Exploration of the faecal microbiota and biomarker discovery in equine grass sickness
Equine grass sickness (EGS) is a frequently fatal disease of horses, responsible for the death of 1-2% of the UK horse population annually. The etiology of this disease is currently uncharacterized although there is evidence it is associated with Clostridium botulinum neurotoxin in the gut. Prevention is currently not possible and ileal biopsy diagnosis is invasive. The aim of this study was to characterize the fecal microbiota and biofluid metabolic profiles of EGS horses, to further understand the mechanisms underlying this disease and identify metabolic biomarkers to aid in diagnosis. Urine, plasma and feces were collected from horses with EGS, matched controls (MC), and hospital controls (HC). Sequencing the16S rRNA gene of the fecal bacterial population of the study horses found a severe dysbiosis in EGS horses, with an increase in Bacteroidetes and a decrease in Firmicutes bacteria. Metabolic profiling by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy found EGS to be associated with the lower urinary excretion of hippurate and 4-cresyl sulfate and higher excretion of O-acetyl carnitine and trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO). The predictive ability of the complete urinary metabolic signature and using the four discriminatory urinary metabolites to classify horses by disease status was assessed using a second (test) set of horses. The urinary metabolome and a combination of the four candidate biomarkers showed promise in aiding the identification of horses with EGS. Characterization of the metabolic shifts associated with EGS offers the potential of a non-invasive test to aid pre-mortem diagnosis
Magnetostrophic MRI in the Earth's Outer Core
We show that a simple, modified version of the Magnetorotational Instability
(MRI) can develop in the outer liquid core of the Earth, in the presence of a
background shear. It requires either thermal wind, or a primary instability,
such as convection, to drive a weak differential rotation within the core. The
force balance in the Earth's core is very unlike classical astrophysical
applications of the MRI (such as gaseous disks around stars). Here, the weak
differential rotation in the Earth core yields an instability by its
constructive interaction with the planet's much larger rotation rate. The
resulting destabilising mechanism is just strong enough to counteract
stabilizing resistive effects, and produce growth on geophysically interesting
timescales. We give a simple physical explanation of the instability, and show
that it relies on a force balance appropriate to the Earth's core, known as
magnetostrophic balance

Liu et al. 2008 discuss an important consideration for models of zonal winds
deep within giant planets. However, the constraints they propose for the depth
of the winds are based on their prescriptions for the internal structures of
the magnetic field and zonal winds. The same kinematic analysis applied to
other plausible configurations would produce no constraint on the depth to

Fluctuations in the Irreversible Decay of Turbulent Energy
A fluctuation law of the energy in freely-decaying, homogeneous and isotropic
turbulence is derived within standard closure hypotheses for 3D incompressible
flow. In particular, a fluctuation-dissipation relation is derived which
relates the strength of a stochastic backscatter term in the energy decay
equation to the mean of the energy dissipation rate. The theory is based on the
so-called ``effective action'' of the energy history and illustrates a
Rayleigh-Ritz method recently developed to evaluate the effective action
approximately within probability density-function (PDF) closures. These
effective actions generalize the Onsager-Machlup action of nonequilibrium
statistical mechanics to turbulent flow. They yield detailed, concrete
predictions for fluctuations, such as multi-time correlation functions of
arbitrary order, which cannot be obtained by direct PDF methods. They also

Turbulence Fluctuations and New Universal Realizability Conditions in Modelling
General turbulent mean statistics are shown to be characterized by a
variational principle. The variational functionals, or ``effective actions'',
have experimental consequences for turbulence fluctuations and are subject to
realizability conditions of positivity and convexity. An efficient
Rayleigh-Ritz algorithm is available to calculate approximate effective actions
within PDF closures. Examples are given for Navier-Stokes and for a 3-mode
system of Lorenz. The new realizability conditions succeed at detecting {\em a
priori} the poor predictions of PDF closures even when the classical 2nd-order

The Position of High Frequency Waves with Respect to the Granulation Pattern
High frequency velocity oscillations were observed in the spectral lines Fe I
543.45nm and 543.29nm, using 2D spectroscopy with a Fabry- Perot and speckle
reconstruction, at the VTT in Tenerife. We investigate the radial component of
waves with frequencies in the range 8 - 22mHz in the internetwork, network and
a pore. We find that the occurrence of waves do not show any preference on
location and are equally distributed over down-flows and up-flows, regardless
of the activity of the observed area in the line of Fe I 543.45nm. The waves
observed in the lower formed line of Fe I 543.29nm seem to appear

The geometry of a vorticity model equation
We provide rigorous evidence of the fact that the modified
Constantin-Lax-Majda equation modeling vortex and quasi-geostrophic dynamics
describes the geodesic flow on the subgroup of orientation-preserving
diffeomorphisms fixing one point, with respect to right-invariant metric
induced by the homogeneous Sobolev norm and show the local existence
of the geodesics in the extended group of diffeomorphisms of Sobolev class

3-D Perturbations in Conformal Turbulence
The effects of three-dimensional perturbations in two-dimensional turbulence
are investigated, through a conformal field theory approach. We compute scaling
exponents for the energy spectra of enstrophy and energy cascades, in a strong
coupling limit, and compare them to the values found in recent experiments. The
extension of unperturbed conformal turbulence to the present situation is
performed by means of a simple physical picture in which the existence of small
scale random forces is closely related to deviations of the exact

The use of group discussions as a means to facilitate learning from experiences is well documented in adventure education literature. Priest and Naismith (1993) assert that the use of the circular discussion method, where the leader poses questions to the participants, is the most common form of facilitation in adventure education. This paper draws on transcripts of facilitation sessions to argue that the widely advocated practice of leader summaries or paraphrases of student responses in these sessions functions as a potential mechanism to control and sponsor particular knowledge(s). Using transcripts from recorded facilitation sessions the analysis focuses on how the leader paraphrases the studentsâ responses and how these paraphrases or âformulationsâ function to modify or exclude particular aspects of the studentsâ responses. I assert that paraphrasing is not simply a neutral activity that merely functions to clarify a student response, it is a subtle means by which the leader of the session can, often inadvertently or unknowingly, alter the studentâs reply with the consequence of favouring particular knowledge(s). Revealing the subtle work that leader paraphrases perform is of importance for educators who claim to provide genuine opportunities for students to learn from their experience
