Modification of cell wall properties in lettuce improves shelf life
It is proposed that post-harvest longevity and appearance of salad crops is closely linked to pre-harvest leaf morphology (cell and leaf size) and biophysical structure (leaf strength). Transgenic lettuce plants (Lactuca sativa cv. Valeria) were produced in which the production of the cell wall-modifying enzyme xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolase (XTH) was down-regulated by antisense inhibition. Independently transformed lines were shown to have multiple members of the LsXTH gene family down-regulated in mature leaves of 6-week-old plants and during the course of shelf life. Consequently, xyloglucan endotransglucosylase (XET) enzyme activity and action were down-regulated in the cell walls of these leaves and it was established that leaf area and fresh weight were decreased while leaf strength was increased in the transgenic lines. Membrane permeability was reduced towards the end of shelf life in the transgenic lines relative to the controls and bacteria were evident inside the leaves of control plants only. Most importantly, an extended shelf-life of transgenic lines was observed relative to the non-transgenic control plants. These data illustrate the potential for engineering cell wall traits for improving quality and longevity of salad crops using either genetic modification directly, or by using markers associated with XTH genes to inform a commercial breeding programme
Managing groundwater in a mining region: an opportunity to compare best-worst and referendum data
In nonmarket valuation, practitioners must choose a format for the valuation questions. A common approach in discrete choice experiments is the ‘pick-one’ format, often with two alternative policy proposals and a status quo from which the respondent selects. Other proposed formats, include best-worst elicitation, where respondents are asked to indicate their most and least favoured alternative from a set. Although best-worst formats can offer efficiency in data collection, they can also lead to responses that are difficult to reconcile with neoclassical welfare estimation. The current article explores methodological issues surrounding the use of pick-one versus best-worst data for nonmarket valuation, focusing on framing and status quo effects that may occur within three-alternative discrete choice experiments. We illustrate these issues using a case study of surplus groundwater use from Western Australian mining. Results identify concerns that may render best-worst data unsuitable for welfare estimation, including a prevalence of serial choices in which the status quo is universally chosen as the worst alternative, rendering part of the choice process deterministic. Asymmetry of preferences and serial choices can be obscured when models are estimated using ‘naively’ pooled best-worst data. Results suggest that caution is warranted when using best-worst data for valuation, even when pooled results appear satisfactory

Periodic Radio Emission from the T8 Dwarf WISE J062309.94-045624.6
We present the detection of rotationally modulated, circularly polarized
radio emission from the T8 brown dwarf WISE J062309.94-045624.6 between 0.9 and
2.0 GHz. We detected this high proper motion ultracool dwarf with the
Australian SKA Pathfinder in GHz imaging data from the Rapid ASKAP
Continuum Survey. We observed WISE J062309.94-045624.6 to have a time and
frequency averaged Stokes I flux density of mJy beam, with
an absolute circular polarization fraction of , and calculated a
specific radio luminosity of erg s Hz. In
follow-up observations with the Australian Telescope Compact Array and MeerKAT
we identified a multi-peaked pulse structure, used dynamic spectra to place a
lower limit of kG on the dwarf's magnetic field, and measured a
h periodicity which we concluded to be due to rotational
modulation. The luminosity and period we measured are comparable to those of
other ultracool dwarfs observed at radio wavelengths. This implies that future
megahertz to gigahertz surveys, with increased cadence and improved
sensitivity, are likely to detect similar or later-type dwarfs. Our detection
of WISE J062309.94-045624.6 makes this dwarf the coolest and latest-type star

Recognizing the equity implications of restoration priority maps
A growing number of studies seek to identify global priority areas for conservation and restoration. These studies often produce maps that highlight the benefits of concentrating such activity in the tropics. However, the potential equity implications of using these prioritization exercises to guide global policy are less often explored and articulated. We highlight those equity issues by examining a widely publicized restoration priority map as an illustrative case. This map is based on a prioritization analysis that sought to identify places where restoration of agricultural land might provide the greatest biodiversity and carbon sequestration benefits at the lowest cost. First, we calculate the proportion of agricultural land in countries around the world that the map classifies as a top 15% restoration priority. A regression analysis shows that this map prioritizes restoration in countries where displacing agriculture may be most detrimental to livelihoods: countries that are poorer, more populated, more economically unequal, less food secure, and that employ more people in agriculture. Second, we show through another regression analysis that a similar pattern appears sub-nationally within the tropics: 5 km x 5 km parcels of land in the tropics that are less economically developed or more populated are more likely to be top 15% restoration priorities. In other words, equity concerns persist at a subnational scale even after putting aside comparisons between the tropics and the Global North. Restorative activity may be beneficial or harmful to local livelihoods depending on its conceptualization, implementation, and management. Our findings underline a need for prioritization exercises to better attend to the risks of concentrating potentially negative livelihood impacts in vulnerable regions. We join other scholars calling for greater integration of social data into restoration science

