Enhanced error estimator based on a nearly equilibrated moving least squares recovery technique for FEM and XFEM
In this paper a new technique aimed to obtain accurate estimates of the error
in energy norm using a moving least squares (MLS) recovery-based procedure is
presented. We explore the capabilities of a recovery technique based on an
enhanced MLS fitting, which directly provides continuous interpolated fields,
to obtain estimates of the error in energy norm as an alternative to the
superconvergent patch recovery (SPR). Boundary equilibrium is enforced using a
nearest point approach that modifies the MLS functional. Lagrange multipliers
are used to impose a nearly exact satisfaction of the internal equilibrium
equation. The numerical results show the high accuracy of the proposed error
estimator
Uncertainty analysis in environmental radioactivity measurements using the Monte Carlo code MCNP5
High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors are widely used for environmental radioactivity measurements due to their excellent energy resolution. Monte Carlo (MC) codes are a useful tool to complement experimental measurements in calibration procedures at the laboratory. However, the efficiency curve of the detector can vary due to uncertainties associated with measurements. These uncertainties can be classified into some categories: geometrical parameters of the measurement (distance source-detector, volume of the source), properties of the radiation source (radionuclide activity, branching ratio), and detector characteristics (Ge dead layer, active volume, end cap thickness). The Monte Carlo simulation can be also affected by other kind of uncertainties mainly related to cross sections and to the calculation itself. Normally, all these uncertainties are not well known and it is required a deep analysis to determine their effect on the detector efficiency. In this work, the Noether-Wilks formula is used to carry out the uncertainty analysis. A Probability Density Function (PDF) is assigned to each variable involved in the sampling process. The size of the sampling is determined from the characteristics of the tolerance intervals by applying the Noether Wilks formula. Results of the analysis transform the efficiency curve into a region of possible values into the tolerance intervals. Results show a good agreement between experimental measurements and simulations for two different matrices (water and sand).Gallardo Bermell, S.; Querol Vives, A.; Ortiz Moragón, J.; Ródenas Diago, J.; Verdú Martín, GJ.; Villanueva López, JF.
A variety of free radicals are produced in human organism as a consequence of normal cell metabolism. These free radicals are generally removed by endogenous scavengers but also can interact with plasma and tisular lipids causing its peroxidation. It is very difficult to determine the magnitude of the peroxidation and also the first lipidic peroxidation products due to their very short half-life. However the evaluation of the secondary lipidic peroxidation products can be quantitatively determined as well as their degradation products such as aldehydes with high reactivity among them malondialdehyde (MDA) is the most relevant. Among the variety of assays developed to estimate the magnitude of oxidative damage in humans, the most commonly employed is based on the reaction of endogenous malondialdehyde (MDA) with 2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA). This reaction yields very stable cromogenic and fluorogenic MDA-TBA adducts, that are detectable by UV spectrophotometry and fluorimetry. In the present study, a colorimetric method described by ASAKAWA and MATSUSHITA, was optimized to determine the human serum lipoperoxides based on the TBA reaction. The reaction conditions established by these authors were rigorously investigated in order to optimize this procedure. Mainly, changes were introduced relating to the reaction time and the lipoperoxides extraction method.

The Spanish albacore (Thunnus alalunga) surface fishery in the northeastern Atlantic in 2005
The main features of the Spanish albacore (Thunnus alalunga) surface fishery operating during
summer and autumn months of 2005 in the northeast Atlantic and Bay of Biscay waters north of
40ºN parallel are presented in this document. The baitboat fleet increased its yield 30%;
likewise the troll fleet showed an increased catch of 36% respectively to the 2004 yield. Both
fleets increased their nominal fishing effort about 16% in 2005. The size composition of the
catches in 2005 obtained by both fleets showed a high proportion of age 2 derived by both
methods used to age catches: length slicing and age-length keys, which is in agreement with the
high proportion of age 1 present in 2004. However, in the case of age 3, the observed
proportion of the catch at age differs contingent on either method applied to age the catch in
the case of the troll fleet.

Three-dimensional femtosecond laser nanolithography of crystals
Nanostructuring hard optical crystals has so far been exclusively feasible at
their surface, as stress induced crack formation and propagation has rendered
high precision volume processes ineffective. We show that the inner chemical
etching reactivity of a crystal can be enhanced at the nanoscale by more than
five orders of magnitude by means of direct laser writing. The process allows
to produce cm-scale arbitrary three-dimensional nanostructures with 100 nm
feature sizes inside large crystals in absence of brittle fracture. To showcase
the unique potential of the technique, we fabricate photonic structures such as
sub-wavelength diffraction gratings and nanostructured optical waveguides
capable of sustaining sub-wavelength propagating modes inside yttrium aluminum
garnet crystals. This technique could enable the transfer of concepts from
nanophotonics to the fields of solid state lasers and crystal optics.Comment: Submitted Manuscript and Supplementary Informatio
