Einstein-Maxwell-scalar black holes: the hot, the cold and the bald
The phenomenon of spontaneous scalarisation of charged black holes (BHs) has
recently motivated studies of various Einstein-Maxwell-scalar models. Within
these models, different classes of BH solutions are possible, depending on the
non-minimal coupling function , between the scalar field and the
Maxwell invariant. Here we consider the class wherein both the (bald)
electrovacuum Reissner-Nordstr\"om (RN) BH and new scalarised BHs co-exist, and
the former are never unstable against scalar perturbations. In particular we
examine the model, within this subclass, with a quartic coupling function:
. The domain of existence of the scalarised BHs,
for fixed , is composed of two branches. The first branch (cold
scalarised BHs) is continuously connected to the extremal RN BH. The second
branch (hot scalarised BHs) connects to the first one at the minimum value of
the charge to mass ratio and it includes overcharged BHs. We then assess the
perturbative stability of the scalarised solutions, focusing on spherical
perturbations. On the one hand, cold scalarised BHs are shown to be unstable by
explicitly computing growing modes. The instability is quenched at both
endpoints of the first branch. On the other hand, hot scalarised BHs are shown
to be stable by using the S-deformation method. Thus, in the spherical sector
this model possesses two stable BH local ground states (RN and hot scalarised).
We point out that the branch structure of BHs in this model parallels the one
of BHs in five dimensional vacuum gravity, with [Myer-Perry BHs, fat rings,
thin rings] playing the role of [RN, cold scalarised, hot scalarised] BHs.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
Intermingling of Chromosome Territories in Interphase Suggests Role in Translocations and Transcription-Dependent Associations
After mitosis, mammalian chromosomes partially decondense to occupy distinct territories in the cell nucleus. Current models propose that territories are separated by an interchromatin domain, rich in soluble nuclear machinery, where only rare interchromosomal interactions can occur via extended chromatin loops. In contrast, recent evidence for chromatin mobility and high frequency of chromosome translocations are consistent with significant levels of chromosome intermingling, with important consequences for genome function and stability. Here we use a novel high-resolution in situ hybridization procedure that preserves chromatin nanostructure to show that chromosome territories intermingle significantly in the nucleus of human cells. The degree of intermingling between specific chromosome pairs in human lymphocytes correlates with the frequency of chromosome translocations in the same cell type, implying that double-strand breaks formed within areas of intermingling are more likely to participate in interchromosomal rearrangements. The presence of transcription factories in regions of intermingling and the effect of transcription impairment on the interactions between chromosomes shows that transcription-dependent interchromosomal associations shape chromosome organization in mammalian cells. These findings suggest that local chromatin conformation and gene transcription influence the extent with which chromosomes interact and affect their overall properties, with direct consequences for cell-type specific genome stability
A study on wear evaluation of railway wheels based on multibody dynamics and wear computation
The wear evolution of railway wheels is a very important issue in railway engineering. In the past, the reprofiling intervals of railway vehicle steel wheels have been scheduled according to designers' experience. Today, more reliable and accurate tools in predicting wheel wear evolution and wheelset lifetime can be used in order to achieve economical and safety benefits. In this work, a computational tool that is able to predict the evolution of the wheel profiles for a given railway system, as a function of the distance run, is presented. The strategy adopted consists of using a commercial multibody software to study the railway dynamic problem and a purpose-built code for managing its pre- and post-processing data in order to compute the wear. The tool is applied here to realistic operation scenarios in order to assess the effect of some service conditions on the wheel wear progression

A direct method for analyzing the nonlinear vehicle–structure interaction
This article presents an accurate, efficient and stable algorithm to analyze the nonlinear vertical
vehicle-structure interaction. The governing equilibrium equations of the vehicle and structure are
complemented with additional constraint equations that relate the displacements of the vehicle with the
