Evaluation of PCR as a diagnostic mass-screening tool to detect Leishmania (Viannia) spp. in domestic dogs (Canis familiaris).
Several studies have suggested that the PCR could be used in epidemiological mass-screening surveys to detect Leishmania (Viannia) spp. infection in human and animal hosts. Dogs from an area of Leishmania braziliensis and Leishmania peruviana endemicity were screened for American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) infection by established PCR-based and enzyme-linked immunosorbent antibody test (ELISA) protocols. PCR detected Leishmania (Viannia) infection in a total of 90 of 1,066 (8.4%) dogs: 32 of 368 (8.7%), 65 of 769 (8.5%), and 7 of 42 (16.7%) dogs were PCR positive by testing of whole blood, buffy coat, and bone marrow aspirates, respectively. ELISA detected infection in 221 of 1,059 (20.9%) tested dogs. The high prevalence of Leishmania (Viannia) detected by PCR and ELISA in both asymptomatic (7.5 and 19.2%, respectively) and symptomatic (32 and 62.5%, respectively) dogs is further circumstantial evidence for their suspected role as reservoir hosts of ACL. However, the low sensitivity of PCR (31%) compared to ELISA (81%) indicates that PCR cannot be used for mass screening of samples in ACL epidemiological studies. Unless more-sensitive PCR protocols were to be developed, its use should be restricted to the diagnosis of active (canine and human) cases and to the parasitological monitoring of patients after chemotherapy
Maximum power, ecological function and efficiency of an irreversible Carnot cycle. A cost and effectiveness optimization
In this work we include, for the Carnot cycle, irreversibilities of linear
finite rate of heat transferences between the heat engine and its reservoirs,
heat leak between the reservoirs and internal dissipations of the working
fluid. A first optimization of the power output, the efficiency and ecological
function of an irreversible Carnot cycle, with respect to: internal temperature
ratio, time ratio for the heat exchange and the allocation ratio of the heat
exchangers; is performed. For the second and third optimizations, the optimum
values for the time ratio and internal temperature ratio are substituted into
the equation of power and, then, the optimizations with respect to the cost and
effectiveness ratio of the heat exchangers are performed. Finally, a criterion
of partial optimization for the class of irreversible Carnot engines is herein

Development of a reusable practice device to measure the power, accuracy, and placement of a golf shot
Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2005.Includes bibliographical references (leaf 17).The purpose of this thesis was to develop a reusable practice device that could help golfers analyze their shots. A Magic Pad, consisting of a translucent, plastic top layer and a statically charged thin layer of cardboard, was modified and placed on the clubface. When the clubface strikes the ball, the top plastic layer attaches itself to the bottom layer creating a noticeable impression. By peeling the top layer, the device could be reset and used again several times. A series of tests was conducted to prove the viability of this device. The device was effective in analyzing several aspects of a golf shot. The marks made on the device from impact with the ball were clear and dark. This device is most effective in determining the placement of the ball on the clubface, but it is also successful in identifying inaccurate shots. Slices occur when the club head does not hit the ball squarely, and this is translated unto the device. A few characteristic marks signal a slice. The most obvious is a mark with amorphous shape, favoring one side of the ball, instead of a circular indentation. Shear streaks, straight diagonal lines at the angle of impact, are also apparent and allow the golfer to adjust their swing to compensate.(cont.) The third aspect of the shot that the device could have measured was the power. A bigger indentation did not necessarily produce the greatest yardage, however. The most impressive indentations were produced by a combination of accuracy and power. In this way, the golfer can clearly identify a quality shot. Mechanosensitive ion channels in cell migration
Cellular processes are initiated and regulated by different stimuli, including mechanical forces. Cell membrane mechanosensors represent the first step towards the conversion of mechanical stimuli to a biochemical or electrical response. Mechanosensitive (MS) ion channels form a growing family of ion gating channels that respond to direct physical force or plasma membrane deformations. A number of calcium (Ca2+) permeable MS channels are known to regulate the initiation, direction, and persistence of cell migration during development and tumour progression. While the evidence that links individual MS ion channels to cell migration is growing, a unified analysis of the molecular mechanisms regulated downstream of MS ion channel activation is lacking. In this review, we describe the MS ion channel families known to regulate cell migration. We discuss the molecular mechanisms that act downstream of MS ion channels with an emphasis on Ca2+ mediated processes. Finally, we propose the future directions and impact of MS ion channel activity in the field of cell migration
The mechanosensitive channel Piezo1 cooperates with semaphorins to control neural crest migration
Cells are permanently exposed to a multitude of different kinds of signals: however, how cells respond to simultaneous extracellular signals within a complex in vivo environment is poorly understood. Here, we studied the role of the mechanosensitive ion channel Piezo1 on the migration of the neural crest, a multipotent embryonic cell population. We identify that Piezo1 is required for the migration of Xenopus cephalic neural crest. We show that loss of Piezo1 promotes focal adhesion turnover and cytoskeletal dynamics by controlling Rac1 activity, leading to increased speed of migration. Moreover, overactivation of Rac1, due to Piezo1 inhibition, counteracts cell migration inhibitory signals by Semaphorin 3A and Semaphorin 3F, generating aberrant neural crest invasion in vivo. Thus, we find that, for directional migration in vivo, neural crest cells require a tight regulation of Rac1, by semaphorins and Piezo1. We reveal here that a balance between a myriad of signals through Rac1 dictates cell migration in vivo, a mechanism that is likely to be conserved in other cell migration processes

