Climate change-related risks and adaptation potential in Central and South America during the 21st century

Climate-related risks in Central and South America have received increased attention and concern in science and policy, but an up-to-date comprehensive review and synthesis of risks and adaptation potential is currently missing. For this paper we evaluated over 200 peer-reviewed articles and grey literature documents published since 2012. We found that climate change in Central and South America during the 21st century may increase the risk to severe levels for the following topical risk clusters: (a) Food insecurity; (b) Floods and landslides; (c) Water scarcity; (d) Epidemics of vector-borne diseases; (e) Amazon Forest biome shift; (f). Coral bleaching; (g) Coastal risks of sea level rise, storm surges and erosion; (h) Systemic failure due to cascading impacts of hazards and epidemics. Our synthesis also identified feasible adaptation measures for each risk. The impacts of the risks will be heterogeneous throughout the region, with rural communities, Indigenous peoples, Afro-Latin Americans, women, disabled people, and migrants identified as being the most severely affected. We refer to a number of adaptation options for each risk. However, unabated climate change together with low adaptive capacity will strictly limit adaptation options. Immediate strengthening of policies for building adaptive capacity and increase of research on the risk-adaptation nexus in Central and South America are paramount. Our findings might contribute to guide the adjustment and emphasis of adaptation policies and climate risk management strategies from local to national level

Focus issue: pastoralism and rangelands in mountains

Mountain rangelands (open grasslands, mixed forest meadows, closed forests, and alpine lakes and wetlands) play vital roles for humans, supporting livestock grazing, hunting, and harvesting of plants. They thus provide livelihoods for a large number of rural mountain communities across the globe. These systems are also key for water supply to lowland areas and watershed health, carbon sequestration and storage, fire regulation, and, increasingly, recreational use and tourism. They are vital for the conservation of mountain species and habitats, including endemic species and habitats exclusive to mountains. Many of these ecosystems require management to maintain species diversity and productivity and supply a range of high-quality ecosystem services.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The objective of this study is to characterize the world scientific production on education and COVID-19 between the months of January 2020 to September 2021. A bibliometric study was carried out in five databases (Scopus, Web of Science, Google Academic, Microsoft Academic and Crossref) from which a universe of 5005 articles was extracted. The bibliometric indicators were analyzed with the help of the Publish or Perish v. 7.19 and the same analytical software of the chosen databases. Regarding the most cited article published in the analyzed databases, the one entitled "Medical Student Education in the Time of COVID-19" stands out, which received 419 citations in the Scopus database, 368 in Web of Science, 442 in Crossref, 870 in Google Scholar and 702 in Microsoft Academic. Regarding the authors with the highest scientific production on the subject, Maria Assuncao Flores stands out with 5 publications on the Web of Science and Francisco José García-Peñalvo with 5 articles indexed in the Scopus database. Regarding the journals with the highest number of articles on education and COVID-19, Sustainability stands out. These results show that the scientific production referring to education and Covid-19 confirms the radical change generated in education at all levels by the pandemic and the increase in scientific production to try to explore and describe the changing situation resulting from the pandemic in education. A Conceptual Model for Rehabilitation of Puna Grassland Social–Ecological Systems

    Get PDF
The impacts of both climate change and socioeconomic processes are driving the degradation of mountains and the ecological services they provide worldwide. In the tropical Andes, compounding glacier retreat, altered hydrological and precipitation regimes (eg off-season alternation of extreme dry and wet periods), and expansion of mining and other land uses are modifying hydrological services. Although initiatives to restore ecosystems and their services are increasing, conceptual models emerging from experiences on the ground are scarce. Based upon the experience of Peru's National Institute for Research on Glaciers and Mountain Ecosystems (INAIGEM) in the Piuray Ccorimarca microbasin (Cusco) in combining participatory action research and experiments at the plot scale, this article elaborates a conceptual model for the rehabilitation of hydrological services on the social–ecological systems of puna grassland. The model proposes multiscale (plot–pilot–microbasin) rehabilitation. At each level, the actions proposed include designing plots, selecting sites, implementing restoration activities, and evaluating and monitoring the sites. Our inductive model from the ground and plot can inform rehabilitation of hydrological services on puna grasslands elsewhere

LIFE SATISFACTION IN TIMES OF PANDEMIC: A STUDY IN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN THE CITY OF LIMA

    Get PDF
Life satisfaction is a cognitive component of well-being that arises from the subject’s evaluation of his life quality based on multiple criteria. Dealing with new problems involve making decisions that draw upon the development of skills and competencies that help students res-pond to the demands of the university stage. The objective of this study was to determine life satisfaction in times of pandemic in university students in Lima. The population consisted of 6,400 students, from which a sample of 764 subjects was drawn from five (5) universities in the city of Metropolitan Lima. The instrument applied was the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS). The psychometric analysis of the scale has an acceptable reliability, as well as excellent construct validity. Regarding the descriptive analysis of the variable, the results show that there is a medium level of life satisfaction, and this is a rather worrying result when considering that the respondents are young people who should have a higher or high level of satisfaction. It is suggested to prioritize greater attention to this problem, as well as to develop research on this variable with other groups equally vulnerable as the university sector.Revisón por pare

    Central and South America

The chapter is divided into two main sections. The first section follows an integrative approach in which hazards, exposure, vulnerability, impacts and risks are discussed following the eight climatically homogeneous sub-regions described in WGI AR6 (Figure 12.1). The second section assesses the implemented and proposed adaptation practices by sector; in doing so, it connects to the WGII AR6 crosschapter themes. The storyline is then a description of the hazards, exposure, vulnerability and impacts providing as much detail as is available in the literature at the sub-regional level, followed by the identification of risks as a result of the interaction of those aspects. This integrated sub-regional approach ensures a balance in the text, particularly for countries that are usually underrepresented in the literature but that show a high level of vulnerability and impacts, such as those observed in CA. The sectoral assessment of adaptation that follows is useful for policymakers and implementers, usually focused and organised by sectors, government ministries or secretaries that can easily locate the relevant adaptation information for their particular sector. To ensure coherence in the chapter, a summary of the assessed adaptation options by key risks is presented, followed by a feasibility assessment for some relevant adaptation options. The chapter closes with case studies and a discussion of the knowledge gaps evidenced in the process of the assessment.EEA Santa CruzFil: Castellanos, Edwin J.
