Dynamical Measurements of the Young Upper Scorpius Triple NTTS 155808-2219
The young, low-mass, triple system NTTS 155808-2219 (ScoPMS 20) was
previously identified as a ~17-day period single-lined spectroscopic binary
with a tertiary component at 0.21 arcseconds. Using high-resolution infrared
spectra, acquired with NIRSPEC on Keck II, both with and without adaptive
optics, we measured radial velocities of all three components. Reanalysis of
the single-lined visible light observations, made from 1987 to 1993, also
yielded radial velocity detections of the three stars. Combining visible light
and infrared data to compute the orbital solution produces orbital parameters
consistent with the single-lined solution and a mass ratio of q = 0.78 +/- 0.01
for the SB. We discuss the consistency between our results and previously
published data on this system, our radial-velocity analysis with both observed
and synthetic templates, and the possibility that this system is eclipsing,
providing a potential method for the determination of the stars' absolute
masses. Over the ~20 year baseline of our observations, we have measured the
acceleration of the SB's center-of-mass in its orbit with the tertiary.
Long-term, adaptive optics imaging of the tertiary will eventually yield

On an iteratively reweighted linesearch based algorithm for nonconvex composite optimization
In this paper we propose a new algorithm for solving a class of nonsmooth nonconvex problems, which is obtained by combining the iteratively reweighted scheme with a finite number of forward–backward iterations based on a linesearch procedure. The new method overcomes some limitations of linesearch forward–backward methods, since it can be applied also to minimize functions containing terms that are both nonsmooth and nonconvex. Moreover, the combined scheme can take advantage of acceleration techniques consisting in suitable selection rules for the algorithm parameters. We develop the convergence analysis of the new method within the framework of the Kurdyka– Lojasiewicz property. Finally, we present the results of a numerical experience on microscopy image super resolution, showing that the performances of our method are comparable or superior to those of other algorithms designed for this specific application
Smooth stable and unstable manifolds for stochastic partial differential equations
Invariant manifolds are fundamental tools for describing and understanding
nonlinear dynamics. In this paper, we present a theory of stable and unstable
manifolds for infinite dimensional random dynamical systems generated by a
class of stochastic partial differential equations. We first show the existence
of Lipschitz continuous stable and unstable manifolds by the Lyapunov-Perron's
method. Then, we prove the smoothness of these invariant manifolds
Jensen-Shannon divergence as a measure of distinguishability between mixed quantum states
We discuss an alternative to relative entropy as a measure of distance
between mixed quantum states. The proposed quantity is an extension to the
realm of quantum theory of the Jensen-Shannon divergence (JSD) between
probability distributions. The JSD has several interesting properties. It
arises in information theory and, unlike the Kullback-Leibler divergence, it is
symmetric, always well defined and bounded. We show that the quantum JSD (QJSD)
shares with the relative entropy most of the physically relevant properties, in
particular those required for a "good" quantum distinguishability measure. We
relate it to other known quantum distances and we suggest possible applications

EARLIER INTERVENTION IN TYPE 2 DIABETES
In type 2 diabetes, the onset and progression of complications is significantly delayed by improving glycaemic control. However, the proportion of patients reaching and sustaining guideline recommendations for glycaemic targets remains unacceptably low. Recent clinical trials and predictive physiologically based mathematical simulations (Archimedes model) indicate that benefits can be enhanced with earlier intervention and timely achievement of glycaemic targets. This article reviews the evidence for early intervention, showing that intensive approaches, including earlier introduction of combination therapy, allow more patients to achieve glycaemic targets and hence reduce complications and delay disease progression
The Smallest Mass Ratio Young Star Spectroscopic Binaries
Using high resolution near-infrared spectroscopy with the Keck telescope, we
have detected the radial velocity signatures of the cool secondary components
in four optically identified pre-main-sequence, single-lined spectroscopic
binaries. All are weak-lined T Tauri stars with well-defined center of mass
velocities. The mass ratio for one young binary, NTTS 160905-1859, is M2/M1 =
0.18+/-0.01, the smallest yet measured dynamically for a pre-main-sequence
spectroscopic binary. These new results demonstrate the power of infrared
spectroscopy for the dynamical identification of cool secondaries. Visible
light spectroscopy, to date, has not revealed any pre-main-sequence secondary
stars with masses <0.5 M_sun, while two of the young systems reported here are
in that range. We compare our targets with a compilation of the published young
double-lined spectroscopic binaries and discuss our unique contribution to this