Valence fuctuation and magnetic ordering in EuNi2(P1-xGex)2 single crystals
Unusual phases and phase transitions are seen at the magnetic-nonmagnetic
boundary in Ce, Eu and Yb-based compounds. EuNiP is a very unusual
valence fluctuating Eu system, because at low temperatures the Eu valence stays
close to 2.5 instead of approaching an integer value. Eu valence and thus the
magnetic property in this system can be tuned by Ge substitution in P site as
EuNiGe is known to exhibit antiferromagnetc (AFM) ordering of
divalent Eu moments with = 30 K. We have grown
EuNi(PGe) (0.0 0.5) single crystals and
studied their magnetic, thermodynamic and transport properties. Increasing Ge
doping to 0.4 results in a well-defined AFM ordered state with = 12
K for = 0.5. Moreover, the reduced value of magnetic entropy for = 0.5
at suggests the presence of valance fluctuation/ Kondo effect in this
compound. Interestingly, the specific heat exhibits an enhanced Sommerfeld
coefficient upon Ge doping. Subsequently, electronic structure calculations
lead to a non-integral valence in EuNiP but a stable divalent Eu
state in EuNiGe which is in good agreement with experimental results.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
Analysis of the quark sector in the 2HDM-III with a four-zero Yukawa texture using the most recent data on the CKM matrix
In this letter we analyse, in the context of the general 2-Higgs Doublet
Model, the structure of the Yukawa matrices, , by assuming a four-zero texture ansatz for their definition. In this
framework, we obtain compact expressions for , which are reduced to the Cheng and Sher ansatz with the difference that
they are obtained naturally as a direct consequence of the invariants of the
fermion mass matrices. Furthermore, in order to avoid large flavour violating
effects coming from charged Higgs exchange, we consider the main flavour
constraints on the off-diagonal terms of Yukawa texture {{}} (). We perform a -fit
based on current experimental data on the quark masses and the
Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix . Hence, we obtain
the allowed ranges for the parameters at
1 for several values of . The results are in complete
agreement with the bounds obtained taking into account constraints on Flavour

DIAGNÓSTICO DE LA EXPERIENCIA INVESTIGATIVA EN LA FACULTAD DE CIENCIAS ECONÓMICAS "UNA REFLEXIÓN ENDÓGENA"
El propósito del estudio es realizar una reflexión sobre el proceso de investigación en la Facultad de Ciencias Económicas de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua. La información estadística se recolecto aplicando un cuestionario dirigido a una muestra de profesores de las distintas escuelas trabajando a tiempo completo durante el año 1999. Se ha encontrado que el proceso de investigación no es algo simple y que no se puede hacer generalizaciones sobre la inexistencia de una cultura de investigación en la facultad de ciencias económicas. A lo sumo podemos aseverar que la investigación es fragmentada e irrelevante en algunos casos. Por lo tanto, se requiere reconstruir nuestro quehacer docente investigativo hacia la investigación fortaleciendo una instancia o entidad que organiza el proceso de investigación en conjunto con un esquema de incentivos a la investigación. Se requiere una plataforma en forma de seminarios y foros de debate que permita a los docentes evacuar sus ideas al respecto al tema de investigación a fin de crear sinergia interna. La modalidad de investigación vía la monografía es clave para el proceso, sin embargo, la modalidad de monografías como forma de trabajo científico debe estar en relación a una línea de investigación
