    Northern wheatbelt water supply study

    Get PDF
Department of Agriculture surveys have shown that many farms in Western australia\u27s northern wheatbelt have inadequate water supplies. More than 80 per cent of all farms in that area depend soley on groundwater for watering livestock, a much higher percentage than for most other farming areas. Because groundwater salinities have increased in recent years, concern is held for the long-term future of this recource. In contrast to more southern agricultural areas, farm dams in the northern wheatbelt are relatively uncommon. Only 30 per cent of the existing dams in the northern wheatbelt constitute effective water supplies. More than half of the ineffective dams regularly go dry, caused by those dams being too small and too shallow, or by an inadequate catchment, or both

Proalgebraic crossed modules of quasirational presentations

We introduce the concept of quasirational relation modules for discrete and pro-pp presentations of discrete and pro-pp groups and show that aspherical presentations and their subpresentations are quasirational. In the pro-pp-case quasirationality of pro-pp-groups with a single defining relation holds. For every quasirational (pro-pp)relation module we construct the so called pp-adic rationalization, which is a pro-fd-module R‟⊗^Qp=lim←⁡R/[R,RMn]⊗Qp\overline{R}\widehat{\otimes}\mathbb{Q}_p= \varprojlim R/[R,R\mathcal{M}_n]\otimes\mathbb{Q}_p. We provide the isomorphisms Rw∧‟(Qp)=R‟⊗^Qp\overline{R^{\wedge}_w}(\mathbb{Q}_p)=\overline{R}\widehat{\otimes}\mathbb{Q}_p and Ru‟(Qp)=O(Gu)∗\overline{R_u}(\mathbb{Q}_p)=\mathcal{O}(G_u)^*, where Rw∧R^{\wedge}_w and Ru∧R^{\wedge}_u stands for continuous prounipotent completions and corresponding prounipotent presentations correspondingly. We show how Rw∧‟\overline{R^{\wedge}_{w}} embeds into a sequence of abelian prounipotent groups. This sequence arises naturally from a certain prounipotent crossed module, the latter bring concrete examples of proalgebraic homotopy types. The old-standing open problem of Serre, slightly corrected by Gildenhuys, in its modern form states that pro-pp-groups with a single defining relation are aspherical. Our results give a positive feedback to the question of Serre.Comment: This is a corrected version of the paper which appeared in the Extended Abstracts Spring 2015, Interactions between Representation Theory, Algebraic Topology and Commutative Algebra, Research Perspectives CRM Barcelona, Vol.5, 201

    Workplace-Based Practicum: Enabling Expansive Practices

    Get PDF
Effective pre-service teacher education integrates theoretical and practical knowledge. One means of integration is practicum in a school workplace. In a time of variable approaches to, and models of, practicum, we outline an innovative model of school immersion as part of a teacher preparation program. We apply Fuller and Unwin’s (2004) expansive and restrictive conceptual framework of workplace learning to a case study of an immersive practicum experience to discuss themes of participation, personal development and institutional arrangements in relation to school-based practicum. Enablers and constraints are identified for our immersion model of workplace-based practicum. Based on the data analysis a number of implications for structuring an expansive practicum learning experience are outlined

Merredin townsite groundwater pumping and desalination pilot project

    Get PDF
Townsite salinity affects more than 40 towns in the WA wheatbelt. Waterlogging and salinity are responsible for damamge to townsite infrastructure. Through groundwater pumping and desalination, the State Salinity Council (now the Natural Resource Management Council) granted Merredin the the chance to prevent further damage to the townsite by funding this project

The de Rham homotopy theory and differential graded category

This paper is a generalization of arXiv:0810.0808. We develop the de Rham homotopy theory of not necessarily nilpotent spaces, using closed dg-categories and equivariant dg-algebras. We see these two algebraic objects correspond in a certain way. We prove an equivalence between the homotopy category of schematic homotopy types and a homotopy category of closed dg-categories. We give a description of homotopy invariants of spaces in terms of minimal models. The minimal model in this context behaves much like the Sullivan's minimal model. We also provide some examples. We prove an equivalence between fiberwise rationalizations and closed dg-categories with subsidiary data.Comment: 47 pages. final version. The failed liberalisation of Algeria and the international context: a legacy of stable authoritarianism

