    First electron beam polarization measurements with a Compton polarimeter at Jefferson Laboratory

    A Compton polarimeter has been installed in Hall A at Jefferson Laboratory. This letter reports on the first electron beam polarization measurements performed during the HAPPEX experiment at an electron energy of 3.3 GeV and an average current of 40 μ\muA. The heart of this device is a Fabry-Perot cavity which increased the luminosity for Compton scattering in the interaction region so much that a 1.4% statistical accuracy could be obtained within one hour, with a 3.3% total error

    New Observables for Parity Violation in Atoms: Energy Shifts in External Electric Fields

    We consider hydrogen-like atoms in unstable levels of principal quantum number n=2, confined to a finite size region in a non-homogeneous electric field carrying handedness. The interplay between the internal degrees of freedom of the atoms and the external ones of their c.m. motion can produce P-odd contributions to the eigenenergies. The nominal order of such shifts is 10^-8 Hz. Typically such energy shifts depend linearly on the small P-violation parameters delta_i similarequal 10^-12 (i=1,2), essentially the ratios of the P-violating mixing matrix elements of the 2S and 2P states over the Lamb shift, with i=1 (i=2) corresponding to the nuclear spin independent (dependent) term. We show how such energy shifts can be enhanced by a factor of similarequal 10^6 in a resonance like way for special field configurations where a crossing of unstable levels occurs, leading to P-violating effects proportional to squareroot{delta_i}. Measurements of such effects can give information concerning the ``spin crisis'' of the nucleons.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, LaTeX, submitted to Phys. Lett.

    Measurement of GEp/GMp in ep -> ep to Q2 = 5.6 GeV2

    The ratio of the electric and magnetic form factors of the proton, GEp/GMp, was measured at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) using the recoil polarization technique. The ratio of the form factors is directly proportional to the ratio of the transverse to longitudinal components of the polarization of the recoil proton in the elastic epep\vec ep \to e\vec p reaction. The new data presented in this article span the range 3.5 < Q2 < 5.6 GeV2 and are well described by a linear Q2 fit.     Precision Measurement of the Neutron Spin Asymmetry A1nA_1^n and Spin-Flavor Decomposition in the Valence Quark Region

    We have measured the neutron spin asymmetry A1nA_1^n with high precision at three kinematics in the deep inelastic region at x=0.33x=0.33, 0.47 and 0.60, and Q2=2.7Q^2=2.7, 3.5 and 4.8 (GeV/c)2^2, respectively. Our results unambiguously show, for the first time, that A1nA_1^n crosses zero around x=0.47x=0.47 and becomes significantly positive at x=0.60x=0.60. Combined with the world proton data, polarized quark distributions were extracted. Our results, in general, agree with relativistic constituent quark models and with perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) analyses based on the earlier data.     Recoil Polarization for Delta Excitation in Pion Electroproduction

    We measured angular distributions of recoil-polarization response functions for neutral pion electroproduction for W=1.23 GeV at Q^2=1.0 (GeV/c)^2, obtaining 14 separated response functions plus 2 Rosenbluth combinations; of these, 12 have been observed for the first time. Dynamical models do not describe quantities governed by imaginary parts of interference products well, indicating the need for adjusting magnitudes and phases for nonresonant amplitudes. We performed a nearly model-independent multipole analysis and obtained values for Re(S1+/M1+)=-(6.84+/-0.15)% and Re(E1+/M1+)=-(2.91+/-0.19)% that are distinctly different from those from the traditional Legendre analysis based upon M1+ dominance and sp truncation.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, for PR

    Spin Structure of the Proton from Polarized Inclusive Deep-Inelastic Muon-Proton Scattering

    We have measured the spin-dependent structure function g1pg_1^p in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of polarized muons off polarized protons, in the kinematic range 0.003<x<0.70.003 < x < 0.7 and 1GeV2<Q2<60GeV21 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 60 GeV^2. A next-to-leading order QCD analysis is used to evolve the measured g1p(x,Q2)g_1^p(x,Q^2) to a fixed Q02Q^2_0. The first moment of g1pg_1^p at Q02=10GeV2Q^2_0 = 10 GeV^2 is Γp=0.136±0.013(stat.)±0.009(syst.)±0.005(evol.)\Gamma^p = 0.136\pm 0.013(stat.) \pm 0.009(syst.)\pm 0.005(evol.). This result is below the prediction of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule by more than two standard deviations. The singlet axial charge a0a_0 is found to be 0.28±0.160.28 \pm 0.16. In the Adler-Bardeen factorization scheme, Δg2\Delta g \simeq 2 is required to bring ΔΣ\Delta \Sigma in agreement with the Quark-Parton Model.     Precision Measurement of the Neutron Spin Asymmetries and Spin-dependent Structure Functions in the Valence Quark Region

    We report on measurements of the neutron spin asymmetries A1,2nA_{1,2}^n and polarized structure functions g1,2ng_{1,2}^n at three kinematics in the deep inelastic region, with x=0.33x=0.33, 0.47 and 0.60 and Q2=2.7Q^2=2.7, 3.5 and 4.8 (GeV/c)2^2, respectively. These measurements were performed using a 5.7 GeV longitudinally-polarized electron beam and a polarized 3^3He target. The results for A1nA_1^n and g1ng_1^n at x=0.33x=0.33 are consistent with previous world data and, at the two higher xx points, have improved the precision of the world data by about an order of magnitude. The new A1nA_1^n data show a zero crossing around x=0.47x=0.47 and the value at x=0.60x=0.60 is significantly positive. These results agree with a next-to-leading order QCD analysis of previous world data. The trend of data at high xx agrees with constituent quark model predictions but disagrees with that from leading-order perturbative QCD (pQCD) assuming hadron helicity conservation. Results for A2nA_2^n and g2ng_2^n have a precision comparable to the best world data in this kinematic region. Combined with previous world data, the moment d2nd_2^n was evaluated and the new result has improved the precision of this quantity by about a factor of two. When combined with the world proton data, polarized quark distribution functions were extracted from the new g1n/F1ng_1^n/F_1^n values based on the quark parton model. While results for Δu/u\Delta u/u agree well with predictions from various models, results for Δd/d\Delta d/d disagree with the leading-order pQCD prediction when hadron helicity conservation is imposed.Comment: A typing error in A_\parallel(3He) at x=0.47 in Table VII of Phys.
