The Atles Lingüístic del Domini Català, which first volume appeared in 2001, directed by J. Veny and L. Pons Riera, supposes a new and very important advance in the field of Spanish linguistic geography. We want to offer a detailed analysis about the methodology used in the preparation of this atlas, as well as a critical description of its formal characteristics and linguistic content, with special attention to the dialectal variation. Also, we offer a brief analysis of the Petit Atles Lingüístic del Domini Català, directed by J. Veny and published in 2008, aimed at a more general public

Labour repression and social justice in Franco’s Spain: the political objectives of compulsory sickness insurance, 1942-1957

[Abstract:]This article analyzes the basic characteristics of the labor and social policies of the Franco dictatorship established in Spain after the Civil War (1936-1939), and the links which existed between them. The offer of support to working families was presented through a paternalistic discourse of ‘social justice’ which was combined with tough repressive measures in the labor market. Within this context, compulsory social insurances pursued a political end, as they served to mitigate social tensions in a context of worker repression and harsh living conditions. Sickness insurance was a key element in this strategy, and it turned out to be very economical for the dictatorship, as the burden of financing the system was placed on employers and, above all, the workers themselves. This led to financial and management problems within a system providing imperfect coverage, with low benefits and serious inequalities in protection. Consequently, Spain moved away from other advanced countries which, at this time, were establishing their welfare states on the basis of two pillars: the universalization of benefits and the redistributive character of the system from a social point of view

Observables, gauge invariance, and the role of the observers in the limit from general relativity to special relativity

    Get PDF
Some conceptual issues concerning general invariant theories, with special emphasis on general relativity, are analyzed. The common assertion that observables must be required to be gauge invariant is examined in the light of the role played by a system of observers. Some features of the reduction of the gauge group are discussed, including the fact that in the process of a partial gauge fixing the reduction at the level of the gauge group and the reduction at the level of the variational principle do not commute. Distinctions between the mathematical and the physical concept of gauge symmetry are discussed and illustrated with examples. The limit from general relativity to special relativity is considered as an example of a gauge group reduction that is allowed in some specific physical circumstances. Whether and when the Poincar\'e group must be considered as a residual gauge group will come out as a result of our analysis, that applies, in particular, to asymptotically flat spaces.Comment: 17 page

Introduction to the JOCN special issue on future PON architectures enabled by advanced technology

    Get PDF
This JOCN Special Issue, which spans the September and October 2020 issues, investigates the future of passive optical networks (PONs) in light of new enabling technologies that are currently under consideration. The papers present a broad overview of topics of current interest, across both the physical and network layers. They investigate how new technologies (e.g., higher-speed direct detection transceivers, coherent systems, advanced digital signal processing, and new optoelectronic components) and new network-layer approaches may drive the medium- to long-term evolution of PONs
