    Geo-referencing as a connector between user reviews and urban environment quality

    The primary objective of this research is to understand the relationship between the positivity of user-generated content, namely Airbnb reviews and the “attractiveness” of the neighbourhood of the listing. Focussing on London wards and their Airbnb listings, we could identify some features which consistently signal positive sentiment and used best-subset selection to identify an overall relationship. We identified the types of features most commonly associated with positive sentiment before discussing how this information be used to influence urban development. Whilst analysis of the Airbnb market has been a popular area of study lately, to the best of our knowledge this specific research question has not been considered

    ATHENA has been designed as a general purpose detector capable of delivering the full scientific scope of the Electron-Ion Collider. Careful technology choices provide fine tracking and momentum resolution, high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry, hadron identification over a wide kinematic range, and near-complete hermeticity.This article describes the detector design and its expected performance in the most relevant physics channels. It includes an evaluation of detector technology choices, the technical challenges to realizing the detector and the R&D required to meet those challenges

    The impact of the Lesotho Child Grant Programme in the lives of children and adults with disabilities: Disaggregated analysis of a community randomized controlled trial

    Globally, people with disabilities are disproportionally affected by poverty. Social protection policies, including cash transfers, are key strategies to address poverty “in all its forms”, but it is currently unclear how such programmes affect people with disabilities. This study examines differences in the impact of the Lesotho Child Grant Programme (CGP) on food security, health, education and livelihoods between people with and without disabilities using data from a community randomized control trial. Overall, this study finds the CGP had significant and differential impacts for people with disabilities across multiple health indicators (e.g. increased health expenditures, self-rated health, likelihood of seeking healthcare). The CGP also had an impact on food security, decreasing the number of months households with and without members with disabilities faced extreme food shortages. There was also a modest but significant and differential impact of the CGP on the engagement of people with disabilities in paid work. The CGP only had an impact on school enrolment for children without disabilities, however the difference in impact was non-significant and likely due to underpowered sample sizes. Overall, people with disabilities receiving the CGP still experienced high levels of absolute deprivation, and were generally still worse off compared to people without disabilities, indicating a need for adapted or complementary social protection and other poverty alleviation programmes

    Disentangling type 2 diabetes and metformin treatment signatures in the human gut microbiota

    In recent years, several associations between common chronic human disorders and altered gut microbiome composition and function have been reported(1,2). In most of these reports, treatment regimens were not controlled for and conclusions could thus be confounded by the effects of various drugs on the microbiota, which may obscure microbial causes, protective factors or diagnostically relevant signals. Our study addresses disease and drug signatures in the human gut microbiome of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). Two previous quantitative gut metagenomics studies of T2D patients that were unstratified for treatment yielded divergent conclusions regarding its associated gut microbial dysbiosis(3,4). Here we show, using 784 available human gut metagenomes, how antidiabetic medication confounds these results, and analyse in detail the effects of the most widely used antidiabetic drug metformin. We provide support for microbial mediation of the therapeutic effects of metformin through short-chain fatty acid production, as well as for potential microbiota-mediated mechanisms behind known intestinal adverse effects in the form of a relative increase in abundance of Escherichia species. Controlling for metformin treatment, we report a unified signature of gut microbiome shifts in T2D with a depletion of butyrate-producing taxa(3,4). These in turn cause functional microbiome shifts, in part alleviated by metformin-induced changes. Overall, the present study emphasizes the need to disentangle gut microbiota signatures of specific human diseases from those of medication

    Association of N-Acetyl Asparagine with QTc in Diabetes: A Metabolomics Study

    Changes in the cardio-metabolomics profile and hormonal status have been associated with long QT syndrome, sudden cardiac death and increased mortality. The mechanisms underlying QTc duration are not fully understood. Therefore, an identification of novel markers that complement the diagnosis in these patients is needed. In the present study, we performed untargeted metabolomics on the sera of diabetic patients at a high risk of cardiovascular disease, followed up for 2.55 [2.34–2.88] years (NCT02431234), with the aim of identifying the metabolomic changes associated with QTc. We used independent weighted gene correlation network analysis (WGCNA) to explore the association between metabolites clusters and QTc at T1 (baseline) and T2 (follow up). The overlap of the highly correlated modules at T1 and T2 identified N-Acetyl asparagine as the only metabolite in common, which was involved with the urea cycle and metabolism of arginine, proline, glutamate, aspartate and asparagine. This analysis was confirmed by applying mixed models, further highlighting its association with QTc. In the current study, we were able to identify a metabolite associated with QTc in diabetic patients at two chronological time points, suggesting a previously unrecognized potential role of N-Acetyl asparagine in diabetic patients suffering from long QTc