    Get PDF
The paper attempts to challenge the somewhat marginal role of international factors in the study of transitions to democracy. Theoretical and practical difficulties in proving causal mechanisms between international variables and domestic outcomes can be overcome by defining the international dimension in terms of Western dominance of world politics and by identifying Western actions towards democratising countries. The paper focuses on the case of Algeria, where international factors are key in explaining the initial process of democratisation and its following demise. In particular, the paper argues that direct Western policies, the pressures of the international system and external shocks influence the internal distribution of power and resources, which underpins the different strategies of all domestic actors. The paper concludes that analysis based purely on domestic factors cannot explain the process of democratisation and that international variables must be taken into more serious account and much more detailed

Deformation quantisation for unshifted symplectic structures on derived Artin stacks

    Get PDF
We prove that every 00-shifted symplectic structure on a derived Artin nn-stack admits a curved A∞A_{\infty} deformation quantisation. The classical method of quantising smooth varieties via quantisations of affine space does not apply in this setting, so we develop a new approach. We construct a map from DQ algebroid quantisations of unshifted symplectic structures on a derived Artin nn-stack to power series in de Rham cohomology, depending only on a choice of Drinfeld associator. This gives an equivalence between even power series and certain involutive quantisations, which yield anti-involutive curved A∞A_{\infty} deformations of the dg category of perfect complexes. In particular, there is a canonical quantisation associated to every symplectic structure on such a stack, which agrees for smooth varieties with the Kontsevich--Tamarkin quantisation for even associators.Comment: 27pp.; v2 Propositions 1.23 and 3.10 added; v3 several small additions; v4 several changes following referee's comments, to appear in Select

Derived coisotropic structures II: stacks and quantization

    Get PDF
We extend results about nn-shifted coisotropic structures from part I of this work to the setting of derived Artin stacks. We show that an intersection of coisotropic morphisms carries a Poisson structure of shift one less. We also compare non-degenerate shifted coisotropic structures and shifted Lagrangian structures and show that there is a natural equivalence between the two spaces in agreement with the classical result. Finally, we define quantizations of nn-shifted coisotropic structures and show that they exist for n>1n>1.Comment: 45 pages. Contains the second half of arXiv:1608.01482v1 with new material adde

Fibrinolytic protease production by new Streptomyces sp. DPUA 1576 from amazon lichens

    Get PDF
Background Streptomyces sp. DPUA 1576 from Amazon lichens was studied to protease and fibrinolytic production. A 22 factorial experimental design was applied to optimize its protease enzyme production using two independent variables, namely soybean flour and glucose concentrations. Results The optimal conditions to obtain high protease production (83.42 U/mL) were 1.26% soybean flour and 1.23% glucose concentration. A polynomial model was fitted to correlate the relationship between the two variables and protease activity. In relation to fibrinolytic activity, the highest activity of 706.5 mm2 was obtained at 1.7% soybean flour and 1.0% glucose concentration, which was 33% higher than plasmin. Fibrinolytic production was not optimized in the studied conditions. Conclusions These results show that the optimization of the culture medium can enhance protease production, thus becoming a good process for further research. In addition, Streptomyces sp. DPUA 1576, isolated from Amazon lichens, might be a potential strain for fibrinolytic protease production. The authors thank CAPES (National Council for the Improvement of Higher Education) for the scholarship and CNPq/RENORBIO (National Counsel of Technological and Scientific Development, N. 55146/2010-3) and FACEPE (Fundacao de Amparo a Ciencia e Tecnologia do Estado de Pernambuco, 0158-2.12/11) for the financial support

The ASEAN community-based tourism standards: looking beyond certification

    Get PDF
This paper reports findings from an opportunity study on the appropriateness of implementing community-based tourism standards (CBTS) certification through the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) criteria, as a way to improve sustainable tourism provision in the region. Framed by critical reflections on community-based tourism (CBT) literature and existing sustainable tourism standards (STS) practices, qualitative research consisting of interviews with six key industry experts provided core insights into a number of CBTS’ implementation challenges. Findings indicate the main hindering factors for the implementation of CBTS to be the lack of adequate governance, limited funding and insufficient community capacity. The study concluded that although at the moment the full implementation of CBTS as a certification programme would be premature, ASEAN-CBTS’ criteria are a useful benchmarking and strategic planning tool for local communities, which would eventually lead to improved CBT benefits, standards and performance in the region. At the same time, this paper argues that aspects including CBT competitiveness and service delivery need to be tackled first to create fruitful grounding for CBT certification
