Professor Introduction: The Multiple Genre Argument Research in Progress for ENGL 1301: Composition I Faculty Mentor: W. Scott Cheney, Ph.D. The following papers represent research work begun by students in English 1301, the first course in the two-semester composition sequence at Collin College. Students in 1301 are introduced to the concept of academic research by learning to ask research focused questions and then use the library resources to find sources that provide answers. In what follows, students have written creative research-based essays called Multiple Genre Arguments. When we experience controversial issues in our everyday lives, no one hands us a ten-page research paper that outlines the issues and tells us what to do. Instead, we have to wade through the controversy and the corresponding piles of paper to figure out what the issues really are and how we should best respond to them. In a Multiple Genre Argument (MGA), the author creates this context—the collection of material that constitutes the paper trail surrounding a specific issue. During this process, the author becomes familiar with all sides of the issue and ultimately has to choose the most convincing side of the argument. Though an MGA includes some traditional academic forms, the point of the project is to create a tangible context surrounding a specific controversy. In their book Multiple Genres, Multiple Voices, Cheryl Johnson and Jayne Moneysmith explain in more detail what an MGA looks like: In a [Multiple Genre Argument], writers create an argument that explores alternative perspectives by using multiple genres written from different points of view. Genres might include a letter, a dialogue, a report, or even a poem—in addition to the traditional essay. Students bolster their argument with research that is reflected within these genres, creating an “organic” whole, though the “whole” may not be linear. By combining an array of voices, with the rigor of scholarship, the [Multiple Genre Argument] offers a fresh and powerful approach to research and argument. Their idea of “combining an array of voices, with the rigor of scholarship” sums up the purpose of the MGA. To say it another way, the project presents the ideas of all sides of the issue and adds scholarly research to make one side of the argument the most convincing

Schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder affecting about 1% of the world's population and manifests itself as positive symptoms (eg. hallucinations), negative symptoms (eg. social withdrawal) in conjunction with cognitive impairments (eg. working memory). Evidence suggests that schizophrenia is, in part, a heritable disease. Candidate susceptibility genes implicate the glutamatergic neurotransmitter system, reinforcing clinical observations of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) hypofunction in schizophrenia. One of those genes, D-amino acid oxidase (DAO), is genetically associated with schizophrenia and its function includes degradation of D-serine, the NMDAR co-agonist. DAO is a candidate gene of high interest due to schizophrenic patients' manifestation of reduced D-serine levels, increased DAO expression and increased DAO activity. Despite mounting evidence for DAO involvement in schizophrenia, its regulation is poorly understood. Characterization of DAO may lead to a more thorough understanding of its function and biology and ultimately to the identification of novel targets for this disorder. To this end, DAO-specific antibodies were utilized to identify DAO-interacting proteins through co-immunoprecipitation from rat cerebellum, where DAO expression is especially high. Subsequent mass spectroscopy analysis of associating proteins yielded twenty-four putative DAO interactors. The most abundant and interesting interactors include known presynaptic active zone members such as bassoon (BSN) and piccolo (PCLO). The DAO interaction with BSN was confirmed through co-immunoprecipitation and both proteins were shown to localize in the presynaptic junction. These data suggest that BSN is a novel DAO interactor and defines a previously unappreciated localization of DAO perhaps as a result of a physiologically important interaction with BSN. Furthermore, BSN was found to partially inhibit DAO enzymatic activity in transiently transfected human embryonic kidney (Hek293) cells. Collectively these novel findings suggest that synaptic D-serine concentration may be under tight regulation by BSN via proximally localized DAO. DAO may thus play a role in modulating the functions of the presynaptic active zone via its interaction with BSN

The cost of hosting a ferry port : assessing Baltic ferry ports’ negative impact on urban areas and their strategies to mitigate it

    Get PDF
Purpose: The purpose of the article is to assess the negative impact of the leading Baltic ferry ports on the urban areas where ferry services are provided, as well as the strategies adopted to mitigate this impact. Design/Methodology/Approach: Several research methods were applied: literature review, data exploration method, desk research and comparative analysis. As this is a pilot study, the comparison is limited to: (a) the ferry ports with the largest turnover of wheeled cargo units; (b) selected criteria i.e., location, access infrastructure, investments in modern eco-friendly solutions. Findings: (1) almost all leading ferry ports within the BSR have developed solutions aimed at reducing the negative impact of their cargo operations on the port city and environment; (2) some ferry ports have actively responded to the IMO's call to cooperate with shipowners subsumed in Resolution MEPC.323(74). Practical Implications: This study allows to highlight the best practices to minimize the negative impact of ferry ports on urban areas, as well as indicate examples of effective cooperation with ferry operators in the BSR, which can be a model for other ferry ports. Originality/Value: So far, no research has been conducted on the activities undertaken by the ferry terminals to eliminate the externalities of their activities, which causes a research gap in this area.peer-reviewe

Presence of endometrial adenocarcinoma in situ in complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia is associated with increased incidence of endometrial carcinoma in subsequent hysterectomy.

The distinction of complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia from endometrial adenocarcinoma is often problematic. Foci of back-to-back arrangement of glands or foci of cribriform arrangement of glands smaller than 2.1 mm in diameter are considered insufficient for the diagnosis of endometrial adenocarcinoma by some authors, and sufficient to be diagnosed as endometrial adenocarcinoma by other authors. We refer to these foci as endometrial adenocarcinoma in situ. In this study, we evaluated findings in subsequent hysterectomy in complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia patients with and without adenocarcinoma in situ. Follow-up findings, including the presence or absence of endometrial adenocarcinoma in the hysterectomy specimen, the grade of the carcinoma and the depth of myometrial invasion were analyzed. Of the total 87 patients with complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia, 33 patients had adenocarcinoma in situ and 54 lacked adenocarcinoma in situ. Of 33 patients 22 (66%) with adenocarcinoma in situ had endometrial adenocarcinoma on subsequent hysterectomy vs 13 of 54 (24%) patients without adenocarcinoma in situ (P=0.0001). Myoinvasive endometrial adenocarcinoma was present in 20 of 33 (61%) patients with adenocarcinoma in situ vs 8 of the 54 (15%) patients without adenocarcinoma in situ (P\u3c or =0.0001). The depth of myometrial invasion in cases with myoinvasion was 24.5+19.4% in patients with adenocarcinoma in situ and 12.8+8.5% in patients without adenocarcinoma in situ (P=0.05). Among patients younger than age of 50, 5 of the 7 (71%) with adenocarcinoma in situ had myoinvasive carcinoma vs 2 of the 13 (15%) without adenocarcinoma in situ (P=0.02). The likelihood of finding endometrial adenocarcinoma in subsequent hysterectomy in patients with complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia is significantly increased if adenocarcinoma in situ is present in prior endometrial sampling. Endometrial adenocarcinomas in patients with adenocarcinoma in situ are far more frequently myoinvasive, and invade to a greater depth than endometrial adenocarcinomas seen in patients without adenocarcinoma in situ. Use of adenocarcinoma in situ terminology could lead to improved management of patients with complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia
