Transient analysis techniques in performing impact and crash dynamic studies
Because of the emphasis being placed on crashworthiness as a design requirement, increasing demands are being made by various organizations to analyze a wide range of complex structures that must perform safely when subjected to severe impact loads, such as those generated in a crash event. The ultimate goal of crashworthiness design and analysis is to produce vehicles with the ability to reduce the dynamic forces experienced by the occupants to specified levels, while maintaining a survivable envelope around them during a specified crash event. DYCAST is a nonlinear structural dynamic finite element computer code that started from the plans systems of a finite element program for static nonlinear structural analysis. DYCAST: A finite element program for the crash analysis of structures
DYCAST is a nonlinear structural dynamic finite element computer code developed for crash simulation. The element library contains stringers, beams, membrane skin triangles, plate bending triangles and spring elements. Changing stiffnesses in the structure are accounted for by plasticity and very large deflections. Material nonlinearities are accommodated by one of three options: elastic-perfectly plastic, elastic-linear hardening plastic, or elastic-nonlinear hardening plastic of the Ramberg-Osgood type. Geometric nonlinearities are handled in an updated Lagrangian formulation by reforming the structure into its deformed shape after small time increments while accumulating deformations, strains, and forces. The nonlinearities due to combined loadings are maintained, and stiffness variation due to structural failures are computed. Numerical time integrators available are fixed-step central difference, modified Adams, Newmark-beta, and Wilson-theta. The last three have a variable time step capability, which is controlled internally by a solution convergence error measure. Other features include: multiple time-load history tables to subject the structure to time dependent loading; gravity loading; initial pitch, roll, yaw, and translation of the structural model with respect to the global system; a bandwidth optimizer as a pre-processor; and deformed plots and graphics as post-processors
Test of a simple and flexible molecule model for alpha-, beta- and gamma-S8 crystals
S8 is the most stable compound of elemental sulfur in solid and liquid
phases, at ambient pressure and below 400K. Three crystalline phases of S8 have
been clearly identified in this range of thermodynamic parameters, although no
calculation of its phase diagram has been performed yet. alpha- and gamma-S8
are orientationally ordered crystals while beta-S8 is measured as
orientationally disordered. In this paper we analyze the phase diagram of S8
crystals, as given by a simple and flexible molecule model, via a series of
molecular dynamics (MD) simulations.
The calculations are performed in the constant pressure- constant temperature
ensemble, using an algorithm that is able to reproduce structural phase

Optical and X-ray Properties of the Swift BAT-detected AGN
The Swift Gamma-Ray Burst satellite has detected a largely unbiased towards
absorption sample of local () AGN, based solely on their
14--195 keV flux. In the first 9 months of the survey, 153 AGN sources were
detected. The X-ray properties in the 0.3--10 keV band have been compiled and
presented based on analyses with XMM-Newton, Chandra, Suzaku, and the Swift XRT
(Winter et al. 2009). Additionally, we have compiled a sub-sample of sources
with medium resolution optical ground-based spectra from the SDSS or our own
observations at KPNO. In this sample of 60 sources, we have classified the
sources using standard emission line diagnostic plots, obtained masses for the
broad line sources through measurement of the broad H emission line, and
measured the [OIII] 5007\AA luminosity of this sample. Based on continuum fits
to the intrinsic absorption features, we have obtained clues about the stellar
populations of the host galaxies. We now present the highlights of our X-ray
and optical studies of this unique sample of local AGNs, including a comparison
of the 2--10 keV and 14--195 keV X-ray luminosities with the [OIII] 5007\AA
luminosity and the implications of our results towards measurements of