corresponding displacements of the structure. These equations form a single system, with displacements
and contact forces as unknowns, that is solved using an optimized block factorization algorithm. Due to
the nonlinear nature of contact, an incremental formulation based on the Newton method is adopted. The
vehicles, track and structure are modeled using finite elements to take into account all the significant
deformations. The numerical example presented clearly demonstrates the accuracy and computational
efficiency of the proposed method
Macroalgal turfs in the Azores
Copyright © 2009 Blackwell Verlag GmbH.Studies on macroalgal communities of the Azores report algal turfs as one of the most conspicuous ecological entities occurring on the rocky shores of these islands. The present study investigates the influence of shore height and substratum on turf composition. Data were analysed using the software PRIMER and results confirmed the previous distinction between calcareous, dominated by articulated coralline algae, and non-calcareous turfs, characterized mainly by small red algae. However, no differences in species composition were found in either type of turf occurring on different substrata or at different shore levels
Hyperthermia induced by gold nanoparticles and visible light photothermy combined with chemotherapy to tackle doxorubicin sensitive and resistant colorectal tumor 3D spheroids
UIDB/04378/2020 SFRH/BPD/124612/2016Current cancer therapies are frequently ineffective and associated with severe side effects and with acquired cancer drug resistance. The development of effective therapies has been hampered by poor correlations between pre-clinical and clinical outcomes. Cancer cell-derived spheroids are three-dimensional (3D) structures that mimic layers of tumors in terms of oxygen and nutrient and drug resistance gradients. Gold nanoparticles (AuNP) are promising therapeutic agents which permit diminishing the emergence of secondary effects and increase therapeutic efficacy. In this work, 3D spheroids of Doxorubicin (Dox)-sensitive and -resistant colorectal carcinoma cell lines (HCT116 and HCT116-DoxR, respectively) were used to infer the potential of the combination of chemotherapy and Au-nanoparticle photothermy in the visible (green laser of 532 nm) to tackle drug resistance in cancer cells. Cell viability analysis of 3D tumor spheroids suggested that AuNPs induce cell death in the deeper layers of spheroids, further potentiated by laser irradiation. The penetration of Dox and earlier spheroid disaggregation is potentiated in combinatorial therapy with Dox, AuNP functionalized with polyethylene glycol (AuNP@PEG) and irradiation. The time point of Dox administration and irradiation showed to be important for spheroids destabilization. In HCT116-sensitive spheroids, pre-irradiation induced earlier disintegration of the 3D structure, while in HCT116 Dox-resistant spheroids, the loss of spheroid stability occurred almost instantly in post-irradiated spheroids, even with lower Dox concentrations. These results point towards the application of new strategies for cancer therapeutics, reducing side effects and resistance acquisition.publishersversionpublishe
Correlates of children's physical activity during the COVID-19 confinement in Portugal
Objectives: The aim of the study was to understand the role of household variables on the percentage of
physical activity (%PA) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) confinement in Portugal.
Study design: A cross-sectional study design using an anonymous online survey was launched to assess
how Portuguese families with children aged younger than 13 years adjusted their daily routines to the confinement.
Methods: Separate analyses of variance were performed to investigate how factors such as the number of
children, age, sex, the housing characteristics, and the adults' job situation can affect the percentage of
time for PA (%PA).
Results: Findings, based on data from 2159 children, indicate that (1) boys and girls did not differ in the
%PA on any of the age-groups; (2) children with an outdoor space and who had other children in the
household were significantly more active (P < .001); (3) children from families with all adults working
from home showed lower levels of %PA; and (4) being younger, having a big outdoor space, having
other children in the household, and having at least one adult free from working from home were
significant positive predictors of children's %PA, explaining 21% of the overall variance.
Conclusion: Time allocated for PA during this period is reduced compared with what is usually reported
on normal days. It is necessary to find strategies to increase children's PA, especially in families in which
both parents are working and have no outdoor space.4811-99FE-2ECD | Luis Paulo RodriguesN/
