Process Calculi Abstractions for Biology

Get PDF
Several approaches have been proposed to model biological systems by means of the formal techniques and tools available in computer science. To mention just a few of them, some representations are inspired by Petri Nets theory, and some other by stochastic processes. A most recent approach consists in interpreting the living entities as terms of process calculi where the behavior of the represented systems can be inferred by applying syntax-driven rules. A comprehensive picture of the state of the art of the process calculi approach to biological modeling is still missing. This paper goes in the direction of providing such a picture by presenting a comparative survey of the process calculi that have been used and proposed to describe the behavior of living entities. This is the preliminary version of a paper that was published in Algorithmic Bioprocesses. The original publication is available at http://www.springer.com/computer/foundations/book/978-3-540-88868-

Get PDF
Heteroaryl ortho-phenoxyethyl amines have been extensively employed in medicinal chemistry as privileged scaffolds for the design of highly potent and selective ligands. Herein we report an efficient, fast and general method for the synthesis of heteroaryl phenoxyethyl amines via Suzuki cross-coupling. This approach offers the opportunity to obtain a large variety of biaryls incorporating five-membered (thiophene, furan, thiazole, pyrazole, imidazole) or six-membered (pyridine, pyrimidine) heteroaromatic rings for appropriate libraries of ligands. All the compounds presented here have never been synthesized before and a full structural characterization is given

The experiment was aimed to evaluate the usefulness of hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) in revealing the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis due to the passage of young bulls from genetic rearing stations to artificial insemination (AI) centre and the influence of this passage on hair testosterone concentrations (HTC). Hair samples on 33 yearling bulls were collected at the time of arrival (ST1) to the AI centre and 3 more hair samples (ST2, ST3, ST4) were collected at monthly intervals. After the end of quarantine each animal was submitted to the standard procedures for collection and production of semen. Overall HCC were significantly affected by period of collection (p  .05). The effect of breed was observed only for HTC that was higher in PRI than BS (p  .05). On the contrary, the effect of breed was evident. The results of this study replicated the effects of a major environmental stressor on mean cortisol concentrations assessed in hair, and add to the growing body of evidence that HCC is an effective and simply collected marker for long-term activity of the HPA system in response to persistent environmental challenge

Preterm birth is a potential biological and psychosocial risk for the child’s development, exposing him to adverse events. It is also a risk to maternal mental health, generating a high level of anxiety and depression. This study aims to investigate the influence of ludic on the level of anxiety of the mother of premature newborns hospitalized. Evaluative-interventional-evolutionary study, performed with 30 mothers, in a university hospital in Greater São Paulo. It began with the survey of the gestational profile, followed by the emotional state through the Anxiety, Depression and Irritability Scale (IDA) and expectancy for the baby, with the Inventory of Neonatal Perception (IPN-I), accomplished with 16 ludic groups, in weekly sessions of 60 minutes each, on a Piagetian basis, reconciling affective-emotional and cognitive processes. The profile data showed a history of risky pregnancy. IDA demonstrated 75% of mothers with high levels of anxiety and depression. IPN-I proved that mothers have positive expectations regarding their baby. Interventional analysis revealed that creating ludic groups was favorable, with high adherence and motivation of the mothers. Progressive relaxation, interaction, release of anxious and distressing contents related to the mismatch between the expected baby and the actual baby were observed. It was verified that the ludic group intervention suggests stability in the level of maternal anxiety during the newborn hospitalization, and can be considered a benefit for both

Changes in Atlantic Water circulation patterns and volume transports North of Svalbard over the last 12 years (2008-2020)

Atlantic Water (AW) enters the Arctic through Fram Strait as the West Spitsbergen Current (WSC). When reaching the south of Yermak Plateau, the WSC splits into the Svalbard, Yermak Pass and Yermak Branches. Downstream of Yermak Plateau, AW pathways remain unclear and uncertainties persist on how AW branches eventually merge and contribute to the boundary current along the continental slope. We took advantage of the good performance of the 1/12° Mercator Ocean model in the Western Nansen Basin (WNB) to examine the AW circulation and volume transports in the area. The model showed that the circulation changed in 2008-2020. The Yermak Branch strengthened over the northern Yermak Plateau, feeding the Return Yermak Branch along the eastern flank of the Plateau. West of Yermak Plateau, the Transpolar Drift likely shifted westward while AW recirculations progressed further north. Downstream of the Yermak Plateau, an offshore current developed above the 3800 m isobath, fed by waters from the Yermak Plateau tip. East of 18°E, enhanced mesoscale activity from the boundary current injected additional AW basin-ward, further contributing to the offshore circulation. A recurrent anticyclonic circulation in Sofia Deep developed, which also occasionally fed the western part of the offshore flow. The intensification of the circulation coincided with an overall warming in the upper WNB (0-1000 m), consistent with the progression of AW. This regional description of the changing circulation provides a background for the interpretation of upcoming observations

Effectiveness of enzymatic hydrolysis for reducing the allergenic potential of legume by-products

The interest in agri-food residues and their valorization has grown considerably, and many of them are today considered to be valuable, under-exploited sources of different compounds and notably proteins. Despite the beneficial properties of legumes by-products, there are also some emerging risks to consider, including their potential allergenicity. In this work the immunoreactivity of chickpea, pea, and white bean by-products was assessed, and whether the production of enzymatic hydrolysates can be an effective strategy to reduce this allergenic potential. The results presented clearly indicate that the efficiency of this strategy is strongly related to the enzyme used and the food matrix. All legume by-products showed immunoreactivity towards serum of legume-allergic patients. Hydrolysates from alcalase did not show residual immunoreactivity for chickpea and green pea, whereas hydrolysates from papain still presented some immunoreactivity. However, for white beans, the presence of antinutritional factors prevented a complete hydrolysis, yielding a residual immunoreactivity even after enzymatic hydrolysis with alcalase

A New and Versatile Synthesis of 1,3-Dioxan-5-yl-pyrimidine and Purine Nucleoside Analogues

Get PDF
1,3-Dioxan-5-yl pyrimidine and purine nucleoside analogues were prepared following a new and versatile synthetic strategy. These analogues were synthesized via nucleophilic addition of the selected nucleobase to a 1,3-dioxane scaffold that presents an appropriate leaving group in position 5. In particular cis and trans isomers of purine/pyrimidine nucleosides and their halogenated homologues were obtained. NMR experiments, carried out on the cis isomers, led to assignment of an equatorial orientation to the 2-hydroxymethyl group and axial orientation to the nucleobase in position 5 of the 1,3-dioxane. The trans isomers showed a diequatorial orientation of these groups. These assignments were confirmed by X-ray crystallographic studie

Get PDF
