Cohesive properties of alkali halides
We calculate cohesive properties of LiF, NaF, KF, LiCl, NaCl, and KCl with
ab-initio quantum chemical methods. The coupled-cluster approach is used to
correct the Hartree-Fock crystal results for correlations and to systematically
improve cohesive energies, lattice constants and bulk moduli. After inclusion
of correlations, we recover 95-98 % of the total cohesive energies. The lattice
constants deviate from experiment by at most 1.1 %, bulk moduli by at most 8 %.
We also find good agreement for spectroscopic properties of the corresponding

Transfer Functions for Protein Signal Transduction: Application to a Model of Striatal Neural Plasticity
We present a novel formulation for biochemical reaction networks in the
context of signal transduction. The model consists of input-output transfer
functions, which are derived from differential equations, using stable
equilibria. We select a set of 'source' species, which receive input signals.
Signals are transmitted to all other species in the system (the 'target'
species) with a specific delay and transmission strength. The delay is computed
as the maximal reaction time until a stable equilibrium for the target species
is reached, in the context of all other reactions in the system. The
transmission strength is the concentration change of the target species. The
computed input-output transfer functions can be stored in a matrix, fitted with
parameters, and recalled to build discrete dynamical models. By separating
reaction time and concentration we can greatly simplify the model,
circumventing typical problems of complex dynamical systems. The transfer
function transformation can be applied to mass-action kinetic models of signal
transduction. The paper shows that this approach yields significant insight,
while remaining an executable dynamical model for signal transduction. In
particular we can deconstruct the complex system into local transfer functions
between individual species. As an example, we examine modularity and signal
integration using a published model of striatal neural plasticity. The modules
that emerge correspond to a known biological distinction between
calcium-dependent and cAMP-dependent pathways. We also found that overall
interconnectedness depends on the magnitude of input, with high connectivity at
low input and less connectivity at moderate to high input. This general result,
which directly follows from the properties of individual transfer functions,
contradicts notions of ubiquitous complexity by showing input-dependent signal

Does coevolution promote species richness in parasitic cuckoos?
Why some lineages have diversified into larger numbers of species than others is a fundamental but still relatively poorly understood aspect of the evolutionary process. Coevolution has been recognized as a potentially important engine of speciation, but has rarely been tested in a comparative framework. We use a comparative approach based on a complete phylogeny of all living cuckoos to test whether parasite–host coevolution is associated with patterns of cuckoo species richness. There are no clear differences between parental and parasitic cuckoos in the number of species per genus. However, a cladogenesis test shows that brood parasitism is associated with both significantly higher speciation and extinction rates. Furthermore, subspecies diversification rate estimates were over twice as high in parasitic cuckoos as in parental cuckoos. Among parasitic cuckoos, there is marked variation in the severity of the detrimental effects on host fitness; chicks of some cuckoo species are raised alongside the young of the host and others are more virulent, with the cuckoo chick ejecting or killing the eggs/young of the host. We show that cuckoos with a more virulent parasitic strategy have more recognized subspecies. In addition, cuckoo species with more recognized subspecies have more hosts. These results hold after controlling for confounding geographical effects such as range size and isolation in archipelagos. Although the power of our analyses is limited by the fact that brood parasitism evolved independently only three times in cuckoos, our results suggest that coevolutionary arms races with hosts have contributed to higher speciation and extinction rates in parasitic cuckoos
Correlation effects in MgO and CaO: Cohesive energies and lattice constants
A recently proposed computational scheme based on local increments has been
applied to the calculation of correlation contributions to the cohesive energy
of the CaO crystal. Using ab-initio quantum chemical methods for evaluating
individual increments, we obtain 80% of the difference between the experimental
and Hartree-Fock cohesive energies. Lattice constants corrected for correlation
effects deviate by less than 1% from experimental values, in the case of MgO

