    Concussion in University Level Sport: Knowledge and Awareness of Athletes and Coaches.

    Using a cross-sectional survey concussion knowledge was evaluated among forty university-level athletes (n = 20, rugby union players; n = 20, Gaelic football players) and eight experienced team coaches (n = 2, rugby union; n = 2, Gaelic football; n = 1, soccer; n = 1, hockey; n = 1, netball; n = 1, basketball). Levels of knowledge of concussion were high across all participants. Coaches had higher knowledge scores for almost all areas; however, there was evidence of important gaps even in this group. Knowledge was not sufficient in identifying concussion, and when it is safe to return to play following a concussion. Impaired knowledge of how to recognise a concussion, and misunderstanding the need for rest and rehabilitation before return to play presents a hazard to health from second impact and more catastrophic brain injury. We discuss reasons for these guideline misconceptions, and suggest that attitude issues on the significance of concussion may underlie a willingness to want to play with a concussion. This suggests the current education on sport-related concussion needs to be expanded for the appropriate management of university-level contact sports

    Prevalence, Severity and Potential Nutritional Causes of Gastrointestinal Symptoms during a Marathon in Recreational Runners.

    The purpose of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms (GIS) amongst recreational runners during a marathon race, and potential nutritional factors that may contribute. Recreational runners of the 2017 Liverpool (n = 66) and Dublin (n = 30) marathons were recruited. GIS were reported post-marathon and we considered GIS in the 7 days prior to the marathon and during the marathon using the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS). Nutritional intake was recorded using food diaries for the day before the race, morning of the race, and during the race; 43% of participants reported moderate (&ge;4) GIS in the 7 days prior to the marathon and 27% reported moderate symptoms during the marathon with most common symptoms being flatulence (16%) during training, and nausea (8%) during the marathon race. Correlations between all nutritional intake and GIS were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). There were significant correlations between total GIS score (r = 0.510, p < 0.001), upper GIS score (r = 0.346, p = 0.001) and lower GIS score (r = 0.483, p < 0.001) in training and during the marathon. There appears to be a modest prevalence of GIS in recreational runners, in the week prior to a marathon and during marathon running, although there was no association with nutritional intake before or during the race

    Recent advances in clinical probiotic research for sport.

    PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This is a review of the most up-to-date research on the effectiveness of probiotic supplementation for outcomes related to athletes and physical activity. The focus is on clinical research incorporating exercise and/or physically active participants on the nutritional effectiveness of single and multistrain preparations. RECENT FINDINGS: Findings of the included clinical studies support the notion that certain probiotics could play important roles in maintaining normal physiology and energy production during exercise which may lead to performance-improvement and antifatigue effects, improve exercise-induced gastrointestinal symptoms and permeability, stimulate/modulate of the immune system, and improve the ability to digest, absorb, and metabolize macro and micronutrients important to exercise performance and recovery/health status of those physically active. SUMMARY: The current body of literature highlights the specificity of probiotic strain/dose and potential mechanisms of action for application in sport. These novel findings open new areas research, potential use for human health, and reinforce the potential role for probiotic's in exercise performance. While encouraging, more well designed studies of probiotic supplementation in various sport applications are warranted

    Glutamine supplementation reduces markers of intestinal permeability during running in the heat in a dose-dependent manner.

    PURPOSE: To examine the dose-response effects of acute glutamine supplementation on markers of gastrointestinal (GI) permeability, damage and, secondary, subjective symptoms of GI discomfort in response to running in the heat. METHODS: Ten recreationally active males completed a total of four exercise trials; a placebo trial and three glutamine trials at 0.25, 0.5 and 0.9 g kg(-1) of fat-free mass (FFM) consumed 2 h before exercise. Each exercise trial consisted of a 60-min treadmill run at 70% of [Formula: see text] in an environmental chamber set at 30 °C. GI permeability was measured using ratio of lactulose to rhamnose (L:R) in serum. Plasma glutamine and intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP) concentrations were determined pre and post exercise. Subjective GI symptoms were assessed 45 min and 24 h post-exercise. RESULTS: Relative to placebo, L:R was likely lower following 0.25 g kg(-1) (mean difference: - 0.023; ± 0.021) and 0.5 g kg(-1) (- 0.019; ± 0.019) and very likely following 0.9 g kg(- 1) (- 0.034; ± 0.024). GI symptoms were typically low and there was no effect of supplementation. DISCUSSION: Acute oral glutamine consumption attenuates GI permeability relative to placebo even at lower doses of 0.25 g kg(-1), although larger doses may be more effective. It remains unclear if this will lead to reductions in GI symptoms. Athletes competing in the heat may, therefore, benefit from acute glutamine supplementation prior to exercise in order to maintain gastrointestinal integrity

    Carbohydrate for Endurance Athletes in Competition Questionnaire (CEAC-Q): validation of a practical and time-efficient tool for knowledge assessment.

