    Teacher and Child Interaction: The Effects of Familial Distress, Child Behavior, and Teacher Perceptions

    There has been a significant amount of research that has studied the ecological conditions that create behavioral problems for children from families that are female headed, in poverty, and live in areas where there is violent crime. There has also been evidence that revealed statistically significant associations between the way teachers perceive students from low socioeconomic backgrounds and their beliefs of the capacity of the children to learn. Studies have also examined how teachers interact with children that are exhibiting behavioral problems that are from low socio-economic status. However, to date there has been no study that has combined these ecological conditions of female headed households, poverty, exposure to violent crime, behavioral problems, and teacher perceptions effects on the way teachers interact with them through reading instructional activities. This thesis uses a three-model analysis that examines this relationship as well as relevant control variables that have been found to be significantly associated with teacher interactions and instructional time. The results indicated that the greater the perception of violent crime the greater amount of time children spend in teacher directed individual reading activities. Also, the results indicated that teachers who responded neutrally to perceived problem behaviors affecting instruction were more likely to spend a greater amount of time with students in teacher directed individual reading activities whose families are female headed, living in poverty, and from communities where violent crime is a big problem. These results indicate that while controlling for relevant control variables violent crime and perception of behavior have a significant effect on the amount of time teachers spend in teacher directed individual reading activities. The findings of violent crime and neutrality concerning problem behavior effects on the amount of time spent in teacher directed individual reading activities are of particular interest for future research

    In this paper we present a new polynomial function for calculating the local phase transformation temperature (Ae3 ) between the austenite+ferrite and the fully austenitic phase fields during heating and cooling of steel:[Formula: see text] The dataset includes the terms of the function and the values for the polynomial coefficients for major alloying elements in steel. A short description of the approximation method used to derive and validate the coefficients has also been included.     Analytical method to measure three-dimensional strain patterns in the left ventricle from single slice displacement data

    Background: Displacement encoded Cardiovascular MR (CMR) can provide high spatial resolution measurements of three-dimensional (3D) Lagrangian displacement. Spatial gradients of the Lagrangian displacement field are used to measure regional myocardial strain. In general, adjacent parallel slices are needed in order to calculate the spatial gradient in the through-slice direction. This necessitates the acquisition of additional data and prolongs the scan time. The goal of this study is to define an analytic solution that supports the reconstruction of the out-of-plane components of the Lagrangian strain tensor in addition to the in-plane components from a single-slice displacement CMR dataset with high spatio-temporal resolution. The technique assumes incompressibility of the myocardium as a physical constraint. Results: The feasibility of the method is demonstrated in a healthy human subject and the results are compared to those of other studies. The proposed method was validated with simulated data and strain estimates from experimentally measured DENSE data, which were compared to the strain calculation from a conventional two-slice acquisition. Conclusion: This analytical method reduces the need to acquire data from adjacent slices when calculating regional Lagrangian strains and can effectively reduce the long scan time by a factor of two

    A Conceptual Framework for Servitization in Industry 4.0: Distilling Directions for Future Research

    Purpose: This paper focusses on developing further the recent conceptual frameworks of competitive dynamics and business-to-business value ecosystems considering the changing environment of Industry 4.0 and the particular perspective of servitization. Design/Methodology/Approach: This a conceptual paper that reviews and syntheses business model concepts in relation to competitive dynamics, collaborative business ecosystems and supply chain as evolving and reshaping manufacturing and services within Industry 4.0. Findings: The transformation of organizations in light of Industry 4.0 has led to a reframing of business models and practices, such as stakeholder value and supply chain relationships cooperating within a highly dynamic environment. In an attempt to consider the implications that Industry 4.0 has, particularly from the service perspective, this work attempts to distil directions for future research. Originality/Value: Previous studies on Industry 4.0 have articulated the reasoning about the benefits of Industry 4.0, with its paradigm shift to cyber-physical systems and revised business models. The intention of this paper, is to be able to further define collaboration and value ecosystems in order to show the interdependence and integration between organisations as applied to servitization within Industry 4.0. Moreover, this paper seeks to begin to articulate how research can be conducted to determine the degree to which the change and paradigm shift has become a reality

    Neural locus of color afterimages.

    After fixating on a colored pattern, observers see a similar pattern in complementary colors when the stimulus is removed. Afterimages were important in disproving the theory that visual rays emanate from the eye[1], in demonstrating inter-ocular interactions[2], and in revealing the independence of binocular-vision from eye-movements[3]. Afterimages also prove invaluable in exploring selective attention[4], filling-in[5], and consciousness[6]. Proposed physiological mechanisms for color afterimages range from bleaching of cone photo-pigments[7] to cortical adaptation[4–6, 8, 9], but direct neural measurements have not been reported. We introduce a time-varying method for evoking after-images, which provides precise measurements of adaptation and a direct link between visual percepts and neural responses[10]. We then use in vivo electrophysiological recordings to show that all three classes of primate retinal ganglion cells exhibit subtractive adaptation to prolonged stimuli, with much slower time-constants than those expected of photoreceptors. At the cessation of the stimulus, ganglion cells generate rebound responses that can provide afterimage signals for later neurons. Our results indicate that afterimage signals are generated in the retina, but may be modified like other retinal signals by cortical processes[4–6], so that evidence presented for cortical generation of color afterimages[8, 9] is explainable by spatio-temporal factors that apply to all signals

    MYSTIC: Michigan Young STar Imager at CHARA

    We present the design for MYSTIC, the Michigan Young STar Imager at CHARA. MYSTIC will be a K-band, cryogenic, 6-beam combiner for the Georgia State University CHARA telescope array. The design follows the image-plane combination scheme of the MIRC instrument where single-mode fibers bring starlight into a non-redundant fringe pattern to feed a spectrograph. Beams will be injected in polarization-maintaining fibers outside the cryogenic dewar and then be transported through a vacuum feedthrough into the ~220K cold volume where combination is achieved and the light is dispersed. We will use a C-RED One camera (First Light Imaging) based on the eAPD SAPHIRA detector to allow for near-photon-counting performance. We also intend to support a 4-telescope mode using a leftover integrated optics component designed for the VLTI-GRAVITY experiment, allowing better sensitivity for the faintest targets. Our primary science driver motivation is to image disks around young stars in order to better understand planet formation and how forming planets might influence disk structures.Comment: Presented at the 2018 SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation, Austin, Texas, US
