Proton Polarization Shifts in Electronic and Muonic Hydrogen
The contribution of virtual excitations to the energy levels of electronic
and muonic hydrogen is investigated combining a model-independent approach for
the main part with quark model predictions for the remaining corrections.
Precise values for the polarization shifts are obtained in the long-wavelength
dipole approximation by numerically integrating over measured total
photoabsorption cross sections. These unretarded results are considerably
reduced by including retardation effects in an approximate way since the
average momentum transfer (together with the mean excitation energy) turns out
to be larger than usually assumed. Transverse and seagull contributions are
estimated in a simple harmonic oscillator quark model and found to be
non-negligible. Possible uncertainties and improvements of the final results
are discussed.Comment: 8 pages, LATEX, no figures, discussion improved and references

Time Reversal Violation from the entangled B0-antiB0 system
We discuss the concepts and methodology to implement an experiment probing
directly Time Reversal (T) non-invariance, without any experimental connection
to CP violation, by the exchange of "in" and "out" states. The idea relies on
the B0-antiB0 entanglement and decay time information available at B factories.
The flavor or CP tag of the state of the still living neutral meson by the
first decay of its orthogonal partner overcomes the problem of irreversibility
for unstable systems, which prevents direct tests of T with incoherent particle
states. T violation in the time evolution between the two decays means
experimentally a difference between the intensities for the time-ordered (l^+
X, J/psi K_S) and (J/psi K_L, l^- X) decays, and three other independent
asymmetries. The proposed strategy has been applied to simulated data samples
of similar size and features to those currently available, from which we
estimate the significance of the expected discovery to reach many standard
deviations.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures, 6 table
Top quark tensor couplings
We compute the real and imaginary parts of the one-loop electroweak
contributions to the left and right tensorial anomalous couplings of the
vertex in the Standard Model (SM). For both tensorial couplings we find that
the real part of the electroweak SM correction is close to 10 of the leading
contribution given by the QCD gluon exchange. We also find that the electroweak
real and imaginary parts for the anomalous right coupling are almost of the
same order of magnitude. The one loop SM prediction for the real part of the
left coupling is close to the 3 discovery limit derived from
. Besides, taking into account that the predictions of
new physics interactions are also at the level of a few percents when compared
with the one loop QCD gluon exchange, these electroweak corrections should be
taken into account in order to disentangle new physics effects from the
standard ones. These anomalous tensorial couplings of the top quark will be
investigated at the LHC in the near future where sensitivity to these
contributions may be achieved.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figure
Hard Corrections as a Probe of the Symmetry Breaking Sector
Non-decoupling effects related to a large affecting non-oblique
radiative corrections in vertices () and boxes (- mixing
and ) are very sensitive to the particular mechanism of spontaneous
symmetry breaking. We analyze these corrections in the framework of a chiral
electroweak standard model and find that there is only one operator in the
effective lagrangian which modifies the longitudinal part of the boson
without touching the oblique corrections. The inclusion of this operator
affects the vertex, the - mixing and the CP-violating
parameter , generating interesting correlations among the hard
corrections to these observables, for example, the maximum
vertex correction allowed by low energy physics is about one
percent.Comment: LaTex, 8 pages, 1 postscript figure include
TAU-PAIR PRODUCTION VIA PHOTON-PHOTON COLLISIONS AT LEP
We point out that the cross-section for the process at LEP is large enough to allow for a study of the anomalous
electromagnetic couplings of the lepton. We show that the present bounds
on the magnetic dipole moment can be improved and that competitive bounds can
be obtained for the electric dipole moment using the data taken from 1992 to
1994. Finally, we briefly discuss the improvements that can be obtained at LEP
II.Comment: 9 pages, latex, 2 figure
Constraints on the parameters of the Left Right Mirror Model
We study some phenomenological constraints on the parameters of a left right
model with mirror fermions (LRMM) that solves the strong CP problem. In
particular, we evaluate the contribution of mirror neutrinos to the invisible Z
decay width (\Gamma_Z^{inv}), and we find that the present experimental value
on \Gamma_Z^{inv}, can be used to place an upper bound on the Z-Z' mixing angle
that is consistent with limits obtained previously from other low-energy
observables. In this model the charged fermions that correspond to the standard
model (SM) mix with its mirror counterparts. This mixing, simultaneously with
the Z-Z' one, leads to modifications of the \Gamma(Z --> f \bar{f}) decay
width. By comparing with LEP data, we obtain bounds on the standard-mirror
lepton mixing angles. We also find that the bottom quark mixing parameters can
be chosen to fit the experimental values of R_b, and the resulting values for
the Z-Z' mixing angle do not agree with previous bounds. However, this
disagreement disappears if one takes the more recent ALEPH data.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, REVTe
Sum rule for the backward spin polarizability of the nucleon from a backward dispersion relation
A new sum rule for , the backward spin polarizability of the
nucleon, is derived from a backward-angle dispersion relation. Taking into
account single- and multi-pion photoproduction in the s-channel up to the
energy 1.5 GeV and resonances in the t-channel with mass below 1.5 GeV, it is
found for the proton and neutron that = -39.5 +/- 2.4 and
= 52.5 +/- 2.4, respectively, in units of 10^{-4} fm^4.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, revtex. Submitted to Phys. Lett.
Phenomenology of neutral heavy leptons
We continue our previous work on the flavour-conserving leptonic decays of
the Z boson with neutral heavy leptons (NHL's) in the loops by considering box,
vertex, and self-energy diagrams for the muon decay. By inclusion of these
loops (they contribute to the input parameter M_W) we can probe the full
parameter space spanned by the so-called flavour-conserving mixing parameters
ee_(mix), \mu\mu_(mix), \tau\tau_(mix) in a superstring-inspired model of
neutrino mass. We compare the results of our analysis with the existing work in
this field and conclude that flavour-conserving decays have certain advantages
over traditionally considered flavour-violating ones.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. D, 30 pages, 9 figures (ps), REVTE
Generalized polarizabilities and the spin-averaged amplitude in virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon
We discuss the low-energy behavior of the spin-averaged amplitude of virtual
Compton scattering (VCS) off a nucleon.
Based on gauge invariance, Lorentz invariance and the discrete symmetries, it
is shown that to first order in the frequency of the final real photon only two
generalized polarizabilities appear.
Different low-energy expansion schemes are discussed and put into
perspective.Comment: 13 pages, 1 postscript figure, Revtex using eps