Ascaris suum-Derived Products Induce Human Neutrophil Activation via a G Protein-Coupled Receptor That Interacts with the Interleukin-8 Receptor Pathway
Infection with tissue-migrating helminths is frequently associated with intense granulocyte infiltrations.
Several host-derived factors are known to mediate granulocyte recruitment to the tissues, but less attention has
been paid to how parasite-derived products trigger this process. Parasite-derived chemotactic factors which
selectively recruit granulocytes have been described, but nothing is known about which cellular receptors
respond to these agents. The effect of products from the nematodes Ascaris suum, Toxocara canis, and Anisakis
simplex on human neutrophils were studied. We monitored four parameters of activation: chemotaxis, cell
polarization, intracellular Ca21 transients, and priming of superoxide anion production. Body fluids of A. suum
(ABF) and T. canis (TcBF) induced strong directional migration, shape change, and intracellular Ca21
transients. ABF also primed neutrophils for production of superoxide anions. Calcium mobilization in response
to A. suum-derived products was completely abrogated by pretreatment with pertussis toxin, implicating
a classical G protein-coupled receptor mechanism in the response to ABF. Moreover, pretreatment with
interleukin-8 (IL-8) completely abrogated the response to ABF, demonstrating desensitization of a common
pathway. However, ABF was unable to fully desensitize the response to IL-8, and binding to CXCR1 or CXCR2
was excluded in experiments using RBL-2H3 cells transfected with the two human IL-8 receptors. Our results
provide the first evidence for a direct interaction between a parasite-derived chemotactic factor and the host’s
chemotactic network, via a novel G protein-coupled receptor which interacts with the IL-8 receptor pathway
A temperate former West Antarctic ice sheet suggested by an extensive zone of bed channels
Several recent studies predict that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet will become increasingly unstable under warmer conditions. Insights on such change can be assisted through investigations of the subglacial landscape, which contains imprints of former ice-sheet behavior. Here, we present radio-echo sounding data and satellite imagery revealing a series of ancient large sub-parallel subglacial bed channels preserved in the region between the Möller and Foundation Ice Streams, West Antarctica. We suggest that these newly recognized channels were formed by significant meltwater routed along the icesheet bed. The volume of water required is likely substantial and can most easily be explained by water generated at the ice surface. The Greenland Ice Sheet today exemplifies how significant seasonal surface melt can be transferred to the bed via englacial routing. For West Antarctica, the Pliocene (2.6–5.3 Ma) represents the most recent sustained period when temperatures could have been high enough to generate surface melt comparable to that of present-day Greenland. We propose, therefore, that a temperate ice sheet covered this location during Pliocene warm periods
First observations of Weddell seals foraging in sponges in Erebus Bay, Antarctica
Attaching cameras to marine mammals allows for first-hand observation of underwater behaviours that may otherwise go unseen. While studying the foraging behaviour of 26 lactating Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) in Erebus Bay during the austral spring of 2018 and 2019, we witnessed three adults and one pup investigating the cavities of Rossellidae glass sponges, with one seal visibly chewing when she removed her head from the sponge. To our knowledge, this is the first report of such behaviour. While the prey item was not identifiable, some Trematomus fish (a known Weddell seal prey) use glass sponges for shelter and in which to lay their eggs. Three of the four sponge foraging observations occurred around 13:00 (NZDT). Two of the three sponge foraging adults had higher-than-average reproductive rates, and the greatest number of previous pups of any seal in our study population, each having ten pups in 12 years. This is far higher than the study population average of three previous pups (± 2.6 SD). This novel foraging strategy may have evolved in response to changes in prey availability, and could offer an evolutionary advantage to some individuals that exploit prey resources that others may not. Our observations offer new insight into the foraging behaviours of one of the world’s most studied marine mammals. Further research on the social aspects of Weddell seal behaviour may increase our understanding of the extent and mechanisms of behavioural transfer between conspecifics. Research into the specific foraging behaviour of especially successful or experienced breeders is also warranted
