Age and origin of fluorapatite-rich dyke from Baranec Mt. (Tatra Mts., Western Carpathians) : a key to understanding of the post-orogenic processes and element mobility
On the southeastern slope of the Baranec Mount in the Western Tatra Mountains (Slovakia) an apatite-rich pegmatite-like segregation was found in the subvertical fault zone cutting metapelitic rocks. Two zones: felsic (F) and mafic (M) were found, differing in mineral assemblages and consequently in chemistry. Fluorapatite crystals yield a LA-ICP-MS U-Pb age of 328.6 ± 2.4 Ma. A temperature decrease from 634 °C to 454 °C at a pressure around 500 to 400 MPa with oxygen fugacity increasing during crystallization are the possible conditions for formation of the pegmatite-like segregation, while secondary alterations took place in the temperature range of 340-320 °C. The Sr-Nd isotope composition of both apatite and whole rock point toward a crustal origin of the dike in question, suggesting partial melting of (P, F, H2O)-rich metasedimentary rocks during prolonged decompression of the Tatra Massif. The original partial melt (felsic component) was mixed with an external (F, H2O)-rich fluid, carrying Fe and Mg fluxed from more mafic metapelites and crystallizing as biotite and epidote in the mafic component of the dyke
Spin-Charge Coupling in lightly doped NdCeCuO
We use neutron scattering to study the influence of a magnetic field on spin
structures of NdCuO. On cooling from room temperature, NdCuO
goes through a series of antiferromagnetic (AF) phase transitions with
different noncollinear spin structures. While a c-axis aligned magnetic field
does not alter the basic zero-field noncollinear spin structures, a field
parallel to the CuO plane can transform the noncollinear structure to a
collinear one ("spin-flop" transition), induce magnetic disorder along the
c-axis, and cause hysteresis in the AF phase transitions. By comparing these
results directly to the magnetoresistance (MR) measurements of
NdCeCuO, which has essentially the same AF structures
as NdCuO, we find that a magnetic-field-induced spin-flop transition,
AF phase hysteresis, and spin c-axis disorder all affect the transport
properties of the material. Our results thus provide direct evidence for the
existence of a strong spin-charge coupling in electron-doped copper oxides.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figure
3D histopathology of stenotic aortic valve cusps using ex vivo microfocus computed tomography
BackgroundCalcific aortic stenosis (AS) is the most prevalent heart valve disease in developed countries. The aortic valve cusps progressively thicken and the valve does not open fully due to the presence of calcifications. In vivo imaging, usually used for diagnosis, does not allow the visualization of the microstructural changes associated with AS.MethodsEx vivo high-resolution microfocus computed tomography (microCT) was used to quantitatively describe the microstructure of calcified aortic valve cusps in full 3D. As case study in our work, this quantitative analysis was applied to normal-flow low-gradient severe AS (NF-LG-SAS), for which the medical prognostic is still highly debated in the current literature, and high-gradient severe AS (HG-SAS).ResultsThe volume proportion of calcification, the size and number of calcified particles and their density composition was quantified. A new size-based classification considering small-sized particles that are not detected with in vivo imaging was defined for macro-, meso- and microscale calcifications. Volume and thickness of aortic valve cusps, including the complete thickness distribution, were also determined. Moreover, changes in the cusp soft tissues were also visualized with microCT and confirmed by scanning electron microscopy images of the same sample. NF-LG-SAS cusps contained lower relative amount of calcifications than HG-SAS. Moreover, the number and size of calcified objects and the volume and thickness of the cusps were also lower in NF-LG-SAS cusps than in HG-SAS.ConclusionsThe application of high-resolution ex vivo microCT to stenotic aortic valve cusps provided a quantitative description of the general structure of the cusps and of the calcifications present in the cusp soft tissues. This detailed description could help in the future to better understand the mechanisms of AS
Neural processing of criticism and positive comments from relatives in individuals with schizotypal personality traits
Objectives. High negative expressed emotion by family members towards schizophrenia patients increases the risk of subsequent relapse. The study aimed to determine whether individuals with high schizotypy (HS) and low schizotypy (LS) would differ in activation of brain areas involved in cognitive control when listening to relative criticism
Status Of The FAIR Synchrotron Projects SIS18 And SIS100
A large fraction of the program to upgrade the existingheavy ion synchrotron SIS18 as injector for the FAIR synchrotron SIS100 has been successfully completed. With the achieved technical status, a major increase of theaccelerated number of heavy ions could be reached. Thenow available performance especially demonstrates thefeasibility of high intensity beams of medium charge stateheavy ions with a sufficient control of the dynamicvacuum and connected charge exchange loss. Two furtherupgrade measures, the installation of additional magneticalloy (MA) acceleration cavities and the exchange of themain dipole power converter, are presently beingimplemented. For the FAIR synchrotron SIS100, theprocurement of all major components with longproduction times has been started. With the delivery andtesting of several pre-series components, the phase ofoutstanding technical reserach and developments could becompleted and the readiness for series productionachieved
parMERASA Multi-Core Execution of Parallelised Hard Real-Time Applications Supporting Analysability
International audienceEngineers who design hard real-time embedded systems express a need for several times the performance available today while keeping safety as major criterion. A breakthrough in performance is expected by parallelizing hard real-time applications and running them on an embedded multi-core processor, which enables combining the requirements for high-performance with timing-predictable execution. parMERASA will provide a timing analyzable system of parallel hard real-time applications running on a scalable multicore processor. parMERASA goes one step beyond mixed criticality demands: It targets future complex control algorithms by parallelizing hard real-time programs to run on predictable multi-/many-core processors. We aim to achieve a breakthrough in techniques for parallelization of industrial hard real-time programs, provide hard real-time support in system software, WCET analysis and verification tools for multi-cores, and techniques for predictable multi-core designs with up to 64 cores