Biogeochemical signatures in the lichen Hypogymnia physodes in the mid Urals
Abstract Multi-element content and uranium (U) isotopes were investigated in the lichen Hypogymnia physodes (native and transplants) sampled across a 60-km transect, centred on Karabash smelter town, from Turgoyak Lake (SW) to Kyshtym (NE) to investigate the origin of U. Kyshtym was the site of a major nuclear accident in 1957. 234 U/ 238 U activity ratios in native thalli sampled during July 2001 were within the natural isotopic ratio in minerals. Uranium/thorium (U/Th) ratios were higher in native thalli towards the NE (average 0.73) than those in the SW (average 0.57). Element signatures in native thalli and transplants suggest U was derived from fossil fuel combustion from Karabash and sources lying further to the east. Systematic and significant U enrichment indicative of a nuclear fuel cycle source was not detected in any sample. Element signatures in epiphytic lichen transplants and native thalli provide a powerful method to evaluate U deposition
Radio Frequency Spectra of 388 Bright 74 MHz Sources
As a service to the community, we have compiled radio frequency spectra from
the literature for all sources within the VLA Low Frequency Sky Survey (VLSS)
that are brighter than 15 Jy at 74 MHz. Over 160 references were used to
maximize the amount of spectral data used in the compilation of the spectra,
while also taking care to determine the corrections needed to put the flux
densities from all reference on the same absolute flux density scale. With the
new VLSS data, we are able to vastly improve upon previous efforts to compile
spectra of bright radio sources to frequencies below 100 MHz because (1) the
VLSS flux densities are more reliable than those from some previous low
frequency surveys and (2) the VLSS covers a much larger area of the sky
(declination >-30 deg.) than many other low frequency surveys (e.g., the 8C
survey). In this paper, we discuss how the spectra were constructed and how
parameters quantifying the shapes of the spectra were derived. Both the spectra
and the shape parameters are made available here to assist in the calibration
of observations made with current and future low frequency radio facilities.Comment: Accepted to ApJ
Genetic changes that increase 5-hydroxymethyl furfural resistance in ethanol-producing Escherichia coli LY180
The ability of a biocatalyst to tolerate furan inhibitors present in hemicellulose hydrolysates is important for the production of renewable chemicals. This study shows EMFR9, a furfural-tolerant mutant of ethanologenic E. coli LY180, has also acquired tolerance to 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (5-HMF). The mechanism of action of 5-HMF and furfural appear similar. Furan tolerance results primarily from lower expression of yqhD and dkgA, two furan reductases with a low Km for NADPH. Furan tolerance was also increased by adding plasmids encoding a NADPH/NADH transhydrogenase (pntAB). Together, these results support the hypothesis that the NADPH-dependent reduction of furans by YqhD and DkgA inhibits growth by competing with biosynthesis for this limiting cofactor

The female menstrual cycle does not influence testosterone concentrations in male partners
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The time of ovulation has since long been believed to be concealed to male heterosexual partners. Recent studies have, however, called for revision of this notion. For example, male testosterone concentrations have been shown to increase in response to olfactory ovulation cues, which could be biologically relevant by increasing sexual drive and aggressiveness. However, this phenomenon has not previously been investigated in real-life human settings. We therefore thought it of interest to test the hypothesis that males' salivary testosterone concentrations are influenced by phases of their female partners' menstrual cycle; expecting a testosterone peak at ovulation.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Thirty young, healthy, heterosexual couples were recruited. During the course of 30-40 days, the women registered menses and ovulation, while the men registered sexual activity, physical exercise, alcohol intake and illness (confounders), and obtained daily saliva samples for testosterone measurements. All data, including the registered confounders, were subjected to multiple regression analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In contrast to the hypothesis, the ovulation did not affect the testosterone levels, and the resulting testosterone profile during the menstrual cycle was on the average flat. The specific main hypothesis, that male testosterone levels on the day of ovulation would be higher than day 4 of the cycle, was clearly contradicted by a type II error(β)-analysis (< 14.3% difference in normalized testosterone concentration; β = 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Even though an ovulation-related salivary testosterone peak was observed in individual cases, no significant effect was found on a group level.</p
