Integrating Offshore Wind and Wave Resource Assessment
The aim of this paper is to review the sources of wind and wave information, the methodologies to assess offshore wind and wave energy resources, and the more relevant results at the European level as a first step to integration of the evaluation of both resources. In situ and remote sensed wind and wave data (using satellite based sensors) are done generally by distinct systems (except for SAR) but numerical atmospheric models and wind - wave models are closely related. Offshore wind resource studies using various types of data are reviewed especially in northern European seas and in the Mediterranean. The wave energy resource assessment at European and national levels is also reviewed and the various atlases are identified
Emerging roles of extracellular vesicle-associated non-coding RNAs in hypoxia: Insights from cancer, myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke
Hypoxia is a central pathophysiological component in cancer, myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke, which represent the most common medical conditions resulting in long-term disability and death. Recent evidence suggests common signaling pathways in these diverse settings mediated by non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), which are packaged in extracellular vesicles (EVs) protecting ncRNAs from degradation. EVs are a heterogeneous group of lipid bilayer-covered vesicles released from virtually all cells, which have important roles in intercellular communication. Recent studies pointed out that ncRNAs including long non-coding RNAs (IncRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs) are selectively sorted into EVs, modulating specific aspects of cancer development, namely cell proliferation, migration, invasion, angiogenesis, immune tolerance or drug resistance, under conditions of hypoxia in recipient cells. In myocardial infarction and stroke, ncRNAs shuttled via EVs have been shown to control tissue survival and remodeling post-hypoxia by regulating cell injury, inflammatory responses, angiogenesis, neurogenesis or neuronal plasticity. This review discusses recent evidence on EV-associated ncRNAs in hypoxic cancer, myocardial infarction and stroke, discussing their cellular origin, biological function and disease significance. The emerging concept of IncRNA-circular RNA/ miRNA/ mRNA networks is outlined, upon which ncRNAs synergistically respond to hypoxia in order to modify disease responses. Particular notion is given to ncRNAs participating in at least two of the three conditions, which revealed a large degree of overlaps across pathophysiological conditions. Possible roles of EV-ncRNAs as therapeutic products or theranostic markers are defined
Odd Frequency Pairing in the Kondo Lattice
We discuss the possibility that heavy fermion superconductors involve
odd-frequency pairing of the kind first considered by Berezinskii. Using a toy
model for odd frequency triplet pairing in the Kondo lattice we are able to
examine key properties of this new type of paired state. To make progress
treating the strong constraint in the Kondo lattice model we use the
technical trick of a Majorana representation of the local moments, which
permits variational treatments of the model without a Gutzwiller approximation.
The simplest mean field theory involves the development of bound states between
the local moments and conduction electrons, characterized by a spinor order
parameter. We show that this state is a stable realization of odd frequency
triplet superconductivity with surfaces of gapless excitations whose spin and
charge coherence factors vanish linearly in the quasiparticle energy. A
NMR relaxation rate coexists with a linear specific heat. We discuss possible
extensions of our toy model to describe heavy fermion superconductivity.Comment: 67 page
The longitudinal NIHR ARC North West Coast Household Health Survey: exploring health inequalities in disadvantaged communities.
BACKGROUND: The Household Health Survey (HHS) was developed to understand the socioeconomic determinants of mental and physical health, and health inequalities in health and social care. This paper aims to provide a detailed rationale of the development and implementation of the survey and explore socio-economic variations in physical and mental health and health care. METHODS: This comprehensive longitudinal public health survey was designed and piloted in a disadvantaged area of England, comprising questions on housing, physical health, mental health, lifestyle, social issues, environment, work, and finances. After piloting, the HHS was implemented across 28 neighbourhoods - 10 disadvantaged neighbourhoods for learning (NfLs), 10 disadvantaged comparator sites, and eight relatively advantaged areas, in 2015 and 2018. Participants were recruited via random sampling of households in pre-selected neighbourhoods based on their areas of deprivation. RESULTS: 7731 residents participated in Wave 1 (N = 4319) and 2 (n = 3412) of the survey, with 871 residents having participated in both. Mental health, physical health, employment, and housing quality were poorer in disadvantaged neighbourhoods than in relatively advantaged areas. CONCLUSIONS: This survey provides important insights into socio-economic variations in physical and mental health, with findings having implications for improved care provision to enable residents from any geographical or socio-economic background to access suitable care
Aircraft and ground-based measurements of hydroperoxides during the 2006 MILAGRO field campaign
International audienceMixing ratios of hydrogen peroxide and hydroxymethyl hydroperoxide were determined aboard the US Department of Energy G-1 Research Aircraft during the March 2006 MILAGRO field campaign in Mexico. Ground measurements of total hydroperoxide were made at the T1 site at Universidad Technologica de Tecámac, about 35 km NW of Mexico City. In the air and on the ground, peroxide mixing ratios near the source region were generally near 1 ppbv, much lower than had been predicted from photochemical models based on the 2003 Mexico City study. Strong southerly flow resulted in transport of pollutants from the T0 to T1 and T2 surface sites on several flight days. On these days, it was observed that peroxide concentrations slightly decreased as the G-1 flew progressively downwind. This observation is consistent with low or negative net peroxide production rates calculated for the source region and is due to the very high NOx concentrations above the Mexico City plateau. However, relatively high values of peroxide were observed at takeoff and landing near Veracruz, a site with much higher humidity and lower NOx concentrations
Evaluation of Advanced Wind Power Forecasting Models – Results of the Anemos Project
Disponible : http://www.ewec2006proceedings.info/allfiles2/969_Ewec2006fullpaper.pdfInternational audienceAn outstanding question posed today by end-users like power system operators, wind power producers or traders is what performance can be expected by state-of-the-art wind power prediction models. This paper presents results of the first ever intercomparison of a number of advanced prediction systems performed in the frame of the European project Anemos. A framework for error characterization has been developed consisting by a measure- and a distribution-oriented approach. This comparison has given a perspective of the possibilities and limitations of the forecasts in the different test cases that were defined. At a second stage, the homogenous comparison process has permitted to evaluate the possibility of obtaining better performance by exploiting the merits of individual models through model combination. The paper presents the methodology and results from the combination approach