    Purpose: Despite unequivocal evidence demonstrating high carbohydrate (CHO) availability improves endurance performance, athletes often report under-eating CHO during competition. Such findings may be related to a lack of knowledge though currently there are no practical or time-efficient tools to assess CHO knowledge in athletes. Accordingly, we aimed to validate a novel questionnaire to rapidly assess endurance athletes’ knowledge of competition CHO guidelines. Methods: The Carbohydrate for Endurance Athletes in Competition Questionnaire (CEAC-Q) was created by research-active practitioners, based on contemporary guidelines. The CEAC-Q comprised 25 questions divided into 5 subsections (assessing CHO metabolism, CHO loading, pre-event meal, during-competition CHO and recovery) each worth 20 points for a total possible score of 100. Results: A between-group analysis of variance compared scores in three different population groups to assess construct validity: general population (GenP; n = 68), endurance athletes (EA; n = 145), and sports dietitians/nutritionists (SDN; n = 60). Total scores were different (mean ± SD) in all pairwise comparisons of GenP (17 ± 20%), EA (46 ± 19%) and SDN (76 ± 10%, p < 0.001). Subsection scores were also significantly different between the groups, with mean subsection scores of 3.4 ± 4.7% (GenP), 9.2 ± 5.2% (EA) and 15.2 ± 3.5% (SDN, p < 0.001). Test–retest reliability of the total CEAC-Q was determined in EA (r = 0.742, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Taking ~ 10 min to complete, the CEAC-Q is a new psychometrically valid, practical and time-efficient tool for practitioners to assess athletes’ knowledge of CHO for competition and guide subsequent nutrition intervention

    Piezoelectric coefficients of mNA organic nonlinear optical material using synchrotron X-ray multiple diffraction

    Distortions produced in the unit cell of a nonlinear organic crystal under the influence of an applied electric field E are investigated by using synchrotron x-ray multiple diffraction (MD). A typical MD pattern shows numerous (hkl) secondary peaks and the position of each one is basically a function of the unit cell lattice parameters. Thus small changes in any parameter due to a strain produced by E give rise to a corresponding variation in the (hkl) peak position.     Synchrotron-radiation x-ray multiple diffraction applied to the study of electric-field-induced strain in an organic nonlinear optical material

    In this work, distortions produced in the unit cell of a MBANP [(-)-2-(alpha-methylbenzylamino)-5-nitropyridine] nonlinear organic crystal under the influence of an applied electric field, (E) over bar, are investigated by using synchrotron-radiation x-ray multiple diffraction (XRMD). The method is based in the inherent sensitivity of this technique to determine small changes in the crystal lattice, which provide peak position changes in the XRMD pattern (Renninger scan). A typical Renninger scan shows numerous secondary peaks, each one carrying information on one particular direction within the crystal. The (hkl) peak position in the pattern, for a fixed wavelength, is basically a function of the unit cell lattice parameters. Thus small changes in any parameter due to a strain produced by (E) over right arrow give rise to a corresponding variation in the (hkl) peak position and the observed strain is related to the piezoelectric coefficients. The advantage of this method is the possibility of determining more than one piezoelectric coefficient from a single Renninger scan measurement [L. H. Avanci, L. P. Cardoso, S. E. Girdwood, D. Pugh, J. N. Sherwood, and K. J. Roberts, Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 5426 (1998)]. The method has been applied to the MBANP (monoclinic, point group 2) crystal and we were able to determine four piezoelectric coefficients: \d(21)\ = 0.2(1) X 10(-11) CN-1, \d(22)\ = 24.8(3) X 10(-11) CN-1, \d(23)\ = 1.3(1) x 10(-11) CN-1, and \d(25)\ = 5.9(1) X 10(-11) CN-1.     Probiotic supplementation increases carbohydrate metabolism in trained male cyclists: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over trial.

    We hypothesised that probiotic supplementation (PRO) increases the absorption and oxidation of orally ingested maltodextrin during 2h endurance cycling, thereby sparing muscle glycogen for a subsequent time trial (simulating a road race). Measurements were made of lipid and carbohydrate oxidation, plasma metabolites and insulin, gastrointestinal permeability, and subjective symptoms of discomfort. Seven male cyclists were randomized to PRO (bacterial composition given in methods) or placebo (PLC) for four weeks, separated by a 14-day washout period. After each period, cyclists consumed a 10% maltodextrin solution (initial 8 mL·kg-1 bolus and 2 mL·kg-1 every 15 min) while exercising for 2h at 55% Wmax followed by a 100 kJ time trial. PRO resulted in small increases in peak oxidation rates of the ingested maltodextrin (0.84 ± 0.10 vs 0.77 ± 0.09 g·min-1, P = 0.016), and mean total carbohydrate oxidation (2.20 ± 0.25 vs 1.87 ± 0.39 g·min-1, P = 0.038), while fat oxidation was reduced (0.40 ± 0.11 vs 0.55 ± 0.10 g·min-1, P = 0.021) . During PRO small but significant increases were seen in glucose absorption, plasma glucose and insulin concentration and decreases in NEFA and glycerol. Differences between markers of GI damage and permeability and time trial performance were not significant (P > 0.05). In contrast to the hypothesis, PRO led to minimal increases in absorption and oxidation of the ingested maltodextrin and small reductions in fat oxidation, while having no effect on subsequent time trial performance

    Security governance and networks: New theoretical perspectives in transatlantic security

    The end of the Cold War has not only witnessed the rise of new transnational threats such as terrorism, crime, proliferation and civil war; it has also seen the growing role of non-state actors in the provision of security in Europe and North America. Two concepts in particular have been used to describe these transformations: security governance and networks. However, the differences and potential theoretical utility of these two concepts for the study of contemporary security have so far been under-examined. This article seeks to address this gap. It proposes that security governance can help to explain the transformation of Cold War security structures, whereas network analysis is particularly useful for understanding the relations and interactions between public and private actors in the making and implementation of national and international security policies
