Pre-feasibility study of a biogas plant for peyrelevade community

    Get PDF
This work presents a technical and financial pre-feasibility assessment for heat generation from biogas for a retirement home in the community of Peyrelevade, France. The heat demand of the retirement home currently relies on fuel oil boiler and electric heaters. The biogas is to be produced mainly from grass silage. As result of the feedstock abundance in the community, electricity can be also generated in an 80kWe CHP unit operating in full power capacity. The electricity produced can be then sold to the national electricity utility in France. The financial analysis was carried out using RETScreenTM. An efficiency of 62.9% is achievable in this CHP (Combined heat and power) biogas plant, with a total life cycle saving/income of 0.05€ for each MJ of heat supplied to the retirement home. A company set-up has also been proposed for the development of a community based compan

The Gas Sensing Properties of Porphyrins-coated Laterally Grown ZnO Nanorods

AbstractPorphyrins coated ZnO is an interesting material where the exposure to light and gas may cooperate to modulate the respective sensitivities. In this work, the gas sensing properties of porphyrins functionalized laterally grown ZnO nanorods are introduced. The porphyrin layer incompletely coats the semiconductor surface in order to keep both ZnO and porphyrins in contact with analyte. It is known that UV light may prompt the chemical sensitivity of ZnO replacing the high temperature condition. Here we demonstrate that because of the photo-injection of electrons from porphyrin to the ZnO, the same impact could be acquired with visible light

Heralded quantum entanglement between two crystals

Quantum networks require the crucial ability to entangle quantum nodes. A prominent example is the quantum repeater which allows overcoming the distance barrier of direct transmission of single photons, provided remote quantum memories can be entangled in a heralded fashion. Here we report the observation of heralded entanglement between two ensembles of rare-earth-ions doped into separate crystals. A heralded single photon is sent through a 50/50 beamsplitter, creating a single-photon entangled state delocalized between two spatial modes. The quantum state of each mode is subsequently mapped onto a crystal, leading to an entangled state consisting of a single collective excitation delocalized between two crystals. This entanglement is revealed by mapping it back to optical modes and by estimating the concurrence of the retrieved light state. Our results highlight the potential of rare-earth-ions doped crystals for entangled quantum nodes and bring quantum networks based on solid-state resources one step closer.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

Speckle interferometry applied to pharmacodynamic studies: evaluation of parasite motility

    Get PDF
The work reported here describes the application of the optical technique known as dynamic speckle interferometry to evaluate the motility of nematode parasites exposed to different anthelmintic drugs. This technique, a well proven tool for assessing the time evolution of different phenomena, is here successfully used to quantify parasite motility in pharmacodynamic assays. The characterization of the pharmacological properties of anthelmintic drugs is critical to optimize their use in parasite control. Besides, the evaluation of nematode motility is a relevant indicator of the pharmacodynamic effect of anthelmintic drugs. The application of this approach to study the motility of Haemonchus contortus (used as a model of nematode parasites) larvae exposed to different drugs is presented, showing its usefulness.Facultad de IngenieríaCentro de Investigaciones Óptica

Testing foundations of quantum mechanics with photons

The foundational ideas of quantum mechanics continue to give rise to counterintuitive theories and physical effects that are in conflict with a classical description of Nature. Experiments with light at the single photon level have historically been at the forefront of tests of fundamental quantum theory and new developments in photonics engineering continue to enable new experiments. Here we review recent photonic experiments to test two foundational themes in quantum mechanics: wave-particle duality, central to recent complementarity and delayed-choice experiments; and Bell nonlocality where recent theoretical and technological advances have allowed all controversial loopholes to be separately addressed in different photonics experiments.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, published as a Nature Physics Insight review articl

biodiversity of hypogeous fungi in basilicata

    Get PDF
During the last two decades, systematic studies were carried out on biodiversity of hypogeous fungi in forestry territories of the two Basilicata (southern Italy) provinces, Matera and Potenza. Identification of fungus taxa found in the region was commonly accomplished on the basis of macro- and microscopic features, and only in a few instances, molecular analyses were utilized. Thanks to these investigations, Basilicata now occupies, among Italian regions, the first and fourth positions for number of Tuber species, varieties or forms and total number of hypogeous fungi (Ascomycota, Basidiomycota and Zygomycota) naturally growing in its woodlands and Mediterranean maquis areas. In fact, the last up-to-date acquirements on the topic bring up to 29 and 53 the number of Tuber taxa and that of the other hypogeous and semi-hypogeous (only three entities) fungi present in the region, respectively. In this chapter, the essential information regarding these fungi is given, so updating to 2014 the relative available knowledge. Among the Fungi, object of this review, the Ascomycota Pachyphloeus conglomeratus and Tuber malenconii, the Basidiomycota Hymenogaster decorus, H. hessey, H. rehsteineri, Schenella pityophilus and Myriostoma coliforme as well as the Zygomycota Youngiomyces multiplex deserve a particular mention because of their rarity
