    Menstruation: An Ableist Narrative

    Get PDF
This essay outlines how the focus on able-bodied menstruators in the development of social narratives about menstruation erases the experiences and the discrimination experienced by menstruators with disabilities. Many menstruators with disabilities experience shame around menstruation, embarrassed about the “burden” of their menstrual experiences on their caregivers and concerned about breaching menstrual etiquette around hygiene. Narratives about menstruation are incomplete without considering these experiences. Introducing a disability perspective also permits us to interrogate why popular depictions of the menstruating body are inadequate, how they continue to reinforce and romanticize values like independence and productivity, and validate structures that grant power and privilege to those values. Finally, the essay introduces ideas like supported decision-making and dismodernism that center the experiences of individuals with disabilities. This shift in focus has the potential to transform menstrual activism by introducing into the conversation more nuanced values of reciprocity, interdependence, and empathy

This study aims to describe the communication environment in Grade R classes in a rural district setting in the Western Cape in terms of language-learning environment; language-learning opportunities and language-learning interactions in order to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses. In addition to this, the study aims to explore the relationship between communication environments and school performance in a rural district in the Western Cape as well teacher and classroom variables. In order to do this, an observational tool, the Communication Supporting Classrooms Observational Tool, was used which allowed researchers to document what was happening in the classroom over the prescribed observation period (Dockrell, Bakopoulou, Law, & Spencer, 2010). Before this, the pilot phase of the study allowed researchers to train assistants to use the tool using video recordings as well as to ascertain the tool's applicability to South African classrooms with different languages of learning and teaching. A sample size of 60 classrooms was used in the main phase, consisting of 30 lower performing schools and 30 higher performing schools. The study included all regular learners and regular classroom teachers in the chosen Grade R classrooms in a rural/remote district. Overall, the outcomes of the pilot study were two-fold: (1) The researchers determined that the tool could be used reliably in classrooms where Afrikaans and isiXhosa were the language of instruction due to high inter-rater reliability measured by ICC; and (2) With sufficient training and practical examples, raters can be trained to use the tool effectively. In addition to these outcomes, the results of the pilot study allowed researchers to make useful choices for the main study. The study indicated that the tool was applicable in classrooms where Afrikaans and isiXhosa were the medium of instruction which allowed researchers to include these classrooms in the sample for the main study

Enhancing Prediction Reliability Of Deep Learning By Data Confidence For Recommendation Systems: A Case Study On Named Entity Recognition

Reliability is crucial for industrial recommendation systems. Recent advancement in deep neural networks has greatly improved the performance of modern recommendation systems. However, there is a lack of research on estimating how reliable such recommendation systems are in practical scenarios. Due to the blackbox nature of the deep learning-based systems, many times additional labor has to be involved to examine the prediction accuracy manually, which is costly and time-consuming. To address the problem, we propose a novel approach to estimate the model confidence for a deep learning-based recommendation system. Our approach utilized data statistics to improve the traditional model confidence estimation and maintain the model’s high performance. We further proposed a new evaluation metric to properly compare different prediction confidence estimation approaches. Experimental results showed that the external data statistics could effectively improve the prediction reliability by increasing confidence score, which will lead to significant reduction of the time and labors on the system’s prediction result examination. The adoption of digital platforms by MSMEs in Indonesia is still very low. This can be due to the lack of capacity of MSMEs to adapt to digital technology. There are three main problems related to the capacity of MSMEs in dealing with digital platforms, namely financial resources, business operations, and business expansion. The purpose of the research is to analyze the digital platform model that can develop the capacity of MSMEs as business entities, especially related to financial resources, business operations, and business expansion. The research method used is netnography by presenting a new approach to conducting ethical and thorough ethnographic research that combines archival data and online communication, participation and observation, with digital data collection and networks. Informants in this study consisted of digital platform service providers, users, and regulators. There were fourteen informants involved in this study spread across two provinces, namely the Special Capital Region of Jakarta and Banten. Analysis of the data used is conceptually clustered matrices (matrices grouped conceptually) which are arranged to unite the main roles, research subtopics, concepts or themes together for documentation. The results of the study indicate that MSME capacity development in the adoption of digital platforms in terms of financial resources includes access to capital, preparation of financial reports and the use of accounting application platforms. In terms of business operations, it includes Human Resources management, payment systems and logistics management. As for business expansion, it includes digital marketing and online markets

