise the existing evidence on the performance of mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) to identify children and adolescents with overweight and obesity. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Setting: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CINAHL and Google scholar databases from their inception to December 10, 2021, for relevant studies. There were no restrictions regarding the language of publication. Studies reporting measures for the diagnostic performance of MUAC compared with a reference standard for diagnosing overweight and obesity in children and adolescents aged 2–19 years were included. Participants: A total of 54 381 children and adolescents from twenty-one studies were reviewed; ten studies contributed to meta-analyses. Results: In boys, MUAC showed a pooled AUC of 0·92 (95 % CI 0·89, 0·94), sensitivity of 84·4 (95 % CI 84·6, 90·8) and a specificity of 86·0 (95 % CI 79·2, 90·8), when compared against BMI z-score, defined overweight and obesity. As for girls, MUAC showed a pooled AUC of 0·93 (95 % CI 0·90, 0·95), sensitivity of 86·4 (95 % CI 79·8, 91·0), specificity of 86·6 (95 % CI 82·2, 90·1) when compared against overweight and obesity defined using BMI z-scores. Conclusion: In comparison with BMI, MUAC has an excellent performance to identify overweight and obesity in children and adolescents. However, no sufficient evidence on the performance of MUAC compared with gold standard measures of adiposity. Future research should compare performance of MUAC to the ‘golden standard’ measure of excess adiposity

    B-Type Natriuretic Peptide: A Predictor for Mortality, Intensive Care Unit Length of Stay, and Hospital Length of Stay in Patients With Resolving Sepsis

    Background: B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a hormone secreted by cardiomyocytes in response to myocardial ischemia, increased ventricular wall tension, and overload. BNP is utilized as a diagnostic and prognostic marker in congested heart failure (CHF). Its prognostic value in sepsis is unknown. The aim of this study is to determine if BNP correlates with increased in-hospital mortality for septic patients. Methods: This was a retrospective study of 505 patients admitted for sepsis or severe sepsis or septic shock during the period of January 2013 and August 2014. Patients that received \u3e 3 L of intravenous fluids on presentation were included. Intensive care unit length of stay (ICULOS), hospital length of stay (HLOS) and in-hospital mortality were measured. Mean BNP level was calculated and compared to ICULOS and HLOS and in-hospital mortality. Controlled variables included ejection fraction (measured by echocardiogram within 6 months of presentation), glomerular filtration rate (calculated by Cockroft-Gault equation), patient demographics, and lactic acid trends. Exclusion criteria were no echocardiogram within 6 months of admission, no BNP levels on admission, and no repeat lactate or rising lactate levels within 24 h to indicate worsening sepsis. Results: Patients\u27 mean BNP with in-hospital mortality was 908 pg/mL as compared to mean BNP of 678 pg/mL in survivors. T-test comparisons were statistically significant (P = 0.0375). The Kaplan-Meier curve for BNP as a predictor for in-hospital mortality showed that for the first 25 days, patients with BNP higher than 500 pg/mL had a higher mortality than patients with BNP lower than 500 pg/mL. When comparing HLOS, there is a statistically significant correlation (P = 0.0046). A similar scatter plot was prepared for ICULOS which showed there was a weak positive correlation (r = 0.199). Conclusion: Septic patients with in-hospital mortality had an average BNP of 908 pg/mL and statistically significant higher HLOS
