Hydrogen from coal cost estimation guidebook
In an effort to establish baseline information whereby specific projects can be evaluated, a current set of parameters which are typical of coal gasification applications was developed. Using these parameters a computer model allows researchers to interrelate cost components in a sensitivity analysis. The results make possible an approximate estimation of hydrogen energy economics from coal, under a variety of circumstances
Rapid Oscillations in Cataclysmic Variables. XV. HT Camelopardalis (= RX J0757.0+6306)
We present photometry and spectroscopy of HT Camelopardalis, a recently
discovered X-ray-bright cataclysmic variable. The spectrum shows bright lines
of H, He I, and He II, all moving with a period of 0.059712(1) d, which we
interpret as the orbital period. The star's brightness varies with a strict
period of 515.0592(2) s, and a mean full amplitude of 0.11 mag. These
properties qualify it as a /bona fide/ DQ Herculis star (intermediate polar) --
in which the magnetism of the rapidly rotating white dwarf channels accretion
flow to the surface. Normally at V=17.8, the star shows rare and very brief
outbursts to V=12-13. We observed one in December 2001, and found that the 515
s pulse amplitude had increased by a factor of ~100 (in flux units). A

A Coronal Hole's Effects on CME Shock Morphology in the Inner Heliosphere
We use STEREO imagery to study the morphology of a shock driven by a fast
coronal mass ejection (CME) launched from the Sun on 2011 March 7. The source
region of the CME is located just to the east of a coronal hole. The CME ejecta
is deflected away from the hole, in contrast with the shock, which readily
expands into the fast outflow from the coronal hole. The result is a CME with
ejecta not well centered within the shock surrounding it. The shock shape
inferred from the imaging is compared with in situ data at 1 AU, where the
shock is observed near Earth by the Wind spacecraft, and at STEREO-A. Shock
normals computed from the in situ data are consistent with the shock morphology

Comprehensive Analysis of Coronal Mass Ejection Mass and Energy Properties Over a Full Solar Cycle
The LASCO coronagraphs, in continuous operation since 1995, have observed the
evolution of the solar corona and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) over a full
solar cycle with high quality images and regular cadence. This is the first
time that such a dataset becomes available and constitutes a unique resource
for the study of CMEs. In this paper, we present a comprehensive investigation
of the solar cycle dependence on the CME mass and energy over a full solar
cycle (1996-2009) including the first in-depth discussion of the mass and
energy analysis methods and their associated errors. Our analysis provides
several results worthy of further studies. It demonstrates the possible
existence of two event classes; 'normal' CMEs reaching constant mass for
R_{\sun} and 'pseudo' CMEs which disappear in the C3 FOV. It shows that the
mass and energy properties of CME reach constant levels, and therefore should
be measured, only above \sim 10 R_\sun. The mass density (g/R_\sun^2) of
CMEs varies relatively little ( order of magnitude) suggesting that the
majority of the mass originates from a small range in coronal heights. We find
a sudden reduction in the CME mass in mid-2003 which may be related to a change
in the electron content of the large scale corona and we uncover the presence
of a six-month periodicity in the ejected mass from 2003 onwards.Comment: 42 pages, 16 figures, To appear in Astrophysical Journa
The Capaciousness of No: Affective Refusals as Literacy Practices

Reading Research Quarterly published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. on behalf of International Literacy Association The authors considered the capacious feeling that emerges from saying no to literacy practices, and the affective potential of saying no as a literacy practice. The authors highlight the affective possibilities of saying no to normative understandings of literacy, thinking with a series of vignettes in which children, young people, and teachers refused literacy practices in different ways. The authors use the term capacious to signal possibilities that are as yet unthought: a sense of broadening and opening out through enacting no. The authors examined how attention to affect ruptures humanist logics that inform normative approaches to literacy. Through attention to nonconscious, noncognitive, and transindividual bodily forces and capacities, affect deprivileges the human as the sole agent in an interaction, thus disrupting measurements of who counts as a literate subject and what counts as a literacy event. No is an affective moment. It can signal a pushback, an absence, or a silence. As a theoretical and methodological way of thinking/feeling with literacy, affect proposes problems rather than solutions, countering solution-focused research in which the resistance is to be overcome, co-opted, or solved. Affect operates as a crack or a chink, a tiny ripple, a barely perceivable gesture, that can persist and, in doing so, hold open the possibility for alternative futures
Driver behaviour with adaptive cruise control
This paper reports on the evaluation of adaptive cruise control (ACC) from a psychological perspective. It was anticipated that ACC would have an effect upon the psychology of driving, i.e. make the driver feel like they have less control, reduce the level of trust in the vehicle, make drivers less situationally aware, but workload might be reduced and driving might be less stressful. Drivers were asked to drive in a driving simulator under manual and ACC conditions. Analysis of variance techniques were used to determine the effects of workload (i.e. amount of traffic) and feedback (i.e. degree of information from the ACC system) on the psychological variables measured (i.e. locus of control, trust, workload, stress, mental models and situation awareness). The results showed that: locus of control and trust were unaffected by ACC, whereas situation awareness, workload and stress were reduced by ACC. Ways of improving situation awareness could include cues to help the driver predict vehicle trajectory and identify conflicts
Nurses' perceptions of online continuing education
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>There is increasing attention to online learning as a convenient way of getting professional training. The number and popularity of online nursing continuing education programs are increasing rapidly in many countries. Understanding these may contribute to designing these programs to maximize success. Also, knowing the perceptions and preferences in online learning aids development and orientation of online programs. The aims of this study are to show nurses' perceptions of online continuing education and to determine perceptions of various groups; area groups, working companies, frequency of computer usage and age.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The survey method was used in this quantitative study to reveal perception levels and relationship with related variables. Data were collected through an online instrument from a convenience sample of 1041 Registered Nurses (RNs) at an online bachelor's degree program. Descriptive and inferential analysis techniques were performed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Nurses generally have positive perceptions about online learning (<it>X </it>= 3.86; SD = 0.48). A significant difference was seen between nurses who used computers least and those with the highest computer usage [<it>F </it>(3, 1033) = 3.040; <it>P </it>< .05]. Neither nurses' ages nor lengths of working experience are significantly related to perceptions of online programs (<it>r </it>= -.013; <it>P </it>> .05 and <it>r </it>= -.036; <it>P </it>> .05, respectively). Nurses' perceptions are significantly different depending on the settings where they work [<it>F </it>(3,989) = 3.193; <it>P </it>< .05]. The difference between perceptions of nurses living in urban areas (<it>X </it>= 3.82; SD = .51) and those living in rural areas (<it>X </it>= 3.88; SD = .47) was not significant [<it>t </it>(994) = -1.570, <it>P </it>> .05].</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We found that nurses regard online learning opportunities as suitable for their working conditions and needs. Nurses should be provided with continued training through online learning alternatives, regardless of age, working experience or area of residence.</p
