TrkB signaling is required for postnatal survival of CNS neurons and protects hippocampal and motor neurons from axotomy-induced cell death

Newborn mice carrying targeted mutations in genes encoding neurotrophins or their signaling Trk receptors display severe neuronal deficits in the peripheral nervous system but not in the CNS. In this study, we show that trkB (¿/¿) mice have a significant increase in apoptotic cell death in different regions of the brain during early postnatal life. The most affected region in the brain is the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, although elevated levels of pyknotic nuclei were also detected in cortical layers II and III and V and VI, the striatum, and the thalamus. Furthermore, axotomized hippocampal and motor neurons of trkB (¿/¿) mice have significantly lower survival rates than those of wild-type littermates. These results suggest that neurotrophin signaling through TrkB receptors plays a role in the survival of CNS neurons during postnatal development. Moreover, they indicate that TrkB receptor signaling protects subpopulations of CNS neurons from injury- and axotomy-induced cell death

First ground penetrating radar survey on Monte Perdido glacier (Pyrenees)

Producción CientíficaThe project “The Monte Perdido Glacier: Monitoring the glacial dynamic and the associated cryospheric processes as indicators of global change” (National Park´s 2013 Fund) aims to study the recent dynamic and degradation of this ice mass, using geomatic and geophysical techniques in order to estimate thickness and potential volumetric variations. We present the first ground penetrating radar survey, carried out on the northwest section of the lower Monte Perdido Glacier. The survey was conducted along a 270 m transect, using three antennas of different frequencies -500, 200 and 50 MHz- that enabled us to study the glacier´s structure at various maximum depths and spatial resolutions. Feasibility of recycling CDW as raw material in gypsum composites

On average, Europe generates around 890 million tonnes of Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) per year and only 50% of this CDW is recycled. This is far from the objectives determined in the European Directive for 2020 and aware of this situation, the European Countries are implementing national policies to prevent the waste that can be avoidable and to promote measures to increase recycling and recovering. The Revival of the Beard from the Artistic and Visual Practices

The main aim of this research is to develop a critical analysis on the beard boom in the last 10th western society, based on the study of various artistic and visual practices stablished on this corporal attribute. From an analytical and comparative methodological perspective, we have contrasted a selection of artistic proposals starting from the contributions of masculinity studies, and various publications that have recently addressed this issue, delving into the construction process and the codes of representation of the hegemonic masculinity in our culture. The results from this confrontation have allowed us to verify the capacities of artistic and visual practices to address the presence of facial hair as one of the favorite anatomical marks in the western and patriarchal social imaginary to embody, represent, consolidate and differentiate the privileged model of traditional masculinity. And, on the other, understand its resurgence as a symptom of the strengthening of emerging conservative masculinities in our days. Este texto tiene como objetivo desarrollar un análisis crítico sobre el auge de la barba en la última década en la sociedad occidental, a partir del estudio de diversas prácticas artísticas y visuales realizadas en torno a este atributo corporal. Desde una perspectiva metodológica analítica y comparativa, hemos contrastado una selección de propuestas artísticas con las aportaciones provenientes de los Estudios de la masculinidad y de las diversas publicaciones que han abordado esta temática recientemente, profundizando en el proceso de construcción y en los códigos de representación de la masculinidad hegemónica en nuestra cultura. Los resultados alcanzados de esta confrontación nos han permitido, por un lado, comprobar las capacidades de las prácticas artísticas y visuales para abordar la presencia del vello facial como una de las marcas anatómicas predilectas en el imaginario social occidental y patriarcal para encarnar, representar, afianzar y diferenciar el modelo privilegiado de la masculinidad tradicional. Las exigencias normativas de la masculinidad hegemónica en la actualidad: Un estudio desde las prácticas artísticas

The goal of this text is to develop a critical analysis of the required guidelines which hegemonic masculinity demand for males in order for them to be considered a man in contemporary society. These guidelines are still pointing out, questioning and intervening in current artistic proposals, in spite of the achievements of the traditional masculinity crisis at the end of the twentieth century. A study which will allow us to prove the capacity of art to interfere with the representation of allocated and required attributes of masculinity and, which is even more significant, to prove the persistence of those imperatives nowadays and its empowerment in certain fields, as it will emerge from the artistic proposals to be studied.Este texto tiene como objetivo principal desarrollar un análisis crítico sobre cuáles son las exigencias normativas demandadas por el modelo de masculinidad hegemónico, para ser considerado “un hombre de verdad”, que se siguen señalando, abordando y reflexionando en las propuestas artísticas actuales, a pesar de los logros conseguidos en el cuestionamiento y en la crisis del ideal de la masculinidad tradicional a finales del siglo XX. Para ello, se han localizado y estudiado diversas obras provenientes tanto de proyectos expositivos como de la producción de números artistas que han centrado en esta problemática su línea de investigación, contrastándolas con las aportaciones de expertos/as en esta temática. Un estudio que nos permitirá, por un lado, constatar la capacidad del arte para interferir en la representación de los atributos asignados y exigibles a la masculinidad normativa. Y, por otro, comprobar no sólo la pervivencia de dichos imperativos en la actualidad, sino su fortalecimiento en determinados ámbitos, como dan muestra las propuestas artísticas que estudiaremos