Pb-Zn liquid metal diffusion
The Lead-Zinc binary equilibrium system is currently being investigated. Ground based studies of this system were performed to examine the possibility of obtaining a couple which, after diffusion, could be examined continuously along the diffusion axis by quantitative metallography to determine the extent of diffusion. The specimens were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence in the scanning electron microscope to provide exact information on the chemical composition gradient. Two diffusion experiments were run simultaneously in the multipurpose furnace, each in its own isothermal cavity. New Indicators for AGN Power: The Correlation Between [O IV] lambda 25.89 micron and Hard X-ray Luminosity for Nearby Seyfert Galaxies
We have studied the relationship between the [O IV] lambda 25.89 micron
emission line luminosities, obtained from Spitzer spectra, the X-ray continua
in the 2-10 keV band, primarily from ASCA, and the 14-195 keV band obtained
with the SWIFT/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT), for a sample of nearby (z < 0.08)
Seyfert galaxies. For comparison, we have examined the relationship between the
[O III] 5007, the 2-10 keV and the 14-195 keV luminosities for the same set of
objects. We find that both the [O IV] and [O III] luminosities are
well-correlated with the BAT luminosities. On the other hand, the [O III]
luminosities are better-correlated with 2-10 keV luminosities than are those of
[O IV]. When comparing [O IV] and [O III] luminosities for the different types
of galaxies, we find that the Seyfert 2's have significantly lower [O III] to
[O IV] ratios than the Seyfert 1's. We suggest that this is due to more
reddening of the narrow line region (NLR) of the Seyfert 2's. Assuming Galactic
dust to gas ratios, the average amount of extra reddening corresponds to a
hydrogen column density of ~ few times 10^21 cm^-2, which is a small fraction
of the X-ray absorbing columns in the Seyfert 2's. The combined effects of
reddening and the X-ray absorption are the probable reason why the [O III]
versus 2-10 keV correlation is better than the [O IV] versus 2-10 keV, since
the [O IV] emission line is much less affected by extinction. Overall, we find
the [O IV] to be an accurate and truly isotropic indicator of the power of the
AGN. This suggests that it can be useful in deconvolving the contribution of
the AGN and starburst to the spectrum of Compton-thick and/or X-ray weak

Why are so many Nepali women killing themselves? A review of key issues
Background: For decades the maternal mortality in Nepal was the lead cause of death among women, with great improvements in the maternal mortality ratio in the twentieth century the second most common cause has become more prominent. Suicide is now one of the leading causes of death for women of a reproductive age in Nepal. This scoping review brings together the key available literature to identify the causes of suicide among women in Nepal. Methods: Published and unpublished studies and the grey literature published on women and suicide related to Nepal between 2000 and 2014 were searched and included in this review. Results: This review suggested a number of explanations for the high rate of suicide among women including: partner violence, alcoholism and polygamy, the culture of silence, early age marriage and prolonged child bearing and dependency on men for financial security. Conclusion: This paper highlights some challenges and suggests ways forward in the improvement of mental health in Nepal
Stable retrograde orbits around the triple system 2001 SN263
The NEA 2001 SN263 is the target of the ASTER MISSION - First Brazilian Deep
Space Mission. Araujo et al. (2012), characterized the stable regions around
the components of the triple system for the planar and prograde cases. Knowing
that the retrograde orbits are expected to be more stable, here we present a
complementary study. We now considered particles orbiting the components of the
system, in the internal and external regions, with relative inclinations
between , i.e., particles with retrograde
orbits. Our goal is to characterize the stable regions of the system for
retrograde orbits, and then detach a preferred region to place the space probe.
For a space mission, the most interesting regions would be those that are
unstable for the prograde cases, but stable for the retrograde cases. Such
configuration provide a stable region to place the mission probe with a
relative retrograde orbit, and, at the same time, guarantees a region free of
debris since they are expected to have prograde orbits. We found that in fact
the internal and external stable regions significantly increase when compared
to the prograde case. For particles with and , we found
that nearly the whole region around Alpha and Beta remain stable. We then
identified three internal regions and one external region that are very
interesting to place the space probe. We present the stable regions found for
the retrograde case and a discussion on those preferred regions. We also
discuss the effects of resonances of the particles with Beta and Gamma, and the
role of the Kozai mechanism in this scenario. These results help us understand
and characterize the stability of the triple system 2001 SN263 when retrograde
orbits are considered, and provide important parameters to the design of the
