Hydroxy functional acrylates were prepared via transacylation of methyl acrylate with 1,2,6-hexanetriol catalyzed by Candida antarctica lipase B. Under the applied reaction conditions, 70% of the substrate was converted into hydroxy functional acrylates. In a subsequent step, after filtration of the enzyme, the monomer mixture containing methyl acrylate and the new monomers was polymerized via free radical polymerization resulting in a functional copolymer with M-n = 14500 g/mol

On the Implementation of a Content-Addressable Network
Abstract-Over the last years, the Internet has evolved towards becoming the dominant platform for deployment of new services and applications such as real time and multimedia services, application-level multicast communication and large-scale data sharing. A consequence of this evolution is that features like robust routing, efficient search, scalability, decentralization, fault tolerance, trust and authentication have become of paramount importance. We consider in our paper the specific case of structured peer-to-peer (P2P) overlay networks with a particular focus on Content-Addressable Networks (CANs). An investigation of the existing approaches for structured P2P overlay networks is provided, where we point out their advantages and drawbacks. The essentials of CAN architecture are presented and based on that, we report on the implementation of a CAN simulator. Our initial goal is to use the simulator for investigating the performance of the CAN with focus on the routing algorithm. Preliminary results obtained in our experiments are reported as well

Snail survival as bioindicator of cadmium contaminated soils under semi-realistic field conditions
Juvenile brown garden snails (Helix aspersa MΓΌller) were exposed to Cd-contaminated soils for 60 days
under semi-realistic field conditions. The soils were contaminated with increasing concentrations of cadmium
chloride (0β2900 mg kg-1 Cd2+/solution CdCl2). The snails were housed in terrariums and were fed
exclusively with nettle leaves. The experiments were carried out in Timisoara on 1000 snails. The survival
rates differed significantly for different Cd treatments. Only higher cadmium concentrations (> 1000 mg kg-1
Cd2+/solution CdCl2) had a significant influence on survival curves of snails exposed to Cd-contaminated
soils. The maximal death rate reached 81.00Β±9.9% for snails exposed to soils contaminated with 2900 mg kg1
Cd /solution CdCl2. We found dose-dependent survival rates, whereas the half maximal effective
concentration was 1365 mg kg-1 Cd2+/solution CdCl2. Our results suggested that longer-term studies are
required for assessing the real potential of snail survival rate as bioindicator of Cd-contaminated soils in field conditions
The relationship between ACL reconstruction and meniscal repair: quality of life, sports return, and meniscal failure rate 2- to 12-year follow-up.
Background: Few studies have approached in a long-term follow-up of meniscal repair at an amateur level, specially studying variables as a quality of life and failure rate. The purpose of this review is to study medium to long-term clinical results in patients at amateur sports patients, that have required meniscal sutures at our center, with or without ACL reconstruction. We evaluate the objective function of the knee, as well as patients' return to sports activities, quality of life, and the rate of failed repair and study of the possible reasons. Methods: This was an observational retrospective study. Ninety-two patients who regularly perform amateur sports activities (Tegner 4 to 7) were assessed, with a minimum follow-up period of 2 years, divided into 2 groups: group 1, isolated meniscal suture (43 cases) and group 2, associated to ACL reconstruction (49 cases). Each patient made this test in 2019: Lysholm and Tegner (validated for Spanish) before a knee injury and after surgery, motivation to return to sports activity (Likert scale with 3 items: low, regular, or high), and quality of life through SD-12 test. Results: High return to amateur sports rate (92%) was even higher in the isolated meniscal repair group in comparison to the group with associated ACL. We have not found statistically significant differences between sports return and age, gender, injured meniscus, chondral injuries, preoperative Tegner score, or motivation. No significant differences in physical or mental health fields between both groups. Meniscal repair failed in 12 patients (13%). Higher rate of failure in isolated bucket-handle tear injuries (p < 0.0062). No statistically significant association was found between the other variables studied. Conclusions: Good results with 92% of sports return, low rate of complications, and low retear rate, even lower when is associated with ACL reconstruction and in external meniscus repair, and high values at SF-12 between 2 groups
Better Outcomes in Severe and Morbid Obese Patients (BMI > 35βkg/m2) in Primary Endo-Model Rotating-Hinge Total Knee Arthroplasty
The Endo-Model rotating-hinge prosthesis is preferably indicated as a primary implant in patients with advanced axial deviation of the lower limbs or unstable knees with severe bone defects. Outcomes were studied in 111 knees, operated in a three-year period; the mean followup was 28 months. Joint balance enhancement and limbs mechanical axis correction were achieved after surgery. There were 6 deep infections and 16 patients referred postoperative anterior knee pain. WOMAC index scores disaggregated by gender and BMI showed better outcomes in obese patients (specifically, those with a BMI of 35β40βkg/m2) and in men. Although the lack of a control group did not allow definite conclusions and despite a nonnegligible complication rate, our results reveal that the Endo-Model total knee arthroplasty can be a useful tool to deal with severe and morbid obese patients affected of severe gonarthrosis associated with marked axial deviations, ligament instability, or bone defects
High-level dietary cadmium exposure is associated with global DNA hypermethylation in the gastropod hepatopancreas
5-methylcytosine (5mC) is a key epigenetic mark which influences gene expression and phenotype. In vertebrates, this epigenetic mark is sensitive to Cd exposure, but there is no information linking such an event with changes in global 5mC levels in terrestrial gastropods despite their importance as excellent ecotoxicological bioindicators of metal contamination. Therefore, we first evaluated total 5mC content in DNA of the hepatopancreas of adult Cantareus aspersus with the aim to determine whether this epigenetic mark is responsive to Cd exposure. The experiment was conducted under laboratory conditions and involved a continuous exposure, multiple dose- and time-point (14, 28, and 56 days) study design. Hepatopancreas cadmium levels were measured using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry and the percentage of 5-mC in samples using an ELISA-based colorimetric assay. Snail death rates were also assessed. Our results, for the first time, reveal the presence of 5mC in C. aspersus and provide evidence for Cd-induced changes in global 5mC levels in DNA of gastropods and mollusks. Although less sensitive than tissue accumulation, DNA methylation levels responded in a dose- and time-dependent manner to dietary cadmium, with exposure dose having a much stronger effect than exposure duration. An obvious trend of increasing 5mC levels was observed starting at 28 days of exposure to the second highest dose and this trend persisted at the two highest treatments for close to one month, when the experiment was terminated after 56 days. Moreover, a strong association was identified between Cd concentrations in the hepatopancreas and DNA methylation levels in this organ. These data indicate an overall trend towards DNA hypermethylation with elevated Cd exposure. No consistent lethal effect was observed, irrespective of time point and Cd-dosage. Overall, our findings suggest that the total 5mC content in DNA of the hepatopancreas of land snails is responsive to sublethal Cd exposure and give new insights into invertebrate environmental epigenetics