Adjoint bi-continuous semigroups and semigroups on the space of measures
For a given bi-continuous semigroup T on a Banach space X we define its
adjoint on an appropriate closed subspace X^o of the norm dual X'. Under some
abstract conditions this adjoint semigroup is again bi-continuous with respect
to the weak topology (X^o,X). An application is the following: For K a Polish
space we consider operator semigroups on the space C(K) of bounded, continuous
functions (endowed with the compact-open topology) and on the space M(K) of
bounded Baire measures (endowed with the weak*-topology). We show that
bi-continuous semigroups on M(K) are precisely those that are adjoints of a
bi-continuous semigroups on C(K). We also prove that the class of bi-continuous
semigroups on C(K) with respect to the compact-open topology coincides with the
class of equicontinuous semigroups with respect to the strict topology. In
general, if K is not Polish space this is not the case
Improved PET/MRI accuracy by use of static transmission source in empirically derived hardware attenuation correction
Background
Accurate quantification of radioactivity, measured by an integrated positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, is still a challenge. One aspect of such a challenge is to correct for the hardware attenuation, such as the patient table and radio frequency (RF) resonators. For PET/MRI systems, computed tomography (CT) is commonly used to produce hardware attenuation correction (AC) maps, by converting Hounsfield units (HU) to a linear attenuation coefficients (LAC) map at the PET energy level 511 keV, using a bilinear model. The model does not address beam hardening, nor higher density materials, which can lead to inaccurate corrections. Purpose
In this study, we introduce a transmission-based (TX-based) AC technique with a static Germanium-68 (Ge-68) transmission source to generate hardware AC maps using the PET/MRI system itself, without the need for PET or medical CT scanners. The AC TX-based maps were generated for a homogeneous cylinder, made of acrylic as a validator. The technique thereafter was applied to the patient table and posterior part of an RF-phased array used in cardiovascular PET/MRI imaging. The proposed TX-based, and the CT-based, hardware maps were used in reconstructing PET images of one cardiac patient, and the results were analysed and compared. Results
The LAC derived by the TX-based method for the acrylic cylinder is estimated to be 0.10851 ± 0.00380 cm−1 compared to the 0.10698 ± 0.00321 cm−1 theoretical value reported in the literature. The PET photon counts were reduced by 8.7 ± 1.1% with the patient table, at the region used in cardiac scans, while the CT-based map, used for correction, over-estimated counts by 4.3 ± 1.3%. Reconstructed in vivo images using TX-based AC hardware maps have shown 4.1 ± 0.9% mean difference compared to those reconstructed images using CT-based AC. Conclusions
The LAC of the acrylic cylinder measurements using the TX-based technique was in agreement with those in the literature confirming the validity of the technique. The over-estimation of photon counts caused by the CT-based model used for the patient table was improved by the TX-based technique. Therefore, TX-based AC of hardware using the PET/MRI system itself is possible and can produce more accurate images when compared to the CT-based hardware AC in cardiac PET images
Insulin degludec results in lower rates of nocturnal hypoglycaemia and fasting plasma glucose vs. insulin glargine: A meta-analysis of seven clinical trials *
AbstractBackground and aimsBasal insulin analogues have a reduced risk of hypoglycaemia compared with NPH insulin, but hypoglycaemia still remains a major impediment to achieving recommended fasting plasma glucose (FPG) targets in patients with diabetes. Insulin degludec (IDeg) is a new basal insulin that forms soluble multihexamers after subcutaneous injection resulting in an ultra-long duration of action and stable glucose-lowering effect. The aim of this analysis was to compare the effect of IDeg on FPG and nocturnal confirmed hypoglycaemia as compared to insulin glargine (IGlar).Methods and resultsData were included from seven phase 3a, randomised, open-label, treat-to-target clinical trials in which once-daily IDeg was compared with once-daily IGlar. Two trials included a total of 957 patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and five trials included a total of 3360 patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D); all trials were 26 or 52 weeks in duration. Confirmed hypoglycaemia was defined as plasma glucose <3.1 mmol/L or severe episodes requiring assistance, and nocturnal hypoglycaemia occurred between 00:01 and 05:59. In all trials, the mean end-of-trial FPG was lower for IDeg than IGlar, reaching statistical significance in three trials. Similarly, IDeg was associated with a lower rate of nocturnal confirmed hypoglycaemia vs. IGlar, which was statistically significant in three trials, regardless of type of diabetes or background therapy.ConclusionThis analysis shows that the lower rate of nocturnal confirmed hypoglycaemia seen with IDeg relative to IGlar is accompanied by a reduced mean FPG, in particular in patients with T2D
Constraints on the Progenitor System of the Type Ia Supernova 2014J from Pre-Explosion Hubble Space Telescope Imaging
We constrain the properties of the progenitor system of the highly reddened
Type Ia supernova (SN) 2014J in Messier 82 (M82; d ~ 3.5 Mpc). We determine the
SN location using Keck-II K-band adaptive optics images, and we find no
evidence for flux from a progenitor system in pre-explosion near-ultraviolet
through near-infrared Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images. Our upper limits
exclude systems having a bright red giant companion, including symbiotic novae
with luminosities comparable to that of RS Ophiuchi. While the flux constraints
are also inconsistent with predictions for comparatively cool He-donor systems
(T < ~35,000 K), we cannot preclude a system similar to V445 Puppis. The
progenitor constraints are robust across a wide range of R_V and A_V values,
but significantly greater values than those inferred from the SN light curve
and spectrum would yield proportionally brighter luminosity limits. The
comparatively faint flux expected from a binary progenitor system consisting of
white dwarf stars would not have been detected in the pre-explosion HST
imaging. Infrared HST exposures yield more stringent constraints on the
luminosities of very cool (T < 3000 K) companion stars than was possible in the
