Get PDF
A solar chimney power plant (SCPP) is a renewable-energy power plant that transforms solar energy into electricity. The SCPP consists of three essential elements – solar air collector, chimney tower, and wind turbine(s). The present work is aimed at optimizing the geometry of the major components of the SCPP using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS-CFX to study and improve the flow characteristics inside the SCPP. The overall chimney height and the collector diameter of the SCPP were kept constant at 10 m and 8 m respectively. The collector inlet opening was varied from 0.05 m to 0.2 m. The collector outlet diameter was also varied from 0.6 m to 1 m. These modified collectors were tested with chimneys of different divergence angles (0–3) and also different chimney inlet openings of 0.6 m to 1 m. The diameter of the chimney was also varied from 0.25 m to 0.3 m. Based on the CFX computational results, the best configuration was achieved using the chimney with a divergence angle of 2 and chimney diameter of 0.25 m together with the collector opening of 0.05 m and collector outlet diameter of 1 m. The temperature inside the collector is higher for the lower opening resulting in a higher flow rate and power

Objective: A series of novel synthesis of 5-Substituted-3-phenyl-4,5-dihydro-pyrazole-1-carbothioic acid [4-(9, 10-dihydro-acridin-9-yl)-phenyl]- amide (IV) were synthesized using standard procedures and evaluated for cytotoxic studies. Methods: 9-(4-Chloro-phenyl)-9 and 10-dihydro-acridine (I) were formed by cyclization of diphenylamine with substituted acids in the prescience of zinc chloride and synthesis of 5-substituted-3-phenyl-4, 5-dihydro-pyrazole-1-carbothioic acid amide (3) by the cyclization of different chalcones (II) and final compounds were synthesized by fusion of 5-substituted-3-phenyl-4, 5-dihydro-pyrazole-1-carbothioic acid amide (III) with 9-(4-Chloro-phenyl)-9, 10-dihydro-acridine (I) by microwave irradiation method. Characterization of synthesized compounds by infrared, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 13C NMR, and mass spectroscopic methods. Obtained compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxicity against human breast cancer cell lines (MCF/wt) by sulforhodamine-B assay. Docking studies with Aurora kinase protein were performed to elucidate the possible mechanistic insights of these novel acridine tagged pyrazole derivatives. Results: Moderate to good in vitro cytotoxic potentials of the newly synthesized molecules was reported against selected human breast cancer cell lines. Among the tested molecules, compound C6 showed good cytotoxic activity against MCF/wt (08.2±0.4 μM). The dock scores of the tested compounds were ranged between −8.926 and −5.139. Compound C6 which has been reported as the most effective cytotoxic agent among the series also reported the highest dock score of -8.926 and showed hydrogen bond interaction with GLU-211, LYS-162, and LYS-143. Ligand binding energy with protein suggested compound C6 has shown the highest binding energy of −86.32133 kcal/mol. Conclusion: The in vitro studies of the newly synthesized acridine tagged pyrazole derivatives reported considerable cytotoxic potentials against human breast cancer cell lines and structure-activity relationship studies to suggest that acridine tagged pyrazole derivatives with hydroxy group present on phenyl ring at fifth position of pyrazole ring could probably increase the cytotoxic potentials. With the reported bioactivities of these derivatives, further studies on the derivatization could elucidate the broader cytotoxic potentials

Marine current energy is a clean energy source and is a solution to the problems faced by burning fossil fuels such as global warming and climate change. Once tapped, the useful shaft power can be converted into electrical energy. To make this practical, the designed energy converter should be capable of operating at low marine current velocities, it should be suitable for installation at locations that have low water depths and should have lower manufacturing, installation and maintenance costs. A ducted cross-flow turbine has all the above features and it will be suitable for Pacific Island countries (PICs) for extracting marine current energy. The ducted cross-flow turbine was designed, modelled and analyzed in commercial Computational Fluid dynamic (CFD) code ANSYS-CFX. The inlet and outlet duct sizes were optimized for maximum output. Before the analysis of full model, the CFD results were validated with experimental results. Simulations for the 1:10 ducted cross-flow turbine (having a diameter of 150 mm) were performed with 400,000 nodes, as increase in the grid size did not make much difference other than increasing the simulation time significantly. The maximum difference in the power coefficient between CFD and experimental results was 6%. Simulations were then performed for the full-scale prototype, which has a duct (nozzle) inlet of 3.5 m x 3.5 m and a turbine diameter of 1.5 m, at three freestream velocities of 0.65 m/s, 1.95 m/s and 3.25 m/s. Analysis of the prototype performance showed that the ducted cross-flow turbine can reach a maximum efficiency of 56% and can produce 21.5 kW of power at a current speed of 1.95 m/s and 103.6 kW at 3.25 m/s. The designed cut-off speed was 4 m/s

