    Selenium in storage proteins of wheat cultivated on selenium impacted soils of Punjab, India

    Wheat, an important staple cereal crop cultivated in seleniferous region of India, noted to accumulated significantly high concentrations of Se, was examined for the distribution of selenium in various protein fractions of the grains. Amongst the protein fractions, Se was dominantly (33–37%) present in the albumin fraction in Se rich grains followed by other fractions viz., globulin (20–25%), glutelin (20–25%), and prolamin (17–20%). The observations are important in context of exploring the use of this material as functional foods in formulating Se-enriched diets for Se-deficient population

    Radioiodine Therapy for Hyperthyroidism Changing Pattern of Management over Three Decades at INMAS

    Iodine - 131 therapy is a relatively simple, effective and economical method of treating hyperthyroidism. Even fifty years after the introduction of radioactive iodine, there is no concensus on the approach for selection of the dose for treatment of hyperthyroidism. Since the last three decades, the approach for radioiodine therapy at this Institute has been to treat with low, fractionated doses to produce partial destruction of the thyroid gland leaving the patient sufficient functioning gland for normal hormone production. New in vitro diagnostic techniques including free T/sub 3/, T/sub 4/ and sensitive TSH assay have been introduced over the past decade for the diagnosis of hyperthyroidism. Changes in the thyroid radioactive iodine uptake in the population due to introduction of iodized salt, and the high incidence of persistent hyperthyroidism after low dose radioiodine therapy, have prompted to go for a proporptionate increase in the /sup 131/I original dose schedules based on goitre grades. This has led to nominal increase in the incidence of post therapy hypothyroidism. However, the basic principle of low, fractionated dose therapy is still being followed at this Institute, which appears suitable for our social and economic condition

    In the present study, investigations of dielectric parameters viz dielectric constant (), dielectric loss () and AC conductivity measurements have been made for bulk chalcogenide Ge15Se85 glass in the frequency range 10 to 500 kHz within the temperature range from 300 to 390 K. The variation of dielectric constant and dielectric loss with frequency at room temperature is reported and discussed in the investigated glassy binary alloy. This may have a deep psychological impact on the patient affecting self-confidence, self-worth and ability to interact among peers. Maxillofacial Prosthodontics is a specialty that deals with rehabilitation of missing or deformed structures of orofacial region to achieve normalcy as much as practically feasible. A multidisciplinary approach is required to evaluate the psychological status, understand the impact of defect altering esthetics and mental make-up of the patient and follow an organized approach to alleviate the impact of maxillofacial defects in overall life of an individual.     Nuclear expansion with excitation

    The expansion of an isolated hot spherical nucleus with excitation energy and its caloric curve are studied in a thermodynamic model with the SkM* force as the nuclear effective two-body interaction. The calculated results are shown to compare well with the recent experimental data from energetic nuclear collisions. The fluctuations in temperature and density are also studied. They are seen to build up very rapidly beyond an excitation energy of 9 MeV/u.     Warm stellar matter with deconfinement: application to compact stars

    We investigate the properties of mixed stars formed by hadronic and quark matter in β\beta-equilibrium described by appropriate equations of state (EOS) in the framework of relativistic mean-field theory. We use the non- linear Walecka model for the hadron matter and the MIT Bag and the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models for the quark matter. The phase transition to a deconfined quark phase is investigated. In particular, we study the dependence of the onset of a mixed phase and a pure quark phase on the hyperon couplings, quark model and properties of the hadronic model. We calculate the strangeness fraction with baryonic density for the different EOS. With the NJL model the strangeness content in the mixed phase decreases. The calculations were performed for T=0 and for finite temperatures in order to describe neutron and proto-neutron stars. The star properties are discussed. Both the Bag model and the NJL model predict a mixed phase in the interior of the star. Maximum allowed masses for proto-neutron stars are larger for the NJL model (1.9\sim 1.9 M_{\bigodot}) than for the Bag model (1.6\sim 1.6 M_{\bigodot}).Comment: RevTeX,14 figures, accepted to publication in Physical Review

    Electroosmotic flow of biorheological micropolar fluids through microfluidic channels

    An analysis is presented in this work to assess the influence of micropolar nature of fluids in fully developed flow induced by electrokinetically driven peristaltic pumping through a parallel plate microchannel. The walls of the channel are assumed as sinusoidal wavy to analyze the peristaltic flow nature. We consider that the wavelength of the wall motion is much larger as compared to the channel width to validate the lubrication theory. To simplify the Poisson Boltzmann equation, we also use the Debye-Hückel linearization (i.e. wall zeta potential ≤ 25mV). We consider governing equation for micropolar fluid in absence of body force and couple effects however external electric field is employed. The solutions for axial velocity, spin velocity, flow rate, pressure rise and stream functions subjected to given physical boundary conditions are computed. The effects of pertinent parameters like Debye length and Helmholtz-Smoluchowski velocity which characterize the EDL phenomenon and external electric field, coupling number and micropolar parameter which characterize the micropolar fluid behavior, on peristaltic pumping are discussed through the illustrations. The results show that peristaltic pumping may alter by applying external electric fields. This model can be used to design and engineer the peristalsis-lab-on-chip and micro peristaltic syringe pumps for biomedical applications