The Effects of a Universal Income Transfer on Food Insecurity within Households

Food insecurity is a persistent public health problem, and it adversely affects multiple dimensions of health and well-being across various stages of life. Socio-economic characteristics is one of the key predictors of food insecurity and there exists a strong association between income and food insecurity. Since food insecurity is closely linked to deprivation of financial resources, research has been continued to examine the potential of government income support policies in mitigating food insecurity. Several studies have already demonstrated that income interventions alleviate household-level food insecurity. However, little is known about how these public policies affect adults and children, within the households, respectively. Using the Universal Child Care Benefit as an exogenous income shock, we estimate the relationship between income and food insecurity separately for adults and children. In Chapter 1, we use data from the public-use microdata files of the Canadian Community Health Survey (2005-2012) and employ a standard difference-in-differences methodology to assess the impact of a universal income transfer on food insecurity at the adult, child, and household levels. In 2006, the Canadian federal government introduced the Universal Child Care Benefit as an income support for families with children below the age of six years. This policy provided families with a monthly taxable benefit of $100 for each child, regardless of socio-economic conditions. We quantify the effects of this income transfer using two measures of self-reported food insecurity: a four-level categorical measurement (i.e., food-secure, marginally food-insecure, moderately food-insecure and severely food-insecure) and a continuous food insecurity scale. Our results based on both measures suggest that the transfer reduced the prevalence and severity of food insecurity at the child-level. The policy change increased the probability of being food secure and reduced the likelihood of experiencing any form of food insecurity for children from eligible households. In Chapter 2, we address the heterogeneity in the impact of the income transfer on food insecurity across households. Using the same dataset from the Canadian Community Health Survey (2005-2012) and again utilizing a difference-in-differences method, we estimate the policy effects across subpopulations differentiated based on living arrangements, highest educational attainment in the household and household income. Our findings from subgroup analyses reveal disparities in the policy impact and indicate statistically significant reductions in child-level food insecurity among two-parent households, those with secondary education and those with household income at or above the median. These heterogeneous estimates suggest that the universal income transfer likely could not lead to substantial improvements in food security for vulnerable subpopulations. Both chapter findings illustrate the need for disaggregating the food insecurity effects of income supplement and similar public policy interventions by different levels within and across households to help policymakers design better informed and targeted interventions

This internship report is submitted in a partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration, 2015Cataloged from PDF version of Internship report.Includes bibliographical references (page 34).At the 21st Century, with the help of technology, people are getting all the latest facilities. In this paper, I have tried to put my overview of Bangladeshi e-commerce industry, Kaymu Bangladesh and its marketing strategies, model, comparison with the current market players and its vision to provide the most diversified online shopping marketplace for the Bangladeshi Consumer. Kaymu Bangladesh is a venture of world’s largest internet incubator Rocket Internet GmbH. In September, 2013, Kaymu Bangladesh started its operations here in this country and within a short period of time, has become a popular destination for the online shoppers. Kaymu Bangladesh follows the EBay business model of buying and selling on a single platform where the sellers sell their products on Kaymu website in exchange of commission percentage on each and every sale. Kaymu is an online marketplace where buyers and sellers meet and exchange goods. Buyers from Dhaka enjoy the facility of payment via cash on delivery while the buyers outside Dhaka throughout the country also can enjoy the home delivery service by prepayment through mobile banking. Kaymu provides sellers the free advertisements of their products through social media, newsletter and Google Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Through Kaymu, sellers can sell their products very easily as they have the total control of the entire process of selling including the payment. Sellers use Kaymu website to showcase their products and get buyers for the products. When they get an order, they contact and deliver the product on their own or through Kaymu Delivery Partner- AIG Express. Right now, the online selling process is running smoothly but sometimes when there is pressure of more delivery, then the buyers might suffer. This is a major issue for Kaymu and they value this issue highly as at the Beginning it was becoming hard for them to run their operations without dependable delivery partner but now they have established AIG Express as a trusted and dependable delivery partner. Kaymu is trying to achieve its break even by the end of 2016, when their operation will be around three years in Bangladesh. Currently it runs from the funding of its parent company, Rocket Internet Gmbh. Kaymu’s revenue is increasing from its inception. Though Kaymu is a new company, but already they have created their own space in the market and becoming very popular to the online consumers. Kaymu believes that the more its sellers sell, the more revenue Kaymu makes. So they are working relentlessly to market the products of its sellers. Bangladesh is a challenging market for Kaymu. Most of the people do not know the use of internet yet. But Kaymu has a clear goal to offer their customers a diversified shopping experience by making newer strategies every day.Prianka Grasia CostaB. Business Administratio