Sentiment analysis (SA) is the process of understanding emotion within a text. It helps identify the opinion, attitude, and tone of a text categorizing it into positive, negative, or neutral. SA is frequently used today as more and more people get a chance to put out their thoughts due to the advent of social media. Sentiment analysis benefits industries around the globe, like finance, advertising, marketing, travel, hospitality, etc. Although the majority of work done in this field is on global languages like English, in recent years, the importance of SA in local languages has also been widely recognized. This has led to considerable research in the analysis of Indian regional languages. This paper comprehensively reviews SA in the following major Indian Regional languages: Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali, Gujarati, and Urdu. Furthermore, this paper presents techniques, challenges, findings, recent research trends, and future scope for enhancing results accuracy

Physics Potential of the ICAL detector at the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO)

Get PDF
The upcoming 50 kt magnetized iron calorimeter (ICAL) detector at the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) is designed to study the atmospheric neutrinos and antineutrinos separately over a wide range of energies and path lengths. The primary focus of this experiment is to explore the Earth matter effects by observing the energy and zenith angle dependence of the atmospheric neutrinos in the multi-GeV range. This study will be crucial to address some of the outstanding issues in neutrino oscillation physics, including the fundamental issue of neutrino mass hierarchy. In this document, we present the physics potential of the detector as obtained from realistic detector simulations. We describe the simulation framework, the neutrino interactions in the detector, and the expected response of the detector to particles traversing it. The ICAL detector can determine the energy and direction of the muons to a high precision, and in addition, its sensitivity to multi-GeV hadrons increases its physics reach substantially. Its charge identification capability, and hence its ability to distinguish neutrinos from antineutrinos, makes it an efficient detector for determining the neutrino mass hierarchy. In this report, we outline the analyses carried out for the determination of neutrino mass hierarchy and precision measurements of atmospheric neutrino mixing parameters at ICAL, and give the expected physics reach of the detector with 10 years of runtime. We also explore the potential of ICAL for probing new physics scenarios like CPT violation and the presence of magnetic monopoles.Comment: 139 pages, Physics White Paper of the ICAL (INO) Collaboration, Contents identical with the version published in Pramana - J. Burden of injuries in Nepal, 1990–2017: Findings from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

Get PDF
Background: Nepal is a low-income country undergoing rapid political, economic and social development. To date, there has been little evidence published on the burden of injuries during this period of transition. Methods: The Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) is a comprehensive measurement of population health outcomes in terms of morbidity and mortality. We analysed the GBD 2017 estimates for deaths, years of life lost, years lived with disability, incidence and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) from injuries to ascertain the burden of injuries in Nepal from 1990 to 2017.Results: There were 16 831 (95% uncertainty interval 13 323 to 20 579) deaths caused by injuries (9.21% of all-cause deaths (7.45% to 11.25%)) in 2017 while the proportion of deaths from injuries was 6.31% in 1990. Overall, the injury-specific age-standardised mortality rate declined from 88.91 (71.54 to 105.31) per 100 000 in 1990 to 70.25 (56.75 to 85.11) per 100 000 in 2017. In 2017, 4.11% (2.47% to 6.10%) of all deaths in Nepal were attributed to transport injuries, 3.54% (2.86% to 4.08%) were attributed to unintentional injuries and 1.55% (1.16% to 1.85%) were attributed to self-harm and interpersonal violence. From 1990 to 2017, road injuries, falls and self-harm all rose in rank for all causes of death. Conclusions: The increase in injury-related deaths and DALYs in Nepal between 1990 and 2017 indicates the need for further research and prevention interventions. Injuries remain an important public health burden in Nepal with the magnitude and trend of burden varying over time by cause-specific, sex and age group. Findings from this study may be used by the federal, provincial and local governments in Nepal to prioritise injury prevention as a public health agenda and as evidence for country-specific interventions

Bronchiectasis in India:results from the European Multicentre Bronchiectasis Audit and Research Collaboration (EMBARC) and Respiratory Research Network of India Registry

Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Bronchiectasis is a common but neglected chronic lung disease. Most epidemiological data are limited to cohorts from Europe and the USA, with few data from low-income and middle-income countries. We therefore aimed to describe the characteristics, severity of disease, microbiology, and treatment of patients with bronchiectasis in India. METHODS: The Indian bronchiectasis registry is a multicentre, prospective, observational cohort study. Adult patients ( 6518 years) with CT-confirmed bronchiectasis were enrolled from 31 centres across India. Patients with bronchiectasis due to cystic fibrosis or traction bronchiectasis associated with another respiratory disorder were excluded. Data were collected at baseline (recruitment) with follow-up visits taking place once per year. Comprehensive clinical data were collected through the European Multicentre Bronchiectasis Audit and Research Collaboration registry platform. Underlying aetiology of bronchiectasis, as well as treatment and risk factors for bronchiectasis were analysed in the Indian bronchiectasis registry. Comparisons of demographics were made with published European and US registries, and quality of care was benchmarked against the 2017 European Respiratory Society guidelines. FINDINGS: From June 1, 2015, to Sept 1, 2017, 2195 patients were enrolled. Marked differences were observed between India, Europe, and the USA. Patients in India were younger (median age 56 years [IQR 41-66] vs the European and US registries; p<0뜀01]) and more likely to be men (1249 [56\ub79%] of 2195). Previous tuberculosis (780 [35\ub75%] of 2195) was the most frequent underlying cause of bronchiectasis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most common organism in sputum culture (301 [13\ub77%]) in India. Risk factors for exacerbations included being of the male sex (adjusted incidence rate ratio 1뜗, 95% CI 1뜃-1뜲; p=0뜁5), P aeruginosa infection (1뜩, 1뜐-1띐; p=0뜀1), a history of pulmonary tuberculosis (1뜠, 1뜇-1뜴; p=0뜀2), modified Medical Research Council Dyspnoea score (1뜲, 1뜥-1뜹; p<0뜀01), daily sputum production (1뜖, 1뜃-1뜰; p=0뜁3), and radiological severity of disease (1뜃, 1뜁-1뜄; p<0뜀01). Low adherence to guideline-recommended care was observed; only 388 patients were tested for allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis and 82 patients had been tested for immunoglobulins. INTERPRETATION: Patients with bronchiectasis in India have more severe disease and have distinct characteristics from those reported in other countries. This study provides a benchmark to improve quality of care for patients with bronchiectasis in India. Common variants in CLDN2 and MORC4 genes confer disease susceptibility in patients with chronic pancreatitis

Get PDF
A recent Genome-wide Association Study (GWAS) identified association with variants in X-linked CLDN2 and MORC4 and PRSS1-PRSS2 loci with Chronic Pancreatitis (CP) in North American patients of European ancestry. We selected 9 variants from the reported GWAS and replicated the association with CP in Indian patients by genotyping 1807 unrelated Indians of Indo-European ethnicity, including 519 patients with CP and 1288 controls. The etiology of CP was idiopathic in 83.62% and alcoholic in 16.38% of 519 patients. Our study confirmed a significant association of 2 variants in CLDN2 gene (rs4409525—OR 1.71, P = 1.38 x 10-09; rs12008279—OR 1.56, P = 1.53 x 10-04) and 2 variants in MORC4 gene (rs12688220—OR 1.72, P = 9.20 x 10-09; rs6622126—OR 1.75, P = 4.04x10-05) in Indian patients with CP. We also found significant association at PRSS1-PRSS2 locus (OR 0.60; P = 9.92 x 10-06) and SAMD12-TNFRSF11B (OR 0.49, 95% CI [0.31–0.78], P = 0.0027). A variant in the gene MORC4 (rs12688220) showed significant interaction with alcohol (OR for homozygous and heterozygous risk allele -14.62 and 1.51 respectively, P = 0.0068) suggesting gene-environment interaction. A combined analysis of the genes CLDN2 and MORC4 based on an effective risk allele score revealed a higher percentage of individuals homozygous for the risk allele in CP cases with 5.09 fold enhanced risk in individuals with 7 or more effective risk alleles compared with individuals with 3 or less risk alleles (P = 1.88 x 10-14). Genetic variants in CLDN2 and MORC4 genes were associated with CP in Indian patients

Elevated miR-499 Levels Blunt the Cardiac Stress Response

Get PDF
The heart responds to myriad stresses by well-described transcriptional responses that involve long-term changes in gene expression as well as more immediate, transient adaptations. MicroRNAs quantitatively regulate mRNAs and thus may affect the cardiac transcriptional output and cardiac function. Here we investigate miR-499, a microRNA embedded within a ventricular-specific myosin heavy chain gene, which is expressed in heart and skeletal muscle. We assessed miR-499 expression in human tissue to confirm its potential relevance to human cardiac gene regulation. Using a transgenic mouse model, we found that elevated miR-499 levels caused cellular hypertrophy and cardiac dysfunction in a dose-dependent manner. Global gene expression profiling revealed altered levels of the immediate early stress response genes (Egr1, Egr2 and Fos), ß-myosin heavy chain (Myh7), and skeletal muscle actin (Acta1). We verified the effect of miR-499 on the immediate early response genes by miR-499 gain- and loss-of-function in vitro. Consistent with a role for miR-499 in blunting the response to cardiac stress, asymptomatic miR-499-expressing mice had an impaired response to pressure overload and accentuated cardiac dysfunction.Elevated miR-499 levels affect cardiac gene expression and predispose to cardiac stress-induced dysfunction. miR-499 may titrate the cardiac response to stress in part by regulating the immediate early gene response
