The age and growth of the Persian Sturgeon, Acipenser persicus, obtained from the Iranian coastal waters of the Caspian Sea, were studied through analysis of the pectoral fin ray section from 180 specimens, ranging in fork length (FL) from 66 to 203 cm. The specimens were obtained from commercial fisheries between October 2008 and June 2010. Interpretation of growth bands in the pectoral fin ray sections was carried out objectively using the direct reading of thin sections and image analysis. The maximum age recorded in this study for the spacimens of Persian Sturgeon was 39 years. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated for females were greater than for males. The estimates of asymptotic length (L∞) and growth coefficient (K) of females were 173.07 cm and 0.1 year -1, respectively and for males 164.33 cm L∞ and 0.08 year -1 K respectively,. Total mortality coefficient (Z) for females and males was estimated to be 0.45 and 0.76 year -1, respectively. This study revealed differences in life history parameters of the Persian Sturgeon compared with those of previous studies, which may be associated with the current increased fishing pressure and degradation of environmental conditions

In this study, the chronic toxic effects of Pb (II) on common carp, Cyprius carpio were investigated using several biomarkers at different levels of biological functions for assessing changes in ecosystem quality. In a bioassay, common carp juveniles were individually exposed to different dose of heavy metal, Pb II (0, 0.45, 0.89, 1.34 mg.l-1) for 28 days. Morphological indices such as hepatosomatic index, condition factor and lipid peroxidation (LPO) level and also the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were measured. These results indicated that there was significant lower condition factor in fish exposed to the highest concentration of Pb (p<0.05). The activity of hepatic antioxidant enzymes (SOD & CAT) and LPO level was significantly elevated after long-term exposure to higher concentration of Pb (p<0.05). Briefly, our findings suggested that common carp exposed to lead, develop oxidative stress, hence long-term exposure to higher concentrations of Pb could seriously affect the health status of fish

Inventory is a large asset owned by the company. Large investments invested in the form of inventory willcause problems related to the cost of organizing where the cost will increase the warehouse costs. Inventoryis very vulnerable to damage, theft, and misappropriation. The inventory accounting system plays animportant role in the arrangement of avoiding the repatriation of the company's wealth, especiallyinventory. Proper and correct accounting treatment of inventory is absolutely necessary. This is becausethe inventory post has a considerable influence in the financial statements, which is in the balance sheetand in determining the price of inventory in the income statement. The problem in the research is how todesign good documents, records, and procedures related to the inventory accounting system ofmerchandise at Usaha Dagang Li Jaya Kupang and how the internal control system prevent the multipositions, mis-recording, and possible misappropriation of inventory of at Usaha Dagang Li JayaKupang. The results showed that the inventory accounting information system at UD. Li Jaya hasweaknesses in terms of inventory recording undone because of the limited educational background of theexisting workforce and in terms of its internal controls that have not been effective. The obstacles faced byUD. Li Jaya Kupang is the absence of computerized administration in the recording system, so that isno recording at all in the warehouse section. The inventory accounting information system at UD LiJaya Kupang must have its own recording administration, so that employees do not record bythemshelves. An application of hybrid life cycle assessment as a decision support framework for green supply chains

    Get PDF
In an effort to achieve sustainable operations, green supply chain management has become an important area for firms to concentrate on due to its inherent involvement with all the processes that provide foundations to successful business. Modelling methodologies of product supply chain environmental assessment are usually guided by the principles of life cycle assessment (LCA). However, a review of the extant literature suggests that LCA techniques suffer from a wide range of limitations that prevent a wider application in real-world contexts; hence, they need to be incorporated within decision support frameworks to aid environmental sustainability strategies. Thus, this paper contributes in understanding and overcoming the dichotomy between LCA model development and the emerging practical implementation to inform carbon emissions mitigation strategies within supply chains. Therefore, the paper provides both theoretical insights and a practical application to inform the process of adopting a decision support framework based on a LCA methodology in a real-world scenario. The supply chain of a product from the steel industry is considered to evaluate its environmental impact and carbon ‘hotspots’. The study helps understanding how operational strategies geared towards environmental sustainability can be informed using knowledge and information generated from supply chain environmental assessments, and for highlighting inherent challenges in this process

This study examines gossip in two different ethnicities living in the city of Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara province namely Sabu andRote tribes. This study specifically answers two main questions. First, what kind of gossip is usually discussed by women from both ethnicities.Second, which ethnic group produces more negative impacts from this social conversation. In addition to two questions above, several otherelements were also analyzed in this study such as atmosphere, context, participants, age, ethnicity, education, social distance, and language use.The study employed observation and interviews method in collecting the data. The interview was done by applying close ended questionnaire. Atotal of 36 participants were included as samples and subjects in this study. The result of this study indicates that both ethnicities have a commontopic when gossiping. For example, family problems, recipes, parenting, infidelity and others. Although two ethnicities are equally involved andexperiencing the negative effects of this social conversation, women from the Sabu tribe have a higher level of involvement in terms of verbaland physical fights

Modulation of tumor angiogenesis by conditional expression of fibroblast growth factor-2 affects early but not established tumors.

Fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF2) is a pleiotropic heparin-binding growth factor endowed with a potent angiogenic activity in vitro and in vivo. To investigate the impact of the modulation of FGF2 expression on the neovascularization at different stages of tumor growth, we generated stable transfectants (Tet-FGF2) from the human endometrial adenocarcinoma HEC-1-B cell line in which FGF2 expression is under the control of the tetracycline-responsive promoter (Tet-off system). After transfection, independent clones were obtained in which FGF2 mRNA and protein were up-regulated compared with parental cells. Also, the conditioned medium of Tet-FGF2 transfectants caused proliferation, urokinase-type plasminogen activator up-regulation, migration, and sprouting of cultured endothelial cells. A 3-day treatment of Tet-FGF2 cell cultures with tetracycline abolished FGF2 overexpression and the biological activity of the conditioned medium without affecting their proliferative capacity. Tet-FGF2 cells formed tumors when nude mice received s.c. injections. The administration of 2.0 mg/ml tetracycline in the drinking water before cell transplantation, continued throughout the whole experiment, inhibited FGF2 expression in Tet-FGF2 tumor lesions. This was paralleled by a significant decrease in the rate of tumor growth and vascularization to values similar to those observed in lesions generated by parental HEC-1-B cells. Tetracycline administration 20 days after tumor cell implant, although equally effective in reducing FGF2 expression and inhibiting tumor vascularity, only minimally impaired the growth of established Tet-FGF2 tumors. The results indicate that FGF2 expression deeply affects the initial tumor growth and neovascularization of HEC-1-B human endometrial adenocarcinoma in nude mice. On the contrary, the growth of established tumors appears to be independent of the inhibition of FGF2 expression and decreased vascular density. The possibility that a significant reduction of angiogenesis may not affect the progression of large tumors points to the use of antiangiogenic therapy in early tumor stage

Due to its depleting importance, scholarly publishing grew unpopular in a weak market where business is done in a conventional way. University Press uses e-marketing to promote academic publication. As a widely accepted strategy, e-marketing has been used by many organizations around the world to market their daily businesses. Various studies have shown e-marketing strategy is capable of providing a platform for the business enterprise. The research design uses quantitative methods which data was drawn from questionnaires responded by 142 respondents from 15 public universities in Malaysia. The data were analyzed based on descriptive and inferential statistical analysis using four types of statistical analysis method: the factor analysis, descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation test and multiple regression analysis. The results of the study suggested that publication policies and practices, as well as e-marketing, are the main contributors towards the performance of scholarly publishing in public universitie
